Haven't played D2 in quite some years, but I recall that both Manald and Nagel have a rarity of 15 and SoJ has a rarity of 1, so each unique ring from NM Andy should have a 1/31 chance of being a SoJ. You're right on the curve, not above, not below :P Quite a nice experiment!

im a new player and ive been consistently dreaming about dropping a Ber/Jah rune for the last week. A couple of times, I would jump up from my bed and check my characters inventory and be sad that it wasn't there LMFAO

Excellent demonstration of the power of a larger samplesize. Stone of jordan would appear on 1 : 31 rings dropped from andariel nightmare, something that would result in 3 : 93, of wich you got. And the same for 30% nagelrings. they are 15 : 31 turns out to be a nagel, so out of 100 it would be around 47 nagelrings, and 1 : 16 of those will be 30, wich is 3 : 48, wich is also what you ended up with. You hit the exact average in this demonstration, not lucky, not unlucky. Nice video
Good demonstration on how rare it is even from nightmare Andariel. Some people talk about farming her with the tone of "just go and get it, man" but it can really take a while.
Well. Assuming he put the oldest rings from the start of the project on top and then went down, he had an soj in the first 20 rings. Thats a couple hundred runs maybe, and a good fire sorc with a decent map can pump that out pretty quick.

Maybe it is the technical fastest way to specifically get sojs and only sojs but this is a good case scenario, bad case it will be your 50th unique ring after a thousand runs and you will have nothing else to show for it. Only a sadist would do this.

I remembered the good old days of D2 on Bnet, where nagel > manald > SoJ spawns in order. So we would farm characters full of gold and buy rings off the merchant on a mule while carrying nagel + manald. Next unique ring that spawns off the merchant would be a guaranteed SoJ. :)

I have never made that much of runs, but back then I had a necro, who easily got 2 soj (one from Andy and another one from a cow level). I doubt I made 100 runs in both directions. Now I am playing resurrected and finally understand HOW lucky I were.
I just got an SOJ from cows in ressurected, i never had one before although i farmed Andariel like no tommorow... for 10 plus years.

I played Classic D2 ladder on closed BNet for a number of years, farmed Andy and Meph mercilessly, ID'd dozens of 30 MF Nagels, and I don't think I dropped more than 1 SOJ from her in all that time. In all those thousands of hours of play the only SOJs I ever got were, one from Hell or NM cows, and all others were just traded for. Imo this project was a bit duplicitous, 3/100 would've been a dream drop-rate in my experience, nevermind that you only got 3 perfect Nagels with it. I should've had dozens of SOJs at that rate!
There was a bit of myth in the classic community about how best to farm SOJs, the most prevalent one being to MF NM Andy with 250-350 MF and you were "guaranteed" one every 50-100 runs, but I think both of our experiences thoroughly dispute that, and mine even more heavily than yours. Grats on your SOJs though, I'm still waiting to find ONE in PlugY single-player. Rough times out here in Diablo 2 land
Rng is rng. You can't expect the odds to act the same every time. Even 2205 runs is a very small sample in the grand scheme of things. Millions of samples would have to be collected to produce accurate results.
@@finalcam1740 Oh of course, that's why I feel like it was almost unfairly disproportionate. 3:3 is a really weird ratio of IDs for SOJs to PNagels and definitely exemplifies the nature of sample size. I feel like I'd ID'd hundreds of unique rings on a monthly basis and it was always so disheartening. PNagel eventually became Charsifood, I was tired of muling them I got that many. But those damn SOJs... it just made me wonder where everybody who I was trading with was getting theirs, or if I was somehow cosmically influenced to experience everyone else's bad RNG while they were getting paydays.
As an aside, I also found no more than a half dozen Silks, Gulls, or Goldskins (those few items being somewhat commodified in classic ladder, not immensely so but enough to still give them value in bartering) in all my years and also only acquired through trading. I really felt like my odds were cursed, and on Closed BNet it was especially a thorn in your side because you could only make about 20 games/hr before Realm Down which really make it sting all the more bitterly: you MF as much as you can, as much as you're ALLOWED, but even meeting the quota is never enough!
I've been playing D2 since long before CZcams existed, and I have ever found 1 - one - SOJ.
Been playing since classic 1.03, have only found 5 in that time. There are some items I've never seen drop such as Tyraels, Mangs Song Lesson, Cranium Basher and Asterons.

I'm a little bit late to the party, but i look at it from the standpoint of trading. Even if i find less SoJ in Hell Andarial, i still find overall more expensive stuff that i can trade for an SoJ. That's why i never farm anything at Nightmare.
Yep, you always want to farm the hardest content you can handle without it slowing you down.
NM mephisto is pretty good early on at the start of ladder when you are trying to gear up to farm hell. He can drop all the good lvl 42 items like hoz, titans, occy, war travs etc. Most of which are quite valuable early on.
But I agree, once you are geared up and can handle farming hell there's no reason to farm anything in nm.

Sure... SoJ's have less odds in Hell difficulty, but it also feels really nice to find that 5% LL BK ring too that Hell tends to offer. I seem to find them just as often as SoJ's. I always told people to only farm Nightmare if their character struggles to farm Hell, or you feel your clear speed isn't fast enough yet to justify the difficulty increase.
I have found one Stone of Jordan. Still one of the best feelings I've had in my life. The very rare and valuable drops in this game are so amazing you remember them for years.

@@Clear706 how do you know it's every few months? d2 ladder is once every 6 months i'm pretty sure. And trading makes great builds not very hard to make, unless you go for like perfect items or something.

Diablo 4: Given a Soj in first 5 minutes of the beta.

Judging by what I’ve seen in beta it looks like hot garbage imo. Now I know why so many people thought a D2 remaster was coming bc they blatantly released a copy pasted beta version of D2 with the itemization of D3 with upgraded graphics. If the loot/Itemization doesn’t receive a massive overhaul I for one will be sticking with Diablo 2 for another foreseeable 7-10 years.
After spending endless hours doing LK runs, sometimes enduring 1000+ run dry spells... NM Andy is a pleasure to run. I started playing when SOJs were still currency on BNET so they always have this special place in my heart. I don't mind spending an afternoon targeting them in NM. Your sorc is invincible in NM, the runs can be close to 15 seconds each with the right map, so youre virtually guaranteed one or two a day if you don't mind the monotony.
Honestly these vids make me scared to go back to D2
D2 is from a different time. Less content was made up for by a higher grind factor, and we loved it. It's tough in modern times after being used to other games but yeah D2 is even worse than PoE in terms of getting GG endgame gear solo self found.

I decided not to play it. I played it a lot, farmed it a lot, enjoyed it a lot, but time have passed. There are a lot of better and more enjoyable games out there. Even with the updated graphics I don't want to struggle with it again. There is nothing new in it what I haven't done a decade ago.

Diablo 2 was arguably one of the best Blizzard games in the Diablo series of games ever made. I personally enjoyed it a lot more than Diablo 3 and it's expansions.

Turns out target farming manald heal is really affective. You end up with 70 SOJs.
The fact you got 3 was actually really amazing for it being 1/52 unique rings from nm Andy.

Our data showed after post Uber event the drop rate overall for SOJ’s went way down. We used to get them all the time before it.
it’s fun seeing these runs again.
We have some really good data on Pindle (we have all champs and bosses but Pindle is my fav) as well (24hr runs @17~19sec kill speeds).

Way way back in pre expac D2 there was a time where the game would drop the unique rings in order, based on what was in your inventory. So you'd carry a manald and nagel and gamble away, because if it came out unique it was a guaranteed SOJ

I did andy bug and managed to farm 2 in 2 hours on players 8 with 700 mf. Every run took 30sec

The saddest times were d2. I had a group of buddies that would play all the time. We did this stuff, grind for days only to have botters and dupers lap us.
I think this about every video he has. Like most people, I got lost in the game and spent so much time on it. Then slowly the botting and duping just destroyed the game. Blizzard tried their best, but it was so early into anti-hacking in games they were always behind. Eventually all of us reached a point where we realized the game was just too far gone from what it was

Well, there is a old tip if you want SoJ, do tranvical runs till the council drops a set amulet. Pick it but do not indentify it, don't pick anything from the ground and start killing monsters, hit chests and barb find item - for this is good for sure - anything that can drop SoJ (iLvl 39). If you found a unique ring in this game, this is always be a SoJ (only the first one because when you pick anything it resets and only works on set amy from high council).

2200 runs can take about a minute each run maybe average 3 minutes. For a casual farmer, 20 runs an hour. 100 runs in nightmare is 5 hours. At the start of a new ladder you can run nightmare Andy and brute force an soj drop, and their rarity is so high you can get an entire full build character by selling the soj off.
You can make andariel runs with a sorc in 15 ~ 20 seconds even in hell
Average 30 seconds online
And 15~20 seconds with static offline map

Used to play D2 when I was a teenager and never got one in the 2-3 years of playing. Recently started again on Plugy and was questing my way through the flyer jungle and a random bird dropped a unique ring, identified it and was my first ever SOJ! Made my day!

@@huntbones3363 it's a mod that allows you to do some stuff that your normally can't in single player. For example you can do ladder only runewords, there is an infinite stash (much like using a mule on battlenet) and you can kill the cow king and still go back into the cow level. Among other things. Makes the game more enjoyable as a single player game.

I'm farming NM andy for SoJ's at the moment for D clone spawning to find as perfect an anni charm as possible for my bowazon. Managed to get 3 SoJ's, 3 30% mf nagels and a perfect 170% Witch Wild Strings so far in far fewer runs (~700 at this point).
As Dbrunski said, target MFing is not *usually* the best way to go, but I'm doing NM andy because I don't really need anything else that Hell andy can offer, so use your judgement here. If you also need Shakos, Wartravs, Titans, other uniques or low/mid tier runes, then Hell andy may be better for you.
I always remember the day i got 2 Sojs from the Summoner in Act2 in consecutive runs. Best day of my life..

About a year ago during a session of random farming I found two SoJs and a Mara's within the same 30 minutes.
I've quit since then because I kind of feel like I won the game. That's it. Never going to get that kind of luck again. Time to pack it in and retire.

Fun Fact, You can actually find a Stone of Jordan from Normal Baal. This one time on Bnet, I was perming a normal mule game for a friend and decided to go and kill Baal cause you know, perming mule games is boring. PING.. unique ring, ID and BAM SoJ. I've yet to find one from NM or Hell Andariel which is weird but, good to know that it can be found fairly early.

I personally prefer NM Andy runs for a couple of reasons. The first being slightly better odds, of course. Second being, they can be done earlier on with a much weaker sorc, at about the same pace. I also like certain items that she can drop. It is a good place to find SotVM, to help lower characters build up, etc. Otherwise, I like NM Mephisto for rings, he drops a high rate of dwarf stars and ravenfrosts. Also I think he is the best place to find those exceptional class specific uniques like titans, hoz, etc.

It's funny how rng works. I farmed Hell andariel just for fun, nothing particular. First run an SOJ. I was very happy. Did a couple more runs and later watched a movie. The same day, found another SOJ after 8 runs.
Dang dude, looks like you beat the odds pretty hard. At 775 MF (a conservative estimate based on what I believe your gear is just by looking at it), Andariel's SOJ drop odds are still 1:1321.
The drop odds are 1 to 31 for SoJ when NM Andy drops a unique ring, so identifying the 3rd SoJ as ring #92 points to extremely average luck.
I don't completely agree that the other items NM Andy drops are useless in hell; she does have very good odds for vipermagi, decent odds for Tal Rasha amulet, she can drop some pretty wild rare boots/circlet/gloves, and even decent rare rings. Also, on the weapon side, I think she can drop Ribcracker, which when upgraded is pretty nuts. Eth Hone Sundan can be wild as well. String of ears is another commonly used end game item which she drops "all the time". However, even if you can deck out a character pretty well from doing these runs, you'll have problems finding the real good stuff.
You can quest bug any act boss when on battle.net - the catch is that you have to get "stuck" in your quest progress on that boss, and only run it in games where that quest is completed. I used to make a cold sorc to run hell Meph in baalruns.
I found 3 sojs online manually in my life, i do remember them all because they are kind of rare for sure. One was from NM trist helping a friend, 2nd was from hell soul while clearing a baal throne and the last one was from hell diablo directly. Its one of those items that when you id it you're like hell yeah

I've played D2 hundreds and hundreds of hours, LOADS of it on MF sorcs.... Of All the unique rings I've ever found, only 1 was a SOJ. Tons of nagel, manald, and quite a few dwarf stars, a few raven frost, and one nature's peace.
Never found a bul-kathos.
And the SOJ was just from a regular mob outside nightmare act 5, clearing things for exp on my way to shenk.

Hell yeah man. Definitely worth it. Back in the day I collected 48 Nightmare Andy unique rings, that's what the stash allowed, I don't use mods. I got 2 SoJ's. Last year I decided to do it again, 48 more, not easy, takes time but then again 2 more SoJ's. So satisfying to find that ring. You gotta go Nightmare for sure.

The thing is, if you already farmed Andy and Mephisto on Hell to pieces already and still don't have a SOJ, then farming Andy on NM is just quicker, you can kill her much faster giving you faster odds to getting an SOJ than doing it on hell, which takes longer to kill Andy.

Older vid but i just got into D2R. 400 Nm Andy runs with no luck, changed to Hell Andy runs and got an Soj on run 8. I know its RNG, but i thought it was ironic. thanks for the vid.

A sample size of 2205 isn't really that large for statistical comparisons.

You haven't played much in those ten years then. Or at least not efficiently. I've played for 15 years and have probably found a few100 soj rings maybe even upwards of 300.
@@SuperZakaru I guess not efficiently. That wasn't my play style. I was never an item farmer. i ran diablo and cows and when the expansion released i ran baal for levels and whatever items they dropped. other then that i dueled.

I also did a lot of these runs with 730%MF to 870%MF until I had 3 SoJ (I never found it before) : the 1st was the #48, the 2nd #114 and the 3rd #128. I also found 2 Tal Rashas's amulets but no Telling of Beads Amulet (both have ~1 to 1940 to drop) and 1 Immortal King's Will (~1 to 300) with 40%MF.

3% chance of a unique ring from nm Andy being an SoJ. Doesn't sound that bad when you say it like that.
But then again when you ask yourself what the odds of a unique ring of any type to drop and then work out the maths after that... not so much!
@@UnreliableUsername 4,5% to get an unique ring (100 for 2200 runs), then 3% chance of that ring being a soj for 0.00135% chance to get a soj per run, thats 50% to get a single one after 500 runs , 74% chance after 1000, 87% after 1500 and 93% after 2000 runs (probabilities calcs). Honestly, screw getting a specific item in this game, farm for the best all around loot and work with the drops you have. At a perfect 1 minute per run (with joining the game included), it takes 33 hours and 20 minutes to do 2000 runs. Not worth it at all IMO.

Hardcore 99 barb og here even on hc people were filling mules and stashs of them. Games with valors shafts vamp gazes and stormshields laying on the flood with Akara selling them sojs covering the stash . Then came ladder and Uber Diablo. People vending means there's still a viable production. 1 death in hardcore usually means 10k runs flushed.

People seem to forget, you also need enigma armor for this (unless your a sorc). which is also very difficult to get.
I called it. 3 SoJs. I always had way better luck with hell Meph for sojs. Diablo for BK. Meph/Meph's council for Mara's

This proves why I don’t want to farm just nm andariel. Yes it’s higher chance just for soj but it would drive me nuts seeing all the other mostly worthless rings
