Building a Medieval Castle in Modern Times
Vložit
- čas přidán 12. 06. 2016
- It’s hard to fathom how magnificent castles were built centuries ago. One group set out to understand just that by building their own masterpiece two hours outside of Paris. Tucked away in a forest, a team of master builders and archeologists are attempting to construct Guédelon, a castle from the 13th century, using only medieval techniques.

Great Big Story is a video network dedicated to the untold, overlooked & flat-out amazing. Humans are capable of incredible things & we're here to tell their stories. When a rocket lands in your backyard, you get in.
This is going to confuse the hell out of future archaeologists!
there's ton of footage with the location thoooo
@Rehan Zainul Abdeen Oh shit, Like Blade Runner 22? The Blackout, this so cool
🤣
Probably
@@gooddog6745 like they will have the footage though, or the means to play it
i like how they're also dressed appropriately.
They're wearing different variations of Dans potato sack!!😱😱
Did you not pause the video at points where they were constructing to see what they were wearing? And they also have some 21st century tools.
However, because they are using 800-year old techniques and not modern techniques, I still think what they're doing is incredibly awesome!
The Boba Bandit AYYYY PHANDOM WASSUP
dan's flirting face AAAAAYYYYY
You don't just build a medieval castle in jeans :D
Seeing videos like this wants me to just dedicate my life to making something unique, for the fulfilment
BUMP - this is a reminder, sir. Make it happen :)
Like Coral castle in Florida. supposedly the owner built the castle by himself using levers for mechanical advantage.
Agreed
I'm 13. I have already done that.
You can make a child
The stockpile is full my lord ( memories)
not enough wood my lord
Hitman Holland not enough stone milord
My lord, you have not slept for days
Assassins are scaling the walls sire !
Corrie Brink wolves are abroad in the land my lord the peasants are troubled
I had the chance to visit it twice already, approx 5 years apart, and it was awesome to see the progress made. I'll go and visit again once it's all done. It's such a great project. I love it!
WE NEED MORE CASTLES!
DEUS VOLT!
We certainly do!
Peax Ful game of thrones fan here
and less cubicles.
Just wait .
I definitely went here for like a school thing a few years ago and we all got excited cuz we were going to “help build it” for a day, we ended up just carrying piles of lumber up a hill for 2 hours lol
Josh Klemmensen LOL
imagine doin that for 25 years ;)
You did help build.
To carve stone is nothing compared to wood cutting and blacksmith work there !
every little bit helps!
Amazing work. Such Passion.
agreed
I'm waiting to hear "Silly English-Your mother was a hamster and your father smelled of elderberries!!" from the ramparts
King Arthur and his squire skip to the castle wall to the sound of two coconuts being hit together because they couldn't afford horses XD... That movie made my childhood great. I've probably seen that movie a dozen times a child. Haven't seen it in a long time though.
Much respect from Romania for their work.
I hope they will open it to public one day !
you can visit you must to know Who they are not work on winter for respect medieval time work
If they're using the traditional concrete, then that stuff didn't set properly in winter. :) That's what delayed construction for many centuries.
They use stone. Hand crafted stone :-) That's even slower than concrete form the past :-)
Aren't the stones held together with mortar? That's what I meant, it wasn't really concrete.
epSos.de
Hey, they are actually looking for a blacksmith ;)
Yup its in france but i mean if you have free time during summer you can learn blacksmithing there and start hammerin'
im glad to find other Shadiversity fans here right now.
Hope to see it in person one day!
+Heri Rubi Looking forward to it! Thanks!
Dont wait. The purpose of it is to see workers in action doing it. If you wait, and its finished, you'd miss the whole point. (i've been there)
It has been my dream as an historian to build/ open a number of historicaly accreate themed hotels showing people what it was really like. This vid will aid me in building a castle (should my idea take off) thank you amazing vid
You can participate to the construction if you want. It's a really good experience.
Pierre Dudoret cool! I wonder if my Uni will let me take this on instead of a dig site do you know how to get in contact ?
www.guedelon.fr/en/how-can-i-participate_95.html
They have special formulas for sudents, usually in construction fields, so you may be lucky. Also, it's actually a concept of experimental archeology. For instance, a few years ago remains of a wooden watermill have been found. A replica has been built in Guedelon, is currently working and much has been learnt from this experiment.
Pierre Dudoret thank you so much
Do it. Either for school, or for vacations, a week there shaping stone, hacking wood, stacking rocks, ... is really worth it. I've already done this twice, and plan to do it every year.
we need longer videos!!
Mishak Heyman rude
No
Look up absolute history channel. They did a 5part series on this
This is REALLY cool guys! Keep up the great work. I really hope one day to be able and come to visit your new old castle! :-) Vive la France! :-)
This place was my dream. I always dreaming for some amazing place like this. Somebody please take me there
I never visited it yet but i plan on doing it in 2020 when it will be done :D
This place is going on my bucket list
Someone should show this do Shadversity!
JonatasAdoM i was thinking about thé same thing
Shadversity already review this Castle
@Matthew (Student) Agonoy yes, look at "How castle are made" video and he always mention this castle
Now He's doing it himself!
im afraid you're about 2 years too early.
I have literally always wanted to know what one of these would look like newly built! I am very excited about this project!
Incredible! It's only sad that it will take so long! A dream of mine to live in a castle but to appreciate the amount of work it takes to build in the 13th century way and its resilience! They last far longer than modern buildings because they were built to withhold from attacks in battle... Bravo! Wish i were a part of this :) Good luck and I hope you all get to see it finished every single one of you!
A man in Lebanon Ohio built a castle by hand too. He gathered all of the stones from the river close by and built the whole thing by himself. It's pretty impressive.
Postman's Castle?
I've been watching videos on LARP and then I bumped into this. So, naturally, it made me imagine what it would be like to larp in that castle and then I started wondering if they'd hold larps there once it's done :)
I visited it as a child, I can see that the castle is more complete now! :)
That is so beautiful and amazing
I give them credit, it's not easy to build a castle in 21 century! Well done
It's fascinating! I care so much about medieval buildings, castles, and science from the middle ages.
Guess what Shad's doing!
I'm fairly certain there's a documentary series on this. I saw one episode once and I haven't been able to find it since, until now!
You may be thinking of "secrets of the castle", a BBC series filmed there. I watched it on youtube last year, I think it's still online.
Fidel Squire thanks!
Le plus bel hommage jamais fait à la Main , l'Outil ,et le Geste . Bravo à tous
How beautiful! Cant wait to see the project as it continues on! :D
Saw this video years ago and its such a cool thing to be doing. Who doesnt want to just run off and build a castle? 😁❤
Shadiversity is building one 😁
But what about dragons?
Once they complete it, I will call my banner men, assemble a large army, and lay a long lasting siege to take this castle over. They will surrender before the next winter. This castle is the key of the entire supply route of the forest. I will ensure my domination here.
I'm ready to fight my lord
Ah ben ça, alors! J'aurais bien voulu participer à ça!! De toute beauté!! Félicitations à tous pour cette merveille!!
God bless their lives and work!
No castles near me in the US. This is incredible! I would love to visit. What stone is used to construct the walls?
The one found near the place.
Local sandstone and limestone.
You can learn more on their channel :
czcams.com/channels/y9Kti8oDm_wmbU7-yLRfog.html
It's subtitled.
I'm an operative stone mason -- I want to come over and get on this job for a time. please tell me how.
Old but gold
I love this than modern world
Beautiful 🏰
"What do you do for a living?"
0:28
Those towers better have some MATCHIKULATIONS!!!
ALL HAIL THE MACHICULATIOOOONSS!
Those are good and all, but what about dragons?
The ultimate larping experience.
I wish castle is everywhere.
I'm a sucker for medieval castles
One of the best projects I have seen in a long time..
Spectacular. My mind can't process that a castle that looks older than the country I live in (United States) is actually just a few years older than me!
That's... totally... BADASS!!!! Just went to their website. Yes, it's open to the public. They started construction in 1997 (I just read)... so, what, four more years? I've never known the French to be on time... (sorry, I couldn't resist). Truly, this is awesome.
I would love to do this, but god damn building codes require me to have unnecessary things like "fire exits"
I'll check this channel again in 2 years to see if its done.
The point is to see it getting it done. :)
Come directly to the castle. It will be over in 2023.
One down one to go
They did a five part series for the BBC about this with Ruth Goodman and her crew.
The sheer effort to cut and move masses of material to the site, especially if up a steep mound!!!
Good job guys, that will keep the English out!
I love this sort of idea, a real feel for history, would love to go see this castle with my own eyes
That is so cool... Must've been an honor.
They were doing the same thing in Arkansas, but they ran out of funding. I'm saddened that they had to stop their work. So now there is the "footprints" of a 21st Century castle made with 13th Century technique in Lead Hill, Arkansas (I won't say half built because it was no where near being halfway completed). It was shut down in 2012.
This is a secret fantasy of mine. I can't believe people are actually doing it.
I love medieval castel
Has anyone watched a series by Ruth Goodman about the building of this very castle? Very interesting; believe it's still here on CZcams.
I went there during my holiday and it looked exactly like a castle and it was so realistic
Because it is realistic lol
when video games role playing is not enough))
Omg i was there for a day with a group and we helped build some of the foundation
Formidable! Super idée du passé!!
Awesome... was wondering if people would ever try do this... question now lies in how much quicker would it take with modern equipment & methods? And can you equate/compare the difference???
How wonderful! I applaud everyone's passion and dedication. Was this castle based on another castle or was this designed by the builders? I hope that this marvelous achievement will be opened to the public. Good video.
Its actually open. They finance the project by the visitors
it's base on others castle and they used the year 1229 as a model for the start of the construction in 1995, since, they follow the technics evolution.
It's beautiful
I have to visit!
Absolutely incredible!!!!
Awww man they living a dream of mine. Fantastic work
That's so beautiful!
I am jealous! I've been dreaming of doing this for decades.
Avesome... I have to visit this place.
Outstanding!
C'est un equipe magnifique!
I wish these people lived near me. I would love to apprentice under some of these people and help build that castle.
You can apply, there was an english carpenter last season of building. But you'll have to learn French, like in Foreign Legion. And i guess you must have some basic certificate at least
Holy shit, it's still in construction.
Fucking amazing
GOOD LUCK ..LIKE A PIECE OF ART
Hi guys, could you please let me know which materials did you used instead of cements and how did you curve stone in ancient way?
The Chinese used a paste of rice and powdered lime (rock, not fruit) for their mortar and worked very well.
Maybe sand + Paris plastre
Here is your answer : czcams.com/video/dXoM77KB8h4/video.html
I wish this video was longer
It's gorgeous
I want that job.
same
In Hungary we call these crazy castles because you must be crazy to start to build one. They are usually built by one man. We have a few, the most famous being Bory Castle.
I'm actually building a recreation of a medieval trebuchet. Will bring it over once yours is done. Lol
Wonder what it's looking like now, pretty awesome!
I hope somebody's making a movie about all this
Great effort.
These people are more talented than the highest renowned architects in the world. Now days people demand meaningless concrete blocks instead of good architecture. Props to these people!
The dedication
This is super cool!!
Incredible!,
Ziemlich spannend😋 war dort mal vor zwei Jahren
Hopefully it will kickstart a revival
c'est fort. une création et non une restoration. Belle initiative.
I imagine they could make a fair amount renting it out to film crews. From what I can see it's a fine restoration.
This is a great project. Small point: no mason uses a lead pencil. All incising was done with nail point.
Man, that looks fun...in a way.
I think a public outreach approach would be ideal here , maybe not the main castle but a recreation of a period farm or village would be awesome , especially if it could be done in a way as to educate those visitors/contributors in construction , and crafting techniques and methods that may otherwise be threatened by obsolescence. A kind of living history museum.
Actually it is like this already. Wasn't there yet (my French est tres horrible but the French refuse to learn English for some really social chauvinist reasons) but a friend who studied archeology. Of course they focus on the castle for now but afterwards they surely won't end it, say goodby and leave. There are some small buildings out of the era and you could see how stuff was made. And they really need it anyways. They have some blacksmith using meadow ore for melting it in primitive ovens and make medieval nails out of it. There is some other stuff as well and some guided tours and entertaining because they need to raise funds.
You can visit the castle, you can even apply to work here for one week or one month. You can see the different people working and explaining their job, their technics. They recieved about 300 000 visitors last year. That's how the construction is founded.
And we don't "refuse to learn English for some really social chauvinist reasons"?! Some people learn english, some people don't, simply because they don't have to speak english in their life, since they are french...
They have a website you can check, and despite being a french site, they have an english version. ;-)
+Delph Zouzou "They don't speak it in their live" - that is kind of an insane statement. Especially if you speak of younger people going to school since around 2000. It is almost impossible to not regularly encounter moments you need English. Even in a tiny village in the Auvergne. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that there are students in the European Union who can go to school without doing at least one foreign language. Most even do two for higher education. Then there is the regulation of how many foreign language songs are allowed in radio, this regulation about sings that are nor in French - they are not allowed - and all that. Cultural chauvinism :(
Oliver Kurzweg
It's not cultural chauvinism, it's cultural protectionnism like they do in USA. Would you prefer that in France all the music is in english and all the movies come from Hollywood? It's important, for us at least, to protect our language, which is part of our culture.
Perhaps you don't care but that's why french cinema is the most alive in Europe and we don't want to be invaded by idiotic american blockbusters, we are totally able to make idiotic movies in french.
If you live in France you most of the time don't have to speak english, especially if you're a teenager, I don't see what is "insane" in that; Everyone learn english at school, it doesn't mean you use it in your life.
It also allows foreign people to learn french, you know, this strange "chauvinist" language people speak in France...
Why should they have to be the ones to learn English when you don't bother to learn basic French when you're the one visiting THEIR country? And I'm willing to bet there are more French people speaking English in France than there are English speaking people at least understanding French in English speaking countries, just because of tourism. But you won't find many of them in tiny villages in Auvergne.
And I wouldn't count on stumbling on French speaking people in the hart of the US or England if I were to go visit either.
I’ll be in my early 40s when this castle is finished being built.
And still be there in 400 years
In Germany they have something like this I think it’s a village that they’re making out of techniques from medieval times but I forget what it’s called does anyone know?
Really great videos, but they need to be a bit longer and in depth. Not everyone is into the ADD aesthetic of the 21st century.
