      Yeah, none of the 3 DB tournament arcs is wild. DB may not have created the trope of a tournament arc but it propelled it into the mainstream and set the foundation for all tournament arcs to come after it. Not to mention they are all just really entertaining even if you take out how important they are to the history of shonen anime. You see every match with a wide variety of characters from beginning to end and side characters get to shine in a way DBZ never let them.

    Yu Yu Hakusho's Dark Tournament arc is the best tourament arc arguably ever. I would Make that S tier. Yu Yu Hakusho without that arc is a solid 7/10. With that arc it becomes one of the best shonen anime ever made and is at least 9/10 because that arc slapped harder than my dad.
    Also Fairy Tail's Grand Magic Games arc is one of the best arcs of that anime with a wild ending that I just loved. Also seeing the fallen Fairy Tail guild rise up to being the top guild was just awesome. That arc is a solid A tier.
    I do agree in general though that Naruto's Chunin Exams arc is also S tier, but it still is not as good as the Dark Tournament arc if you ask me.

      @@viyusavery248 I mean you say that but every team match up had their own rules
      First round was specifically a 1v1 for Team Urameshi. 2nd round was a 3v3 battle royale, round 3 is also 1v1 one however is based on the last man standing. So each fighter can take on multiple opponents in round 3 until they are defeated. Round 4 was decided randomly by Dice who would fight, with every defeated fighter creating a free space on the dice. The final round against team Toguro is a 1v1 however both teams agreed to make the match against the captains be worth the most points.
      So, yes while most matches a are 1v1, every round went under different rules.
      Not to mention there were other rounds featuring Team Toguro where we see (Younger) Toguro takes on an entire team himself & (Elder) Toguro kills 3 opponents at once .

      That's kind of why I don't rate it high along with the Hunter Exams & Sports Festival, they end in anti-climaxes. This is good for changing up the pace of the story, however it makes the conclusion of these tournaments a lot less cathartic. That why I think I'm a big fan of the Dark Tournament, Tenkaichi Budokai, & Vongola Ring Tournament from Hitman Reborn. These Tournament telegraph what the final match will be. This may make the story predictable, however it results in making a more satisfying closer due to greater build up.

    Underrated Pick, but my fav tournament Arc is the Autum Selection in Shokugeki no soma, or better known as Food Wars.
    (Besides Naruto, cause that was freaking fire)
    Its a very great Tournament arc to finally show off the abilities and personalities of the side characters.
    Everyone brought something very special to the table, what finally concluded in a well better rounded main protagonist, since he tried to addapt everyones knowledge and skill with his own turn later on.
    Another very big part was that Soma finally had the Chance of showing his true potential in the School, while clashing with other students.
    And in the end, they did the best thing they could have done, made him lose.
    something that was very important for this cocky character, that felt like he already knew everything when he first started.
    Its one of my most fav animes to this date, and i have rewatched soooo many fights from that tornament over the last few years.

    The JJK "tournament" arc really doesn't feel like a tournament at all. That's why I think many people wouldn't consider it in the running. Not only is it missing the very basics of what makes a tournament is devolves insanely quickly into anything but a tournament. For me personally when I think of a tournament arc the first thing that comes to mind is Heaven's Arena from HxH. Not only do we get one of the best fights in the show (Gon vs Hisoka) we get the groundwork for arguably the best power system in fiction being Nen. I don't know if I'd call it my favorite but I think it gets really overlooked with what it sets up for the rest of the show. Without it arcs like Yorknew City/Phantom Troupe and the Chimera Ant Arc wouldn't be argued to be some of the best Shonen arcs ever.

    Hajime no ippo and slam dunk each have s-tier tournament arcs. May be a slightly different genre but sports anime absolutely nailed tournament arcs. My personal favorite shonen tournament arc is the dark tournament. The three kings arc of yu yu hakusho could’ve been even better than the dark tournament if togashi didn’t stop the series but then we probably wouldn’t have gotten hunter x hunter. I felt like the three kings saga had an insane amount of potential to it but it wasn’t written well. I can see why a person would put the chunin exams as the number one tournament arc. It’s written well and it’s iconic and visually spectacular. The fights are great and so much of it is completely unpredictable with all sorts of twists and turns, and tonal shifts. The only thing is, kishimoto got better as the story went on and there were some things I’d have preferred to see in the chunin exams than what we got. Characters who were great in the chunin exams were underutilized throughout the whole series, like neji, rock Lee, dosu, and shino. Some of the heavy hitters who were introduced in the arc, like orochimaru, gaara, and shikamaru, would become main characters at different times of the series. However, even they had a few problems with the way they were utilized in the story. Lamer characters like kankuro, kabuto, and kiba weren’t the best used in the chunin exams and only had a few moments to shine in the series. Character writing is usually a big part of tournament arcs and story arcs in general but still, the whole arc is absolutely gargantuan in terms of its impact and quality compared to other tournament arcs. Some of the greatest scenes in anime like orochimaru’s entrance and fight with team 7, rock Lee vs gaara, and the ending climax of the arc with the hokage and jinchuriki/gamabunta fight is just phenomenal. It feels better than perfect at times.

There was an excellent buildup and storyline for the tournament itself, so why do you feel the need to interrupt it with a high class threat? I didn't like that the Chunin exam got cut short with the raid on Konoha, and I didn't like that the Kyoto goodwill event got interrupted with the Disaster curse raid

    • @freddykrueger8076
      @freddykrueger8076 Před rokem +4

      To interject;
      Both Tourneys by that point accomplished their goals, that being **Character Development**
      The best Tournament Arcs don’t focus on seeing the Tourneys to the final round, but rather giving a fluid & complex series of 1v1s and interpersonal battles which either Develops or Grows characters
      For both series, it was a chance to expound upon their backstories, to build relationships between protags and antags, to further develop the world, their teachers, and the politics surrounding them.
      Its Worldbuilding at its finest (for Tournament Arcs at least)
      The point of these Tournaments isn’t the Tournament itself. That just is the way the story is delivered. The point of these Tournaments… is to build upon the world.
      and these Villain Attacks following the ‘conclusion of the worldbuilding’ is simply to keep the story moving.
      Additionally, although conversely for both stories, the subsequent Attacks show the characterization made manifest.
      The Sound & Sand Villages betray the Heroes, whereas the opposing Sorcerer Schools teamup against their Common Enemy.
      The information that had been built upon for the past 20+ chapters has been finally realized.
      In effect, the Tournament never mattered, it was just a background.

    Dark Tournament and it’s not even a contest. It’s fucking awesome. It does everything a tournament arc should do right. The tournament is rigged against Team Urameshi perfectly and it doesn’t feel cheap when they overcome the odds. Will also say that from a certain point in season one onwards, World Trigger becomes a tournament arc and it’s fucking fantastic. The battles in that show are strategic and so well thought out.

  • @CoryLuLu
    @CoryLuLu Před rokem +2

    Love the channel, but hate the take. I respect your opinion, but vehemently disagree and think you misunderstand the purpose of the tournament arc. I think recency bias plays heavily to Jujutsu Kaisen for you and you simply miss the fact that Jujutsu Kaisen did very little to innovate in the field and simply used proven methods made by the former. But what it couldn't do nearly as well is make loveable characters, friend or foe, in every fight it featured, it couldn't really put a benchmark of skill on the overall cast, nor could it have people at the edge of their seats after every fight.
    YYH simply mastered this and I feel that anyone that has watched all these anime would be ridiculous to put not just 1, but 2 anime in an entire tier above it and have the audacity to put MHA on the same tier (which did NOTHING to innovate on the format), when they know full well that modern anime are standing on the shoulders of giants when doing tournament arcs.
    Naruto also has a lot of respect from me, but my bias would still lean heavily for YYH as top of S
    I've watched Jujutsu Kaisen's tournament arc multiple times already and still have extremely few memorable movement's from it and forgot most of the opponents. And while I love that Jujutsu Kaisen's attempting to iterate on the strengths of the anime before it, while adding a lot of polish to the concepts, I find it has some of the worst character development of the shonen category, which I think is the most critical part for a long running series. I have no endearment to any of the characters that could even compare to characters I endeer from other shonen.
    This is like calling a random DJ a better musician because you like their remix of Requiem in D minor more than Mozart's rendition. Not only are you not giving the work done by the original enough credit, you're overvaluing what was iterated on.
    Additionally, you didn't even include the real innovator of the format from Dragon Ball in the ranking. While I think YYH mastered the format, Dragon Ball laid the foundation.

    To me, I think that you're underselling a lot of YYH's Dark Tournament's character development theoughout the arc. Yusuke is obviously the focus, but Kurama and even Genkai grow quite bit themselves. Add on to that a lot of fun characters with creative abilities and a very effective antagonist and that's an S-tier arc for me.
    I also think that not including a Dragon Ball Tenakichi Budokai is an oversight. I'd go with the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai (Goku vs. Piccolo Jr.), personally. Lots of great character moments capped off with an insanely great fight.

    Can we even call the Chunin Exam a tournament arc? I always thought it more like an Exam Arc, much like the Hunter Exam for HxH. I mean, sure, there is a tournament at the end of the arc, but i'm note sure either this or Jujutsu fit in the category.

  • @cunkfucklyVEVO
    @cunkfucklyVEVO Před rokem

    its been said before but it's wild you didnt include a single dragon ball tournament arc in here
    and just to say something that hasn't been said yet, zatch bell's whole manga is basically a giant tournament arc (though you could also call it a death game series instead), so if we're talking best? idk zatch bell hits some pretty high highs.
    It might be unfair to compare it to other tournament arcs (if you'd even call it one) because the core conceit of the manga is one series-long tournament, so there's a lot more room for character arcs and emotional depth, but it is one of the best!
    and just to include other tournament arcs that i don't think anybody's mentioned before, MÄR and O-Parts Hunter both had some fun ones (but I haven't read them since middle school, so how good they are is up for debate).

  • @code.c.
    @code.c. Před rokem +3

    The Hunter Exam lacks depth, and parts of it are outright boring/bad (phase 2 comes to mind). But I still think it deserves a lot of credit for being such a successful icon. The 2011 adaptation especially manages to use the Exam as an immediate hook that grips viewers' excitement in a way that makes you just want to keep on watching through 30-some admittedly shallow episodes before getting to the meat and bones of some of HxH's more complex storytelling. I think a lot of this stems from Togashi's unpredictable storytelling he employs in HxH, which makes The Hunter Exam a really strong foil to something like his Dark Tournament Arc, for instance.

      What would you consider one of the worst Tournaments in Anime out of Curiosity.
      One's I can think of are
      The Demon World Tournament in Yu Yu Hakusho, it sort of ended in an Anti-climax because Togashi was burnt out. Though it is honestly more so just disappointing than bad in all honesty. There were some good fights however a good percentage of the fights going on in the tournament are just not shown at all. In general I thought the Rest of 3 Kings Arc was pretty good, the tournament at the end just felt anti-climatic.
      The 25th Budokai Tenkaichi doesn't have much going for it due to the Buu conflict interrupting it. Though it wasn't really even a Tournament Arc rather just a small part of the Buu Saga.
      Naruto Shippuden gave us A Filler Arc for The New Chunin Exams which was pretty lack luster. Too much time was spent of the 2nd phase and the 3rd phase didn't even happen.

    I'd argue that the entire Chunin Exam Arc isn't a true tournament arc. The second stage (Forest of Death) isn't a tournament. It's more of an objective-based battle royal, and shouldn't be considered when lying on the best tournament arc. Only the preliminaries and third stage are actual tournaments. I'd also make the same argument for HxH's Hunter Exam (only the final stage is actually a tournament, the previous stage is also an objective-based battle royal). JJK's Exchange Event is an objective-based team battle. Not a true tournament. Lastly, the Dragon Ball franchise has true tournaments and should be represented.

    Honestly, I really like the Tournament Arcs of Naruto and MHA because of how it connects to the worldbuilding of their respective series. They don't feel cot river but instead a natural part of the world and a next necessary step in the characters' goals. The Tournament Arc of MHA is just a notch better in my opinion because it learns from its predecessors like Naruto and adds to them, by having the Sports Festival act as the perfect stage for the Hero Students to show off their stuff in order to attract the attention and internships of Hero Agencies.

JJK had a really fun fight, but that is not a tournament, it takes more than a school brawl before a terrorist attack to make a tournament arc.

    • @upg5147
      @upg5147 Před rokem

      I think you have to also add that tournament arcs gave "rules". The Ninja War and Chimera Ants arc are just free for all fights, there are no "out of bounds" or "disqualifications", that's where things really change.

    • @Pimp.My.Forklift
      @Pimp.My.Forklift Před rokem +1

      @@upg5147 well, I'd say Basilisk is a tournament arc, but there are no rules beyond, death means losing. In that way it's no different to any actual war, where the dead soldiers are disqualified from continuing to play. I think structure and intent are more important than rules for a tournament. I think JJK lacked any real structure, it was a friendly competition, sure, but it had no structure to competion beyond chucking a bunch of teenagers at eachother in the hopes that Itadori would somehow die. It also lacked the intent for a tournament, the story had no interest in actually exploring how the characters would face different oponents, each character basically got a single real fight and for most of them didn't even require the competition to happen, because they were long standing feuds.

    I’d definitely say that MHA had the worst execution of a tournament arc. It felt like nothing much really progressed. You could easily replace it with any other type of story devices for character progression(like the attacks on the camp and training grounds), even do it better. The fact that even the match ups felt short and stretched out at the same time is sad. Also gonna mald at the fact that they hyped up Momo to be a genius like Todoroki, showed her initiative and genius in one arc, but made her stupid in the tournament which then leaked into the next arc. Such a contrived problem when she’s showed easily how she gets around it, simply producing smaller tools. Really the only thing worthy of note is the Uraka and Bakugo fight and I guess Todoroki and Deku fight, even though you could also make an easy story replacement with Deku encouraging Todoroki to use his flame powers because he can’t save everyone like a true hero without using both powers. Maybe if Deku’s powers weren’t as simple back then it’d be valid enough but watching two characters shoot essentially cannons at each other was so boring despite the quality animation.
    The whole purpose of the Chunin Exams was not only narrative and cool fights but dynamic world building. Its peak because in the background we can slowly see tensions are still there between the villages while also the core antagonist at the time slowly creep in and take advantage of those fragile openings in the event. It also actually had good story progressions of a lot of side characters which would end up bearing fruit in the following arc.
    I can’t comment off Jujutsu Kaisen but if it can respect a characters progression while being valid as a story tool then its at least a solid execution. Also yea, pluses for being a shonen anime that gives 2 shingles about its female characters.

    • @ThePurpleKnightmare
      @ThePurpleKnightmare Před rokem +1

      The tournament arc of MHA is great because of the stakes. The race is so exciting when Deku comes in first, but then it becomes tense when he is suddenly worth the most amount of points. Then in the final part of it he throws away his chance at victory to help someone else's sake, even though it was super important for him to say "I am here" and it should have been a very bitter end when you see Bakugo beat Todoroki, but seeing him rage about how he didn't earn it makes it really funny and helps the viewer not be so glum about the failure.
      From a perspective of random 1v1s it is pretty lame, but it's significance to the story is what makes it so great. The results of that tournament still affect a shit ton of things in the story in every season since. Some anime have a single event that is super important like Fuyuki being in flames in F/SN or the nine tails attack on the leaf in Naruto (Even though Naruto has a few events like this) but some anime don't have things like that. MHA is an anime that doesn't have anything like that, but if you had to pick an event to take that position. It's the sports festival. It has such a big impact on the future of the series compared to any other event in the series.
