    IF YOU ARE CONFUSED:
In the secret ending it is revealed that Erlang (the first guy you fight at the start of the game) actually conspired with Wukong to kill him, as it's the only way to help him get rid of his enchanted headband. As long as the headband is on his head, he can never truly disobey the heavenly court. Erlang also sealed Wukong's memories in his third eye, so after the secret boss fight those memories are released and given to the protagonist.
In the bad ending, the protagonist never reclaims Wukong's memories so he ends up accepting the headband, trapping him again to the will of the court.
In the good ending, just before accepting the headbind, you get a closeup of the protagonist's eyes as he started reliving Wukong's journey, played in reverse culminating in his very first battle against the court. In this ending he possibly came to his senses and would not accept the headband.
And yeah, the old monkey may be an agent of the court, as he put the protagonist on this journey to reunite Wukong's essence, but without his memories, creating a Wukong that would bend his knees to the court.

Erlang is the sincerest friend we always wished for, but hardly ever met.
Wukong and Erlang used to be peers when Wukong served in the celestial palace, despite their huge difference in identity (Erlang is the military general while Wukong is merely a "horseman"). The horseman is the lowest rank "celestial official" in the celestial palace but the naive Wukong used to think it was a big deal, until he later found out when he was not invited to the fruit tasting ceremony (apparently due to his insignificant identity), and learned that his job assignment was barely an insult from the lord Yu Di, as the celestials thought Wukong was only a filthy lowlife creature and does not deserve a place in the majestic Celestial Palace.
Wukong got provoked when he found out the truth, he then made a huge mess in the palace, fled away, and paid a visit to the East Sea Palace and took the [Sea stabilizing "pillar"] (or "needle" in its direct translation) from the sea palace which later became his weapon - the infamous monkey king bar. He then declared war to the Celestial Palace, Where Wukong also battled with Erlang (Er lang actually subdued Wukong in the end but it was with the help from other celestial Tai Shang lord).
Er lang's third eye is actually called the [Heaven's eye] which Erlang can break through any delusion and see the truth (kind of like Wonder woman's Lasso of Truth), I guess that is where Erlang learned about Wukong's true nature - rebellious but with kind heart, dare to challenge and protect the average from the unfairness.
If you pay close attention to Erlang's speech and facial expression in the beginning scene, the actions or trials he put on the protagonist and the final words he said to him before pushing him back in the shrine in the "good ending", you will know his brotherly love for Wukong and how he wished to spare Wukong from being controlled (the headband) by the corrupted bureau - Celestial Palace. Wukong is dead but what perished was only his body, his unfaded will and consciousness is retrieved and succeeded by the protagonists through his own journey and Erlang even said his (protegonist) journey has just began.
Lastly, some may ask, if Erlang is all about to challenge the corruption in the Celestial Palace, why didn't he stand up against the Lord Yu Di himself. Well. He is Yu Di's nephew. The oriental mythology largely preserve the characters and virtue value of the east - Filial, unlike the greek mythology - incest and slaughtering within the family (just kidding).
Apologies for my poor command of English (not my native language).

Thank you for the explanation but two things
      1) Nowhere in the novel did it mention that Erlang and Wukong were friends, or that they got along. Erlang literally just showed up once to battle Wukong and disappeared from the novel.
      2) What was that form that Erlang used to fight you in the game?

@@lane5686 Hi, that's why I mentioned at the start that Erlang and Wukong were just peers for a period of time when Wukong worked for the Celestial Palace. Erlang is truly whom we want to friend with, isn't? He might not be friend and hang out with Wukong but he understood the true nature of Wukong and help relieved Wukong and the entire of his kind (the monkey clan) from being huntdown by Celestial Palace's order (Wukong claimed his Immortality even before becoming buddha as he wiped his name off the "death note" in Yan Luo palace). To your second question, are you asking about the colossal lion form Erlang transformed into? That is called法天象地 which is like a high level shapeshifting/body enlarging skill which only few celestial mastered (interestingly, only both Wukong and Erlang used this shapeshifting skill in JTW as I recall).

So the true ending is basically Erlang and Wukong's fight was just an act to remove the golden headband that supposed to be removed when Wukong completes his journey. This changes the whole dynamic between Wukong and the celestial palace, and basically completely invalidate his whole journey because the palace still didn't trust him. Chan Buddhism, in particular, emphasizes the direct experience of enlightenment and the realization of the concept of “emptiness.” Practitioners believe that all phenomena, including the self, objects, and the universe, are ultimately empty of inherent existence. The pursuit of material desires is seen as an illusion. The world is originally empty, and everything within it is a manifestation of this emptiness. If one understands that the mind is inherently empty, there is no need to resist external temptations. Instead, experiences flow through the mind without leaving any attachment or trace.

    @hoanganhvu7670 Před 17 dny +44

I will briefly summarize the content before the events in the game take place for those who have never read or watched Journey to the West.
(The summary below is based on the 1986 version of Journey to the West - the most successful adaptation of the story.)
After descending into the sea and arriving at the Dragon King's palace to search for a weapon, Sun Wukong took the "Ruyi Jingu Bang" (Golden-Hooped Staff), weighing 13,800 kg. Later, Wukong was dragged down to the underworld by the King of Hell. There, not only did he refuse to submit, but he also slaughtered all the demons in the underworld and erased the monkeys from the "Book of Life and Death." Wukong's actions terrified both the Dragon King and the King of Hell, who flew to heaven to report to the Jade Emperor. The Jade Emperor then invited Sun Wukong to heaven to become an immortal and assigned him the position of a stable hand. At first, Wukong arrogantly thought this was a high-ranking position, but he soon discovered that it was just a lowly stable job, and he angrily left for the mortal realm. With no other choice, the Jade Emperor granted Wukong a higher position, making him the caretaker of the Peach Garden. However, when a banquet was held in the heavenly palace, Wukong was not invited. Feeling slighted, he stole the peaches he was supposed to guard and even drank the elixir of immortality. The Jade Emperor then dispatched 100,000 celestial soldiers and deities to capture Wukong, but they failed. Erlang Shen descended and dueled with Wukong, and both fought evenly. Even when Wukong used his transformation abilities, Erlang saw through them because he possessed the "Yin-Yang Eye," which could see through everything. Unable to subdue Wukong, the "Supreme Old Lord" - a celestial deity - placed Wukong into the "Furnace of Immortality" and cooked him for 49 days. Not only did Wukong survive, but he also acquired the ability "Fiery Eyes Golden Gaze" (similar to the Yin-Yang Eye but weaker) due to prolonged exposure to the furnace's fire. He then wreaked havoc in the heavenly palace, causing everyone to tremble in fear. In the end, Buddha "Tathagata" challenged Wukong: if Wukong could fly out of the Buddha's palm and reach the "Pillar of Heaven," the Buddha would allow Wukong to replace the Jade Emperor. Wukong flew and flew until he encountered five enormous pillars, which he believed to be the "Pillar of Heaven." He marked the tallest pillar, but when he returned, it turned out that the "tallest pillar" was merely the Buddha's middle finger. Since Wukong could not escape the Buddha's palm, the Buddha imprisoned him under the "Five Elements Mountain" for 500 years (due to a talisman stuck on top of the mountain, Wukong couldn't free himself) until Tang Sanzang released him. Wukong then became Tang Sanzang's disciple and embarked on the journey to retrieve the "Buddhist scriptures." After 81 tribulations, the journey ended successfully.
(For those who have read Journey to the West and still wonder why Wukong didn't carry his master on the "Somersault Cloud" to speed things up, it's because the group had to go through all 81 tribulations to obtain the "Buddhist scriptures." In fact, most of the monsters they encountered during the journey were released by deities from heaven to test Wukong.)
Thank you for taking the time to read this.
(There might be some confusing parts because English is not my first language, and I wrote the entire text above and translated it using ChatGPT.)

To whom are confused by the chapter 4 ending, here is explanation:
Zhu Bajie admired the Taiyin Star Lord (not Chang'e), but on his journey, he encountered a handmaiden who turned out to be Chang'e (Chang'e is a title; all handmaidens of the Taiyin Star Lord are called Chang'e). The Jade Emperor was secretly meeting with the Taiyin Star Lord when Tian Peng (Bajie) accidentally saw them. As a result, he was banished to the mortal realm. This Chang'e, unable to forget Tian Peng, also descended to the mortal world and became a spider demon.
When the banished Bajie saw Gao Cuilan at Gao Village, he mistook her for Chang'e and pursued her. However, Gao Cuilan was terrified when she saw Bajie's true form. As Bajie continued westward, he reached the Pansi Cave, where the reincarnated Purple Spider immediately recognized the pig-headed figure she had longed for. The two fell in love, and Bajie spared the Purple Spider during this tribulation. The Purple Spider bore Bajie’s daughter and waited for him until her death. Due to the earlier case of mistaken identity, the Purple Spider said to Bajie on her deathbed, "You're still as foolish as before," referring to both his mistake and his reluctance to acknowledge them out of fear of the Heavenly Court’s retribution.
Even someone as powerful as the Monkey King was killed by the Heavenly Court. The Bull Demon King, a mighty warlord in his own right, suffered the destruction of his family and the scattering of his loved ones just because he got entangled with someone of destiny. How could the small Pansi Cave stand against the Heavenly Court? Bajie didn’t have the skills of his elder brother, nor the power of the Bull Demon King.
If he doesn't look back, he can't love her; if he does, it will bring her harm. So Bajie chose not to acknowledge her-he couldn’t. Bajie was determined to help the destined one, and even if he failed, the only price would be his own life. He would no longer drag his loved ones into it. The best love he could give her was to let go.

Though, without having read the stories of Journey to the West, it is difficult to fully appreciate all the references and implications of the cinematics etc. For example, the end of chapter one cinematic, especially the secret boss, refers to an old abbot in the novel who is attached to beautiful things (collecting many kasayas - robes) and conspires to steal a heavenly silk from Tripitaka by burning him and his travelling companions to death. Monkey overhears the plot and intervenes resulting in the burning down of the monastery. I've only read the first 25 chapters of the epic. I'm motivated to read the next three volumes!

The True ending is Basically Huisheng.
Wukong knows he is cooked since he can't take off the crown (If yall don't know what the crown is, it gets tighter and tighter if Wukong disobeys.) and will remain a lap dog for the Celestials till the end. He may be immortal, but to live those infinite time being ordered around instead of being free, he knows there is only one choice. Death.
As for Huisheng. It's reincarnation, but also not. It is a person having someone else's memory. It's both him and the other person sharing two bodies. Imagine editing a video and just dumping another's video on the middle.
He did thus To make sure that he (The new Wukong) won't make the same mistake again and be free. That is what Wukong really wanted aside from immortality.
The Bad ending is just a Cycle repeating itself.

to have him killed. This was the only way to break the curse of the enchanted headband that bound Wukong to the will of the heavenly court. Erlang had also hidden Wukong's memories within his third eye, and once you defeat the secret boss, those memories are unlocked and passed on to the protagonist.
In the bad ending, the protagonist fails to recover Wukong's memories, leading to his acceptance of the headband, which once again binds him to the court’s control.
In the good ending, just before the protagonist is about to accept the headband, there’s a moment where you see a closeup of his eyes as he begins to experience Wukong’s journey in reverse, starting from his first battle against the heavenly court. This suggests that the protagonist may regain his senses and reject the headband in this ending.
It's also worth noting that the old monkey could be a covert agent for the court. By setting the protagonist on this quest to reunite Wukong's essence but without his memories, he could have been aiming to create a version of Wukong that would willingly serve the court.

FYI, erlang god、red boy and wukong are three salient characters in chinese mythology who are the signs of revolt, or freedom(probably American perspective?). erlang have his own land and army, independent from heaven order, and he once fought against heaven's will for the purpose of resecuring his mother; red boy suffered from his father unreasonable abuse, and he did suicide to pay back his father who never stop trying to kill red boy since he does not obey, thus consequently red boy always try to kill his father, tuo ta li tian wang. All three of them have sufficient reason to revolt, and they are nature allies. In fact, they never stopped try to revolt which is clearly demonstrated in their own stories. haha in fact the meaning of your think is complete opposite if you really understand the story:
The debate about whether human nature is good or evil is a traditional topic in Chinese culture. Many philosophers have tried to find the answer. Modern philosophy tells us that human nature is complex and cannot be summarized by the binary idea of good or evil.
the fat man in yellow clothes, is actually a disciple of Maitreya Buddha. He has boundless magic power and profound wisdom, but he is obsessed with debate and does not hesitate to use the method of inferring the effect from the cause to achieve his goal of successful debate. This is also the reason why he betrayed his master Maitreya Buddha in Chapter 3: he is not at all He is obsessed with the truth and only cares about winning or losing the debate.
The big turtle in this cartoon is actually the final boss of Chapter 3. He made a bet with his junior brother (Tang Seng) and tried to prove the argument that human nature is evil, so he changed into a big turtle that can secrete treasures and gave himself to the villagers.
So He picked a poor fishing village to test, however
      1. When he was rescued by fishermen, they already knew he is not human, but rescued him anyway.
      2. When rescued, he can’t wait to show fishermen that he has golds and pearls under his skins. Yet, the villagers didn’t kill him.
      3. Instead villagers worshipped him, sent him tributes, built temples. It’s “fair trade”
      4. Official and monks didn’t take the treasures themselves. They hire someone to dispense them fairly.
      5. When that one villager was lured (Yall can see that the first man was hypnotized, his collar was lifted by air and turtle‘s eye was glowing. huang mei cheated.), officials first reaction was to stop him and other mobs. They were trying to maintain orders.
Humankind has proven lots of time that they are not greedy nor heartless, but Huang Mei only needs to win once. even he won by cheating

I sense the old monkey at the end represents the monk Tang Sangzi in the memories. It's the manifestation of the dharma and restraint developed during tbe journey west. It also why it has the final task of placing the headband on the reconstituted avatar of the player.
In the original journey, Tang Sangzi was reluctant to enslave Wukong to the head band. However, he had proven to be unrepentant and arrogant.
If the player had followed the same path and be worthy to earn freedom then it stayed off.

I do not know if that made sense to anybody reading this.
BTW, Erlang providing the memories of Wukong to the doppelganger/splitting image at the end, thus having to refuse to wear the headband makes it feel like it is such a monkey move of figuring out to get rid of the headband is by making another version of himself (AKA Wukong) of not wearing it at all.

    OHHHH...
So in this story, despite completing his Journey, Wukong is still shackled by his headband. That's why Erlang said that it doesn't matter if he achieved Buddhahood. Thus started "our" journey, which is just a roundabout way to release the headband. It was a high risk high reward plan as we must prove our worth to be him. If we failed, then Sun Wukong is no more
Moreover, the court is cunning. They placed the old monkey to guide us. So even if we succeed, we would become the court's puppet instead and basically making the whole Journey to the West null. But in the good ending, we regained Wukong's memory and succeeded Wukong's plan. And from this onward, it's all a brand new story, a myth outside the Journey to the West

    • @GranMaj
      @GranMaj Před 21 dnem +3

Not removing the headband when Wukong completes his journey is basically the flashpoint of this game with other adaptations. It completely invalidates Wukong's journey because the point of the Journey for Wukong is to "Rehabilitate" him (This is so oversimplified but just for context is enough), but the celestial palace still didn't trust him and the first person that would realize the deceit was Erlang.

Putting this put here because I saw someone asking for this in the comments on CZcams and elsewhere.
Please developers, DON'T NERF WUKONG in the final fight. 🙏🏻
It's supposed to be impossibly strong (at first) and hard to defeat, so the player can keep trying until he masters the abilities, and finally be worthy of bearing his name as the Destined One.
That's the whole point of the game, find Sun Wukong a worthy successor so his sacrifice of himself won't be in vain, right? The player/protagonist is SUPPOSED to wonder at one point whether they can really defeat him or not, wether he's just too strong and we're just frauds or we can really do it.
If you don't have AT THE VERY LEAST the perseverance to keep going, never give up against all odds, even if this seems impossible to win (just like Sun Wukong did all his life...), than you don't deserve to bear Wukong's name. 🤷🏻‍♀️
(Also, for someone who plays Soulslike games it's not even that hard...? Don't wanna brag tho, I SUCK AT SOULSILKES LOL, it's just that this boss seems perfectly balanced to me, plus it makes perfect sense... It did take me 5 hours to beat too ahahah).
    That's what I think tho. 🤔

  • @Maxtime123
    @Maxtime123 Před 20 dny +9

My understanding of this game's story:
We play as one of the many monkeys that was chosen by the elder to follow Wukong's Path to Buddhahood while also collecting every remnants left by the previous Wukong.
The monkey we play attained Buddhahood and became the next Wukong after collecting the remnants and memories of what's left of the previous Wukong without the Celestial Court's headband.
So rather than reincarnation, it's more like passing the title of "Wukong" to the successor since in this game, "Wukong" isn't the actual name of the first monkey but a title given to him by the Celestial Court and anyone following the Monkey King's path of Buddhahood will bare the name "Wukong" along with the predecessors memories and experiences.

The second/secret ending has you getting back your memories thus fully becoming the old Wukong.
