  • One of the most talked-about segments we've ever done for Outdoors Delmarva involved a breed of pigeons known as "parlor rollers". These birds are genetically inclined to roll along the ground, rather than fly. Meet this special breed, and the folks who raise them.

It’s actually a genetic impulse that causes them to instinctively roll. It doesn’t hurt them. I guess it’s sort of like pigeon Tourette’s but instead of shaking or other body movements, they roll.

@@ha7703 If they were having seizures they would be dead. Seizures are painful and brought on by brain conditions, and often lead to death. The spasms reflected in the roller pigeons are more like ‘ticks’, like a person with Tourette’s. Just like those that experience symptoms of Tourette’s, they are often unaware of these spasms when they are in motion, and when they are not being used for sport, they can live regularly like any other pigeon, and when they are, they are blissfully unaware. Although I agree that it would be nice if they could live without ticks, the requirement of preventing that would mean forcing the all roller pigeon species into extinction. This would be impossible, as it would require the putting down of hundreds of otherwise healthy birds, and would bring a thousand year old bloodline to a halt, which would NOT make the breeders happy. As much as it may upset you that these birds are inclined to rolling around on the floor, there isn’t much that can be done. Besides, there are much worse acts of animal abuse going on in the world than this one, these pigeons get to live with partners in a flock, have babies, and live an almost completely normal life. Meanwhile in places like slaughterhouses, animals live in unsafe, cramped conditions, and experience painful suffering and death. These birds do not die rolling, so it is not harmful to them, and other than that are perfectly happy, so I’m afraid there isn’t much that can be done if you wish for the sport to end.
