The concept of an evil justice league has basically become a trope in dc lore, but which story handled the concept better? There's the edgy and mean spirited Injustice and the more tame but still unsettling Justice Lords. This video is or about which story handled an evil Superman better. The Justice League are included because there actions are directly affected by Superman’s motivations since he’s basically the most important member.

I feel the big difference between the Justice Lord Superman and Injustice version is that Justice Lord Superman seem to be more accepting of his role as tyrant. He knows that he's doing wrong but doesn't care anymore. As he said to Lex, he's already done at being hero.
Injustice Superman is more delusional, refusing to accept that he became corrupt, choosing instead to blame others and and lash out on them. Despite claiming to have good intentions for the world, in reality Injustice Superman is just driven by fear and his inability to deal with loss and failures.

I feel like most people would have had gone superman's route in injustice if they had power and experienced what the Joker did to him. Sure becoming a full born tyrant is a step to far, but snapping after something like that isn't too far outside the realm of reason. As Joker said: "All it takes is one bad day."
@@rustyshackleford5288 Not quite, since in the same story, Joker tried to prove his "one bad day" ideology with Jim Gordon and in the end, even after Joker shot his daughter and tortured him, Jim didn't went insane. Joker plot failed. As Batman pointed out trauma doesn't break a person. It's how the person choose to handle. Heroes like Batman and Spider Man had "one bad day" and choose to handle by helping others. Even Superman, in many version had his "bad day" (ex: Jonathan Kent's death) and still choose to be hero.
Injustice Superman sadly choose othe opposite path: to be paranoid and deluded, refusing to accept his flaws (namely his inability to handle his guilt and anger) and instead blaming others for his problems and lash out.
@@alexandrefrauches132 I always believed Jim got through it because of his iron will, but most people in our society snap for way less things, at least compared to what Joker did to Superman. Unfortunately the only way we could test this is to completely shatter a person's life. Also, I totally agree that he went down the wrong path and rightful deserved his punishment, I'm just saying that the circumstances in which he got to that point were absolutely horrific and I while I oppose what he did, the response is at the very least should have been expected and compared to human atrocities over the course of history, this was at least an understandable conclusion to him losing his way. If I went through what injustice Superman went through, I can't say for certain that I wouldn't snap either.

I think it's because the Ventriloquist is the victim of that relationship while scar face is the main issue.

It's actually rather Ingenius, if silly. The issue with the Ventriloquist is that he believes that Scarface is alive, and Scarface is the real problem in the equation. Sure, you could "kill him", but it's happened before, and the Scarface personality came back. But "lobotomizing" Scarface removes the issue with as little harm to what is otherwise a harmless man. Probably by Batmans request too.
It is still kind of silly though.
What I love about that is that it brings up so many interestingly stupid questions such as who's decision was it to do that

I always wanted to see the original dcau Justice Lord Superman interact with Regime Superman. While they are similar to each other I wonder how Justice Lord supes would react to the more messed up stuff Regime Superman has done like killing Shazam, breaking Superboy’s sternum, getting Zsasz to kill Alfred, brainwashing Batman in the Injustice 2 bad ending then using his tech and proceeding to use said tech to threaten Kara and do all of the stuff that he does in the He-Man crossover comic (the crossover takes place after the bad ending of Injustice 2 btw)
Lord Superman would probably see Injustice Superman as "the evil one" and take him down.

Cause while Dcau Superman has gotten stronger due to the events of Justice League vs the Fatal Five and Infinity Lord Superman obviously never shown that kind of power due to how long ago he appeared in Justice League. Regime Superman on the other hand killed Mogo by ramming one of the guardians into him, and if you count the bad ending of Injustice 2 merged with Brainiac’s tech, brainwashed Batman and proceeds to do all of the stuff he does in the He-Man crossover (which yes does take place after the bad ending)

I like the Justice Lord Superman as Misguided than, the Injustice Superman as a Tyrant.
When you really look at it, Justice Lord Superman is MUCH more of a Tryant than Injustice Superman. From what we can see, life sucks in Injustice but it doesn't seem like you'd be arrested for causing a fuss. Justice Lord superman also has no-one standing against him. I think Injustice Superman just feels like more of a Tyrant because we get to see more of the darker behind the scenes than we do with Justice Lord Supes.
Edit: Also the Justice Lord story is taking place 2 years post catalyst, whereas the main story for Injustice takes place in year 5. Took a lot longer to fall to where he is for Injustice than for Justice Lord

I prefer justice lords for another reason, not only is it plausable, but the main universe was a on a collision course with that future and jlu made it one if the most crucial pieces to the cadmus arc. And supes being an older man, getting tired of the grind and losing some of his good hearted nature and spirit was excelent to watch. It git so bad batman said he missed when clark was kinder and happier and that just hit home. It became a world where batman and superman met in the middle of ideals and personal growth. I relate much more with a character who just got tired of seeing evil in every corner and fighting an uphill battle rather than just crashing out. Would stas superman go evil if lois died? Its possible but its more likely that after years of heroism bearing no fruit he would just go "fuck it, Im in charge now, stop killing or else."
To answer your question of "Would STAS Superman go evil if Lois died", the question is actually answered in STAS. There's an episode where Lois gets sent to an alternate timeline where Lois dies and it makes Superman take over. It's been a while since I've seen it so I do think there's a bit more nuance like Lex manipulating him, but yeah, he takes over.
When I was younger and first saw the Justice Lords episode, I had no idea why the villains were so passive, watching this made me realize Superman lobotomized them.

I feel like their motivations would be better swapped. A man loses his wife and unborn child and then sets up a misguided police state with the goal of preventing crime from ever hurting anyone again. And a man who realizes he doesn’t save people to be a hero, but for the recognition he receives from it sets up an authoritarian hellscape of a world where he’d kill his own former friends and allies if they go against him
I’ve thought of that before but a true grief throwing injustice Superman over the edge vs lord Superman realizing the fact that he has to police the world in order to protect it even if it means killing does make sense. Lord Superman isn’t thrown over the edge by killing his wife, unborn child, and all of metropolis. That pain and wrathful side of Superman wasn’t exposed he is efficient cold and calculating compared to injustice Superman especially how they rule and act.
On Earth 50 Justice Lords Wally was murdered by Lex Luthor which made them all go bad

I don't understand why that when in justice lord Batman so easily corporates with Superman over losing one teammate but didn't do that when his friends family along with his city died by his enemy
One interesting thing about the Justice Lord verse is that Batman was the first to justify and side with Superman for killing Luthor. I'm guessing some past events had already pushed him to the edge.
I mean in the Justice Lords universe, Luthor killed Wally West. Probably a few other people too.

Justice Lord is definitely better. Too bad people will either conviently forget that this exists whenever they say that hate evil Superman or they'll praise it, but forget that they hate evil versions of Superman.
I don't mind an evil version of Superman and I enjoyed those 2 episodes of the Justice Lords also.
An elseworld is whatever. The place most people have a problem is when the canonical Superman is portrayed as that weak a man.
Really? I think Justice Lord is significantly worse. It's fine for a quick little story but it makes absolutely no sense that one day Superman would just decide to take over because stuff gets a little more tough than usual. In Injustice it takes an absolutely horrific event to break Superman. It also makes no sense that everyone would stand with Superman, esspecially Batman. And everything takes place over 2 years, it at least takes 5 years for the world of Injustice to get how it is.
Injustice has more nuance, is truer to the characters and just as a plot makes way more sense. That's not to say it's perfect, you could even argue it sucks, but it's significantly better than Justice Lords. As I said, Justice Lords is fine for a fun little story but it doesn't go any deeper than that. I think people just say Justice Lords is better because it comes from a generally great show so they kinda go blind to this story's issues.
@@TommFoolery People probably do say it for that reason, but I genuinely do not care. It doesn't matter to me at all about whether it took 2 or 5 years for the justice league to take over because it's the justice league. Injustice supes killing Joker was always about Lois and nothing more.
The only reason that everyone standing with Superman wouldn't make sense is because we didn't spend enough time exploring that, but we are still shown that some members had doubts or could be convinced to change course (Batman and hawkgirl).
At the end of the day, both stories work (or at least somewhat work) on their versions of these characters. They are only "true to the characters" based on what the dcau (as a whole) and the injustice comics/games have established their characters to be.
They were also universe 50 of the 52 multiverses before the concept of the omniverse was introduced.
You forgot to mention DCAU Superman has had a taste of authoritarian power, through Darkseid
The thing that scares me isn't the justice lords or superman's regime in injustice. It's the people who think that both of those are somehow the good guys or justified and claim that they have the right idea but are just misguided. Rebelling against those authorities is the right thing to do, but it's wrong to tear them down just so society can be returned to a status quo that allowed those regimes to rise in the first place.

This is the one thing in unlimited that put me on edge, because Cadmus and the Government was paying attention to the wrong things, like most people. Waller thought that it was Luthor as president that made the difference, no one even batted an eye at the flash and thought that His Death was the reason.
Wally is the one person on the team that actually cares about his Friends, his Rogues, basically everybody connected to him he gives a shit about on some level, and to have him dead, that leaves a massive hole in many hearts.

I think you'd need a much longer video to fully analyze why Justice Lords work better. The biggest problem to me other than its depiction of Wonder Woman being ride or die for Clark is that Superman becomes so unhinged and evil that grief alone is not an adequate explanation. The only way I can make sense of him is that the kryptonite-fear gas that the Joker used to make him hallucinate Doomsday caused actual brain damage.
The most recent version of the Crime Syndicate in comics are more of a middle ground between anti-hero and villan than outright evil although they lean more towards villan

The difference between Justice Lords and Regime was there was no 'civil war' also Justice Lords were more lenient with their control unlike Regime's 'kill first than ask' approach though we only briefly saw Justice Lords version and that version reminds me the DarkWing Duck's future regime more which might be the inspiration for the episode.
There's also the fact that the Justice Lord accept their roles as "villains" and don't seem mind that people are unhappy with their actions, while the Regime, in particular Injustice Superman, are far more deluded and uncapable of handling the reality, as show by the fact that, when Clark discovered that people of Metropolis were afraid of him, his response was to try to destroy the city and "make it a exemple". He claims he want to make a "better world for the people" but in reality he's only thinking in ways to escape criticisim and not have to face the harsh truth: That he's not perfect and is able to fail in life... just like when he failed to save Lois and his city.
Injustice (film) is different from Injustice (game/comics) as in the movie Superman is still with grief and Wonder Woman is supporting him only until a point, while in the games/comics WW is a villain and Superman goes crazy.
I kind of liked that change tbh. Wonder Woman turning on Superman in the end was pretty well written, as although she agreed with ending suffering in the world there was a clear limit to what she was willing to do.

Yes Joker is clearly insane, however he is dangerously insane and Arkham has repeated failed to not only cure him but kept in locked up. this outcome would be inevitable.
One of the few things the Injustice film did right was making Wonder Woman have more complexity than evil cardboard.
I always felt that the Justice Lords' slide to evil felt more believable. What they did, in their head, was in service to the people. They thought that their method was the only way to keep everyone safe. Sticking to your values, but slowly warpping and twisting them makes for a very human fall from grace.

Right. Batman follows and enforces his own laws. And because his identity is hidden, there's no threat of anyone coming to hold him accountable.
What made Injustice Superman a tragic character was that he was effectively taught the hard way that being too high-profile and having a loved one don't mix so well. He's forced into the world Batman lives in. The Regime is simply constructed as a denial to the reality of being a superhero. He recreated Metropolis the way he could, and turned the rest of the world into the same kind of Metropolis, in the hopes that he doesn't have to see the world Batman does. But it never quite worked out. Metropolis under his governance is dark and brutal, like Gotham. It's still corrupting him slowly but still to the point that whatever good thing he's trying to do translates to horrifying results.
It really ironic how IJ Superman hate for Batman and yet embraces all of Batman's worst aspects, like his need for control, his brooding, the use of fear and the way he handle trauma by pushing his loved ones away... except, in the case of Superman, he shows the extreme of this negative aspects.
Justice Lord Superman is better. His League started out trying to do good but turned controlling. Regime Superman was a psycho using Lois and his unborn son's deaths to justify horrible things.
It's the difference between being motivated by insane grief to do bad things and being motivated by what motivated you to do good...
One is just more believable than the other and isn't a complete character assassination for the sake of a dark twist.
I love Justice Lords, but people don’t give enough credit to the Gruenwald Squadron Supreme series. Still Bronze Age, but a great take on why the Justice League should never set themselves up as dictators even with the best intentions.
Love that comic, its awesome and made me love what is literally Marvel's fake Justice League so they can have the Avengers meet up with them while avoiding legal issues.
Personally I think Injustice Superman should have done a combo of The Justice Lords and Superman Red Son, a combination of lobotomy and technological mind control, so the villain gets to "live" but they'll never possess the ability to even think of committing crime.
Like imagine if instead of killing Joker he think killing him would be both pointless and too good for him, so he takes him to his fortress, and by the time Batman gets to him he finds Joker, who has been lobotomised and had technology implanted into his head, rendering him little more then a robot capable of only doing the most basic of things.
Batman gets to come face to face with something that is probably worse then if Superman had just killed Joker.

Justice Lord Superman had a little bit of 'Homelander' in him, in that he enjoyed the appreciation of the masses more than the actual act of doing good deeds (which he still liked doing, unlike Homelander who could care less)
Actually this would be Injustice Superman. Justice Lord Superman doesn't care at all if people see him as hero or not. As he said to Lex, he was done in seeking people gratitude for his heroics.
Injustice Superman is more unstable. Because of the guilty he feels for Lois death, he refuses to take responsability for his actions and acknowloge his mistakes, and instead he resorts to denial and delusion. When something goes wrong and people criticize him, Injustice Superman response is to lash out.

It would be interesting to see a Justice Lord style story where the Lords don’t go off the deep end; where they manage to control those dark impulses and reject them because that’s not who they are. It could explore people have different opinions on what they think is *too* far by having characters express approval or discontent with others’ body counts, but still agreeing with the ideals enough to be on the same side. There’s just tension.
You could have the twist being Lord Batman is the one that goes off the deep end, as his trauma and desire for control consumes him, while Lord Superman moves away from his authoritarian path, remembering who he was and what he represented. Rather than go with the old "Batman good, Superman bad" sthick.
In the show when they go to Arkham Asylum everyone has these scars on their head indicating that everyone was lobotomized. You can see in the clip at 6:35.
Injustice almost certainly was heavily influenced by the DCAU. Injustice Superman's DNA is part Justice Lord Superman, who had his roots from Brave New Metropolis.
Also, Bruce Timm and company went back to the EVIL SUPERMAN! route at least four times, including these two stories, "Legacy" Superman who was brainwashed by Darkseid, and Future Superman who was possessed by Starro. This is a black eye on the DCAU that they kept relying on this storytelling tactic for the Man of Steel.
For long time Superman fans, these stories are sad chapters in the franchise's history. We got stories like "Red Son" or "Superman: The Darkseid" where Superman could be raised by some of the worst souls ever, but eventually he'd find the right path. These two stories insist that all it takes for Superman to go unhinged was one bad day, making him something like the opposite of the Joker. This version of Superman is basically only a hero if his life goes well and has no way to cope with tragedy. It's character assassination, especially when juxtaposed by Injustice and Justice Lord Batmen who both end up on the side of good.
I think of this as how Lex Luther sees Superman normally lol

One thing I'd like to point out about the Justice Lords. Diana, or Shay'Ira, I can't remember which, points out that the main League "Call themselves the Justice League" which to me, unless it was just interpretation, it implies the Justice Lords have ALWAYS been called the Justice Lords.
I mean... I woulda really dug Suicide Squad if we were fighting the Justice Lords instead of the Brainiac League.
Unrelated kind of, but my favorite super hero teams ever are the X-men, Justice League, and the Avengers.

This is my summary of the two characters.
Justice Lord Superman reminds me of Tamer000 in the "1000 Players Simulate Civilization on Survival Islands" from Marcusk in terms of charisma, ambition, authority and good will.
Changing it up a bit I like it :)

I always said to others that justice lords > Injustice.
Justice Lord's Superman makes a choice. Injustice Superman was forced evil by the story. Any story where it's a choice is always better, just look at Superman vs The Elite where it seems like his going bad is a choice and that makes it so that you get the notion that his hero persona is a choice as well, and that's far more interesting than it is forced.

The Justice Lords universe is in fact a PARALLEL universe, meaning it's not just the Justice League that suddenly fell over the edge.
The Justice League Kingdom Come deconstruction is also done extremely well. I find the character growth/ideas there is far more interesting than Injustice.
To be fair part of the difference is WHY they hit their respective breaking points
I always thought that Justice Lord Superman was scarier since he managed to keep the rest of the heroes and the majority of the public on his side. Having Batman, specifically, on his side is impressive given that narratively, he is usually the one to resist Supes or other super-powered characters in these situations. He was able to do this with 2 main actions I think:
1. When he killed Lex it wasn’t due to purely vengeful intent. While killing Flash was the main reason that the Lords were confronting him that day, Luthor also had his hand hovering over the “big red button”, fully prepared to kickstart World War 3 just to spite Superman, so killing Luthor actually prevented a major tragedy (unlike Injustice, where killing Joker was just purely for vengeance and personal satisfaction).
2. Outside of Luthor, it doesn’t seem like the Justice Lords ever actually killed any of their villains. The reason that all of Batman’s rogues seen so quiet, well-behaved, and compliant in Arkham is because they were all lobotomized like Doomsday (you can tell from the 2 dark dots on their foreheads fromSuperman’s heat vision). While lobotomy via heat vision is definitely an extreme response, it was probably more acceptable to most of the other heroes than straight up killing.
Unlike Injustice, the Lords practiced a kind of soft authoritarianism. They still kept most of the institutions in place while keeping up the illusion of democracy and freedom with the promise that things would go back to normal once things settled back down. Even the Lords themselves questioned what they were doing but were always able to convince themselves and each other that what they were doing was for the greater good. Looking back, I’m starting to realize that this was probably a subtle critique on how the US responded to 9/11. Increased civilian monitoring, harsher punishments for “terrorism” related crimes, and laxer enforcement of due process, but most Americans didn’t fight against these changes because they felt that these were done to protect them.
The Justice Lords were scarier and done better because of how real they felt and how easily our heroes could have followed their path. We (the audience) didn’t even realize that we weren’t following “our” actual heroes until Justice Lord Batman told us about 10 minutes into the episode.
Injustice series must be about Harley crap, because she was the only one who did not pay for what she did.
I genuinely love the justice lords and injustices storylines, I know people have their criticisms on evil versions of beloved characters. But i think their great stories to tell every now and then.

Injustice Superman’s corruption was not immediate, it came over the course of a year or so in failing to grieve with what he did, but also not getting support from the people he needed the most.
Instead, the people he trusted Kidnapped his parents and weaponized them against him, along with coddling villains who grew more unhinged after Metropolis got nuked.

Its a about time that justice league in mainstream Prime Earth to make that step. Pagan gods from many mythos stepped in and take the law in their own hands. The league are analogs of different mythology gods mainly greek,Roman, Egyptian etc. At least Hawkman use lethal force

I think you've forgotten another world-conqurering Superman from the same series as the Justice Lords; a Brave New Metropolis, who didn't even realize that people were suffering under his regime. Now that is a misguided Superman. I would argue that Justice Lord Superman and Injustice Superman would get along scarily well. Broke their code and killed to avenge someone important to them? Check. Became addicted to their own power? Check. Overode the Justice League's morals and turned them all into monsters? Check? The only difference between them is that one couldn't convince his Batmam to join him in the first place.

I was waiting for them to do some adaptation of the Justice Lords 2 parter from Justice League animated series in live action, but that never happened. The DCEU was such a waste of time

justice lords were scarier, I would had loved to see that universe, like Who opposed them, like Green Arrow or Captain Marvel or the teen titans and supergirl, they couldn't have all signed up with them
Honestly, I'd like to have seen more done with the Justice Lords. I'd like to get into the head of Justice Lord Batman in particular. Like, is he actually closer, mentally, to main Batman? Also, Justice Lord Superman was more interesting to me than Injustice Superman.

The slippery slope trope whereby heroes compromising their morality once with good intentions inevitably leads to them going full-on tyrants and oppressing the innocent always comes across to me as rather contrived, tbh. The real world is much more morally grey than this.
Justice Lords honestly are a more believable evil Superman. Superman Labotomizing his enemies is a fantastic work around to not killing.
Heroes aren't supposed to have redemption archs, that's the role of the villian, that's what makes the hero interesting.
The Hero faces the toughest decision, and their answer to that is what makes them a hero. How do I not kill this person who took so much from so many.
It could be Joker with his gas, or Luther with his plots, the point is the downfall of the hero began when villian's stopped convincingly flirting with redemption. They became 1 dimensional and that diminished the hero.
That diminishing resulted in these bizarre tropes of evil heroes which is a very clear absurdity... at best it's head cannon, and at worst delusion.
the thing I never like about theses stories is that their can never be a middle ground either your an authoritarian dictator or your letting you villains live to kill the innocent theirs not a single adherence to escalation or actual law

If Batman killed Joker before Superman was able to do it Regime Superman would never happened. So Regime Superman is result of Batman inability to predict the most basic human emotions. On other hand... Justice Lord came to existance because he was supported by Batman... Unlike Regime Superman, Justice Lord had a lot of morality chains that would put him in check in that reality... So in both cases Evil Superman is the result of Batman's miscalculations (or cowardice).

Joker is insane so it is hard for the goverment to execute him. Of course that kind act like in Injustice would still put him into death row. The problem is that goverment need to follow procedures while Batman need to just put his mind into it.

I haven’t read or seen any story with him so i’m pretty uneducated about the character.
I prefer "evil" Justice League. Both evil and vanilla JLA have writing inconsistencies, typical DC, but at least evil JLA isn't perpetually chasing its tail. Vanilla JLA is essentially an independent international militia that takes the law into its own hands. The only reason the authorities have not stopped them is because the JLA has the combined fighting force of a nuclear superpower.

Even Justice Lord Superman isn't that interesting. He falls into mustache-twirling territory when he bans protest and all forms of civil unrest. Why, because he killed Luthor and felt good about it, and so he decided to be a dictator?
Give me Gods and Monsters Superman. He plays by his own rules, but still has a moral code. He doesn't need to conquer, but he won't bend to the will of others. Throughout the most part, he wants to do good. It's a far more nuanced take than Justice Lord Superman, and not a comically bad character like Injustice.
All of the Justice Lords went bad after the Flash( Wally) was killed by Lex Luthor
Not only do the Justice Lords work better narratively but they also look cooler, their designs took everything that made the JL iconic and twisted them in the same way a fascist would change the flag of their once great nation.
