After 7 years i finally see this video again
in all honesty a backhoe is a jack of all trades master of none where I work they only used backhoes but as soon as we got the mini and now the skid steer the backhoe is rarely used
Took a skidsteer and mini ex to replace a backhoe. And the cost of a mini ex and skidsteer? And you still cant take either of them down the highway like you can a hoe. For the money...I would keep the hoe. And still do any job that needs done.

The excavator is better at digging if there are cables and pipes in the ground because you have mutch better view of what you are doing. And if you have a rotortilt you can just put the pallet forks on that, same thing goes for the sweeping attachment. Plus the backhoe is a JCB so it would be broken half the time that the excavator is working

Backhoe is equivalent to about an 8 tonner so an 8 tonne excavator should have been used. A more experienced excavator operator should have been used to trench and backfill. A set of excavator forks should have been used to unload. A wheel excavator should have been used for speed. Loading trucks is definitely quicker with an excavator you dig from your side and load over back of truck for fastest load time with a mud bucket.

My JCB
There is so much disinformation in this video:
1. You should use machines with the same digging power. An excavator indeed has to be heavier than a backhoe to have the same "bucket power". BUT tracks have much less ground pressure than wheels so an excavator can keep going on muddy ground a lot better than a backhoe, even if it's heavier. And most of the weight of a backhoe is on its rear axle, which doesn't exactly help either.
2. And of course an open area - what if the working area is cramped. If you need to have the machine between the hole you're digging and the dump truck you load the stuff on. It isn't even possible with a backhoe!
3. When you need to move a backhoe you either need to turn around the seat forth and back or push the backhoe with the bucket in the ground. In both ways you can't dig when you move it. In an excavator you can use more of your time on the actual work.
4 The view and working environment. In a backhoe you have the digging arm directly in front of your eyes. In excavators (except for mini excavators) you have a clear view of the bucket all the time without any need to move yourself.

@@mithung1058 I see, that's a good point. But this is only about the "digging power". This video is an ad for JCB backhoes, so of course they only tell the benefits of it. I wanted to give this a wider perspective. This video shows an optimal open working area for a backhoe where it definitely wins. - But the area isn't always this open and the ground isn't always this stable either.
But if you need to move the machine a lot around between different small workplaces, even more than one a day, for example in a town, the backhoe is indeed more practical.

Like the video, and good PR, but in reality, this isn't fair (for those unfamiliar with both). The excavator comes into its own with jobs where range of motion exceeds 180-degrees, and where you have to both 'break' and 'move' simultaneously (with the excavator, you have to break, pile and then relocate to move the material, while with an excavator, you simply break). In most class-comparisons, the excavator has greater reach, greater down-pressure, and really, the weight-class was seriously low on this comparison, to the favor of the backhoe (less down-force for the excavator). Trenching tends to actually favor the excavator, but 'back fill' will normally favor the backhoe a little. Might want to look up what a Volvo EC221 excavator can do - several videos showing 2-minute load times for 22-ton dump trucks are all over the place. In the end, both backhoe and excavator serve a purpose, you can't drive nails with a screwdriver and you can't tighten screws with a hammer.

i think the Excavator has way more power in his arm. the Backhoe prob wont do for much more then lose earth digging.

Horses for courses. A 360 would obviously not compete in the sweeping. A good op can do almost anything with a backhoe, but that Takeuchi was also not matched to the correct attachments to do those tasks efficiently. The use of these machines depends entirely on what the application is, so its never going to be a fair fight.

Ouch that was bad. On the flat and level ground if they were realy matched in capacity it should have been very even. It wasn't so they were not matched. And loading a truck, who would thought a scoop would have an advantage over a little bitty bucket. How does the backhoe compare loading a truck on a narrow job site when you need to turn arround to back load a truck? A comparison is a good idea but do it right.

I operated a jcb 8085 for year which was a great machine but swapped it for a 3cx a few years back best decision I have made much better machine much more versatile.

Lets see it in a more realistic environment, up the the doors in slurry, which is all to common on UK building sites, the 360 with a ditching bucket on while loading the lorry, and a set of pallet forks on the quick hitch for the unloading. 3CX's are good for motorway resurfacing and the odd bit here and there, but their too heavy and get stuck everywhere because of it. There is always a tele handler on sites too! The levers are arse from elbow as well, unless for most young folk who have learned off a 360, then its a JCB....junk at best!
This is all well and good, but how many real life sites are a massive flat open area with perfectly dry firm ground no mud or obstacles like buildings tight corners walls etc.?

Ikr i watched this when i was only 4
THe front end loader on a backhoe can move SIGNIFICANT amounts more dirt per unit of time over a much farther distance than an excavator. Also Excavators are not really truck loading machines until you get into the Quarry size machines. That is why major construction projects use Wheel Loaders for loading trucks. Excavators dig holes and wheel loaders/backhoes fill trucks.
