It is not healthy, by no means, but Aqua is clearly not leaving that path no matter what he says, so his options were to either let him take a slow burn path or a painful but quicker way to achieve his goals. If you think in a practical sense, at the end of the day "not getting involved" is pretty much choosing to let him just pick the slow burn path, and that is also making a choice, on the director's part.
