Building a Medieval Castle in Modern Times

  • It’s hard to fathom how magnificent castles were built centuries ago. One group set out to understand just that by building their own masterpiece two hours outside of Paris. Tucked away in a forest, a team of master builders and archeologists are attempting to construct Guédelon, a castle from the 13th century, using only medieval techniques.

Did you not pause the video at points where they were constructing to see what they were wearing? And they also have some 21st century tools.
However, because they are using 800-year old techniques and not modern techniques, I still think what they're doing is incredibly awesome!

They have special formulas for sudents, usually in construction fields, so you may be lucky. Also, it's actually a concept of experimental archeology. For instance, a few years ago remains of a wooden watermill have been found. A replica has been built in Guedelon, is currently working and much has been learnt from this experiment.

They last far longer than modern buildings because they were built to withhold from attacks in battle... Bravo! Wish i were a part of this :) Good luck and I hope you all get to see it finished every single one of you!

So now there is the "footprints" of a 21st Century castle made with 13th Century technique in Lead Hill, Arkansas (I won't say half built because it was no where near being halfway completed). It was shut down in 2012.

c'est fort. une création et non une restoration. Belle initiative.

I imagine they could make a fair amount renting it out to film crews. From what I can see it's a fine restoration.

This is a great project. Small point: no mason uses a lead pencil. All incising was done with nail point.

I think a public outreach approach would be ideal here , maybe not the main castle but a recreation of a period farm or village would be awesome , especially if it could be done in a way as to educate those visitors/contributors in construction , and crafting techniques and methods that may otherwise be threatened by obsolescence. A kind of living history museum.

Actually it is like this already. Wasn't there yet (my French est tres horrible but the French refuse to learn English for some really social chauvinist reasons) but a friend who studied archeology. Of course they focus on the castle for now but afterwards they surely won't end it, say goodby and leave. There are some small buildings out of the era and you could see how stuff was made. And they really need it anyways. They have some blacksmith using meadow ore for melting it in primitive ovens and make medieval nails out of it. There is some other stuff as well and some guided tours and entertaining because they need to raise funds.

You can visit the castle, you can even apply to work here for one week or one month. You can see the different people working and explaining their job, their technics. They recieved about 300 000 visitors last year. That's how the construction is founded.
And we don't "refuse to learn English for some really social chauvinist reasons"?! Some people learn english, some people don't, simply because they don't have to speak english in their life, since they are french...
They have a website you can check, and despite being a french site, they have an english version. ;-)

+Delph Zouzou "They don't speak it in their live" - that is kind of an insane statement. Especially if you speak of younger people going to school since around 2000. It is almost impossible to not regularly encounter moments you need English. Even in a tiny village in the Auvergne. I just can't wrap my head around the fact that there are students in the European Union who can go to school without doing at least one foreign language. Most even do two for higher education. Then there is the regulation of how many foreign language songs are allowed in radio, this regulation about sings that are nor in French - they are not allowed - and all that. Cultural chauvinism :(

It's not cultural chauvinism, it's cultural protectionnism like they do in USA. Would you prefer that in France all the music is in english and all the movies come from Hollywood? It's important, for us at least, to protect our language, which is part of our culture.
Perhaps you don't care but that's why french cinema is the most alive in Europe and we don't want to be invaded by idiotic american blockbusters, we are totally able to make idiotic movies in french.
If you live in France you most of the time don't have to speak english, especially if you're a teenager, I don't see what is "insane" in that; Everyone learn english at school, it doesn't mean you use it in your life.
It also allows foreign people to learn french, you know, this strange "chauvinist" language people speak in France...

Why should they have to be the ones to learn English when you don't bother to learn basic French when you're the one visiting THEIR country? And I'm willing to bet there are more French people speaking English in France than there are English speaking people at least understanding French in English speaking countries, just because of tourism. But you won't find many of them in tiny villages in Auvergne.
And I wouldn't count on stumbling on French speaking people in the hart of the US or England if I were to go visit either.

Really great videos, but they need to be a bit longer and in depth. Not everyone is into the ADD aesthetic of the 21st century.
