    Today I am going to teach about the Low G ukulele. What it is, what it does, if it is right for you and should you buy one? The low G is a metal string that is tuned an octave below... so what does that mean? What does it do? It means that that the string is an entire 12 notes lower in pitch than the "re-entrant" G string that you currently have tuned on your ukulele. It means you get bass heavy chords, you can play bass lines and your melodies have more range that they did, but... that doesn't necessarily mean that it is better in every sense. So, let's talk about it, is it right for you? What ukulele sounds best with it? What are the advantages and disadvantages of the low G, let's break it down.

    Excellent explanation. I came to Uke from guitar and have a tenor with high G because I like the contrast. When I come across a low G piece to try I capo a guitar at the 5th fret and just use the top four strings.

    Glen Rose is a jazz musician/teacher with courses on jazzy ukulele. He says he highly recommends using a low G if you want to play beautiful jazz chords. Here's his explanation and demo: Why I use a Low G on my Ukulele - Glen Rose czcams.com/video/mLq91wmtevU/video.html . I use an Aquila Red low-G non-wound strings on my tenor and concert ukes with low G. They don't squeak when you slide your finger along the string, whereas metal-wound low-G strings make an annoying squeak. Some people say the Aquila Reds break too easily. I haven't had that problem. When they're new, I tighten them gradually to give them hours to stretch and adapt.

      I watched that video! A looooong time ago when I was teaching myself about jazz and chord melody. I bought a low G string and… I didn’t vibe with it, at first. Over time I did but the better my arranging skills got that more I used the high G for jazz, emphasizing fluid melodies over bigger chords. My low G I mostly use to strum my favorite cowboy songs on hahaha

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  Před 6 měsíci

      That is instinct for sure but push yourself with the high G and explore the comfort zone. It is very cool for instrumental styles and playing melody. Well, do what you enjoy but if you have two ukuleles keep one high G.

    High, low, 8-strings & Banjolele …you know you need one of each…and possibly an electric too🤔🤗🤩!!! I put a low G on a concert that I’d bought as a ‘cheaper’ Uke for outdoors & boating ……😮😵‍💫🤯!!!…..it’s now my favourite go-to Uke, it utterly changed the volume & tone. Get yourself a low G string and just try it on all your regular ukes, you might just make a pleasant discovery😊.

    I've been playing my 8 string uke a lot recently. It has both low and high G. It is supposed to have 2 different C's and drone on the 2 highest , but I have a drone on the C's as the high C ( oh yeah!!!!) is a bit too high.

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  Před rokem

      That depends more on the ukulele. I’ve played sopranos that sounded great at the 12th fret and tenors that have no sustain at the 10th. I would say the best thing you could do is get your hands on one and remember anything over the 12th fret is a bonus.

      @@TenThumbsProductions Thank you for this well done video. Have spent many hours today on the net researching Low G strings. I was leaning towards a wound Low G at first, but read comments including yours saying they don't last very long. I have a solid mahogany Kala tenor, which came with D'Addario Titanium strings with high G. I like more of a deeper guitar sound over the traditional ukulele sound. I am considering a Worth Brown fluorocarbon Low G set of strings, or D'Addario EJ99TLG - Pro-Arte Carbon Ukulele String Set. Any feedback appreciated. Thank you.

    • @TenThumbsProductions
      @TenThumbsProductions  Před 3 měsíci

      You mean can the lowest note on the lowest string be tuned to B? That will create a lot of tension on the neck and it is bad for the guitar.
