I have been enthralled by Aditya Sengupta's Asha Jawar Majhe. He is the director we have long been waiting for in Bengali cinema. I bet he will shine on as years go by.
So glad "Once Upon A Time In Anatolia" got mentioned here. People please watch it, make sure the best quality print you have and the biggest screen possible. Watch it in the dark at night. I couldn't make much sense of the ending, but the whole movie kept me gripped. Its one of those movies like "call me by your name" where you feel everything that is on the screen, wind, temperature, arididiy, etc....
@@darshanasoni9145 Hey I watched it some three years back, it wasn't available anywhere so I used 'you know what' to download... If you can't figure out then tell me, I might look for a link...
Asha Jawar Maajhey and Jonaki both were absolutely brilliant films. Not many directors today tread the path of grief and can show it in such a nuanced manner. I cant wait to watch Once Upon a Time in Calcutta.
ASHA JAWAR MAJHE left me in trance, what a great movie it was!!!! However, Aditya is less celebrated, he should get more media attention... Waiting to watch the film. Thanks Anupama for reviewing this film.
When Anupama loves a film, her review turns poetic. It makes you want to fall in love with the film too. Always enjoyed falling in love with so many films because of Anupama.
Nice review Anupama, personally feeling a bit bad about being harsh on your other reviews (guess it was an over reaction on my part + can't stand Jhanvi K & feel RKHirani is insanely over rates. Also said all that cause honestly I feel bad about not being in the industry in any which way, even though I previously was & had watched / still do more media than anyone I've come across on web or personally, this isn't a job application, just ramblings of someone somewhat lonely) , AVS is certainly distinctive (far more than the city). Once again, realise this might not mean much, but your review are good ( it's tough not having stimulating discussions with most in this city, tiered of influencing and talking to friends, the only time I genuinely feel I'm learning or impressed with thoughts / commentary is when I watch / listen to Western channels. Anyway, take care)
anupama has become so cynic lately, every movie she finds mistakes. sherni was such a good movie and she says, cheese was missing, not sure what makes her happy.
After Once Upon a time in Hollywood my ‘phoney shit detection radar’ goes haywire everytime I hear Once upon a time in..... My word that was some waste of time in which I am sure Anupama would have found layers and dimensions and lehsun in it.
You cannot call someone out for not getting their "diction" right when it is not their first or second language and they've never studied it. I'm a Maharashtrian and I bet you wouldn't get many Marathi words right, but that's okay. Languages are complex and we live in a multicultural world. No need to pull someone up for not getting some pronunciations exactly right when it is not their native language.
Calcutta and Bengali Cinema in general reflect the decadence of the society and West Bengal State under decades of Communist Rule followed by TMC Rule. I hope that Bengal doesn't become another West Bangladesh due to change in Demography by illegal immigrants. Then Bengali Cinema will be even more darker and despotic. Then for the Bengalis, Rabindra Nath Tagore's vision will appear like an illusion from the past.
Please don't comment on what you don't necessarily understand. The fact that your intellect can't capture the essence of these Bengali movies does not mean they are influenced by communism and are despotic in nature.
I found his films neither new(original) nor revolutionary but dragging and boring. Moreover his films are pretentious and allegedly plagiarized from different other films(its title also has a controversy) and that is quite evident in the look and feel of each of his flms. His filmmaking style is similar to the Iranian and European cinema. The fact is, I think, he watches world cinema and applies it to Indian culture(same practice done by the Bangladeshi filmmaker Mostofa Sarwar Farooki) which doesn't go at all and looks odd because that's commensurate with the life styles of other countries(Iranian/European here), not ours.
I think melancholic meditation is not your style, I suggest watching and rewatching of Dev movies such as Paglu and Paglu2 to keep yourself entertained.
