Use this method to land more COHO AND CHINOOK Salmon (Soft Beads)

  • Over the years, soft beads has been one of the most favourite way to fish for salmon for many anglers. For first 3 years of me being on the Vedder river, I have been putting my bead 2-3 inches above the hook also known as pegging. Over those times I have noticed and heard complaints about poor landing ratio due to the trailing hook compare to using roe. After discovering that you could also put the bead directly on the hook, there was no going back. I have landed more fish and very very few beads were lost in the process. I mean 9 out of 10 times I get the bead back. The hook placement is always top lip or top jaw which is the best place to hook a fish.

    Rod Toth has been promoting this for a while. I started doing it and I've noticed my landing rate has gone up, at the expense of losing a few beads here and there. A worthwhile trade.

    I can confirm, this method helped me land more fish this season, however there are 2 cons to it. In low and clear water conditions its better to keep the bead pegged so the hook isn't seen, and second the bead comes off the hook pretty easily, I burned through a bead for every 1-2 fish.

  • @whitesalmon0925
    @whitesalmon0925 Před 11 měsíci +1

    In my experience, it's a trade off, I got less bites with this method, but it does provide much better landing ratio. pegging above the hook resulted in more bites, but without a proper hookset, It leads to worse landing ratio.

    Theres pros and cons to both methods, and trade offs. Pegged beads will hardily ever come off, and your hookup ratio is somewhere between 75-80% in my personal experience. Hard beads will pretty much last as long as you donf lose em. You definitely have a higher hookup ratio with soft beads, somewhere in the 90%, but the trade off is that you lose far more plastic beads, on top of not being as stealthy. Sometimes, setting the hook with soft beads will cause it to come off. Also, sometimes i feel like the fish will notice your hook on the bead and avoid it when compared to pegged. Soft beads are also more versatile and convenient to use.
    After a long time of using both, i usually stick with pegged hard beads, it lasts longer and saves me more money in the long run. I have a pretty good idea of what im doing, so losing one in four fish honestly doesnt affect me, nor would i ever need to constantly switch my beads, since im pretty sure i know which bead to use.
