    This one brings back memories. My father was a caddy guy. He had a 59 Fleetwood that my mother wrecked. So he needed another. This was 1964. The back story is he was one of the first 3 people to bring Arabian Horses to the USA. So we lived on a large farm in the country. He was a dentist by profession. One saturday, he finished the farm work and went downtown Columbus, Ohio to buy a new Fleetwood. He was wearing bib overalls and a white T shirt, fairly dirty as he had been doing farm work. NO ONE would talk to him. Finally, after an hour someone asked him what he wanted. He said the blue metallic Fleetwood on the showroom floor. The salesman smirked and asked how he planned to pay for it. My father reached in the chest pocket of the bibs and pulled out $7500.00 in $100. Bills and asked him if he figured it was enough. 20 minutes later, he and I (I am 6) arre driving home. I learned never judge a book by the cover that day. When he died in 2001, the caddy was in the garage with 42,000 miles on it. Next to it was a 1978 Mercury Marquis , last of the large wheelbase with 52 miles. He drove it home from the dealership and parked it. Last I heard the caddy was in London, England. The new owner who bought it called for the history on the car. Love the caddy!

    These and the Toranado counterpart are the smoothest riding cars I ever rode in. Butter smooth and power that just catapults you forward. The one thing I sorely miss in today's cars is the pampered comfort of personal luxury cars. Beautiful example.

      Yup, that Toronado, FWD was a masterpiece too wasn't it? I used to see one around my East Van neighBOORhood back in the day! Most cars started losing their sleek styling, and character after 1972.

    • @josephconsoli4128

      @@mr.blackhawk142 As a kid growing up in Long Island, two neighbors had the Toronado's and I got a ride in one. My father worked for Cadillac and brought home Eldo's, so I got rides in many of those. This was the '70's when Cadillac was still really classy. Yes, in 1973 the unsightly impact absorbing guard rail bumpers make the cars look frumpy and heavy.

    Thank you for this video, Lou. Mr. Miller is a lucky man indeed, such a handsome automobile. Memories! My dad bought a new one of every year of this body style except 1967, starting in 1968 {firemist gold with black vinyl roof and black leather interior) and ending with a 1970 in firemist regatta blue, white top and white leather. The '70 had the even more insane 500 ci engine, with 400 HP and 550 ft/lb torque. It could literally burn rubber for an entire city block (and often did!) That silver thing on the suspension brace is the air pump for the self-leveling rear suspension and the headlight doors are retracted via manifold vacuum, the reservoir is that big black coffee can on the right inner fender (it also runs the cruise control if so equipped) I think this yellow paint was actually called cashmere, believe it or not. Again, this is a beautiful car. Thank you, Mr. Miller, for keeping this one on the road, and thank you Lou for videoing it. Top work!!

The hood I believe is 2 pieces on these with the welds covered by the chrome center molding. The bent center back glass also a very unique design element that ties in with the knife edged quarter panels and tapered tail lamps. The brochure is awesome (a piece of automotive history), today it's all about pushing customers to the website. I miss the nice color photographs of a hardcopy automotive brochure.

I also owned a 78 Toronado witch I guess would compare better to this caddy. The front wheel drive was something else when as a teen I could spin the front tires. Oh how many times friends thought I broke it when the smoke would roll from under the front fenders. LOL! I was young and dumb. TRANSaxle??? Watch yer language! This is a FAMILY channel! Right Lou??? 🤣 Seriously, I've never heard of that term before, so I Giggled it and found... "What is a transaxle vs transmission?
      Transmissions and transaxles both transmit power from your engine to your wheels. Transmissions are usually found in RWD vehicles, while transaxles are used in FWD cars. A transaxle is a combination of a transmission, axle, and differential.May 26, 2022"

      @Sigma, you have great taste in cars! Those cars you listed are at the VERY top of my wish-list! Add a 1968 Mustang Shelby GT500 KR convertible, or of course the Buick Rivieras, to make my list complete! I saw a 1963 Olds today. It was parked, so I had a good look at it. It was similar to this one. I don't have any $$$ so all I can do is...look! www.gmheritagecenter.com/images/gm-vehicle-collection/1963_Oldsmobile_Jetfire/1963_Oldsmobile_Jetfire1.jpg

    Great job, Stu and Lou! The 1968 Eldorado has no bad design angles. It is a stunning example of what GM design could achieve. This car as shown also has cloth upholstery which shows far better than the optional leather. The 68 Eldorado hood is so large it was stamped as 2 pieces, hence the full-length chrome strip.
    The rear leaf beam suspension sports 4 shocks, 2 air shocks, and 2 horizontal shocks. The long cylindrical tank under the hood produced about 275 psi to keep the rear level. This system fails quickly and is often replaced with manual fill Schrader valved air shocks.

    • @poisedforduty
      @poisedforduty Před 2 lety +1

      @@md11b777 I actually suspected that torsion bar suspension, was used before Chrysler used it as it was not patented, or the patent had ran out, it was a rub at GM fans that Chrysler was ahead of it's time in many ways.

    • @md11b777
      @md11b777 Před 2 lety +1

      @@poisedforduty Packards version was called "Torsion Level" which also had an active electric motor to keep the Packard level at all 4 corners. The handling was amazing for a car of that size. It was in their cars in 1955-56. The 1968 Eldorado also made good use of the front-drive, and front torsion bar set up but it was not near as sophisticated. The single rear leaf springs on the 67-69 Eldorados also lost their "temper" over time so the rear of the car would appear to sit low on its haunches. That in turn would car the air pump to fail to try to keep the rear level. The proper fix is to replace the springs.

  • @craigjorgensen4637
    @craigjorgensen4637 Před 2 lety +1

    For todays price of one gallon of gas you could fill that Eldorado’s tank back when it was new. It required premium leaded gas and if it was gently driven might get 8 MPG! If you floored it you could literally watch the fuel gauge drop! Those were classy cars and this one is a nice example.
