The Hunter Connection really was a nasty grimey little arcade however what is undeniable is that it was the best and cheapest place to go in that part of town for a quick lunch. RIP HC.
Only if you new Sydney in the 80s n even the 90s it was still a great city but sadly nothing much like today, it truly saddens me now wat Sydney has become n that sydney vib has long gone now at least by 2 decades. yes once the Olympics came to town n the 2000s came rolling in it really started to change for the worse ..
The Grass is greener on the other side... However I do think that people these days are too obsessed with the next material item that brings short enjoyment rather than being content with what they have and enjoying the company of others like in the good old days, whatever the good old days are to you
I don't know if you've seen the book By Muscle of Man & Horse, by Bill Phippen, and published by the Australian Railway Historical Society. It describes in detail the huge disruption to the city that occurred during what I guess was the last great period of railway construction under the city from 1916 to 1932. For all the new changes, the Metro project is far less disruptive thanks to 100 years of building progress, I would guess.
All the hoardings have vintage photos from the City of Sydney Archives - they have an amazing collection that you can search online, covering Sydney from the 19th century to today.
Good stuff. To be honest I was never a huge fan of the Connection. Last time I recall being in there, the food court seemed really dingy. I do remember ducking in there in a terrific electrical storm once though!
It's a bit of a shame because the link from Wynyard to Hunter Connection hadn't been re-opened for all that long before Hunter Connection was closed. But you're right about it being a step back in time. It really was a time capsule and hadn't been updated in a long time, if ever. It also had lots of steps and sub-levels so terrible for accessibility. The newer section to Pitt St is still open, by the way, as it was a different building. The back is, of course, closed off, so it's now a single-ended indoor mall. You probably did a video of it but I still low-key mourn the loss of Wynyard Ramp and its unique character. But the new entrance can cater for a *lot* more commuters entering or exiting the station, which is why they did it, similar to what's been done on the Town Hall concourse over the last few decades.
Sydney is not a beautiful place now. It gets uglier by the day. Hundreds of beautiful buildings have been destroyed and with them the shops, pubs, theatres and life that used to be in the city.
I disagree. There have been plenty of really good new developments in the CBD over the last 20 years that have improved things mightily. Remember how seedy and run down the half of the CBD from Park Street down to Central used to be. Now it has been revitalised. I’ve been working in the CBD for 40 years and never has it been as good as it is now.
Was there a bar in the Hunter Connection? I seem to recall a bar being there back in the early 80s, when I worked on the 40th floor of the Australia Square Tower building.
I think there were quite a few bars over the years. The only one that I remember is the 747 bar - decked out like the interior of, possibly a 747? I never flew on a 747. Certainly a commercial passenger jet of some sort though.
@@daveg2104 That’s the one I was thinking of, or the Jungle Bar. but wasn’t sure if they were in the Hunter. Man, I spent quite a few nights there after work. Great times. I was such an innocent young lad in the 80s.
@@just_passing_through When Phil went down the escalators to the blocked off passage, I'm sure the 747 Bar was just down there on the left. It was a long time ago though.
the underground passages would restore in future to allow interchange between the Metro and Wynyard station? Also would Hunter St station have underground passage to connect to Martin Place?
Hi, just want to say I've been watching your videos for awhile now after stumbling on a video of yours a year ago I love you videos I find them very entertaining. I'm just wondering I recently caught a bus from Hornsby to Thornleigh Bunnings and seen two of your QR Code stickers on two sign post there and I'm just wondering if there's something you've filmed there?
Hi there! :) Cheers for your support! Oh yes i remember putting those there a while ago. There wasn’t anything in the vicinity at the time. I was just putting the stickers around to try grow the channel :)
Very, very sad. Sydney Australia will never be the same. Every time I look at all the big buildings, I think of all those scoundrels that messed Australia up. Let's face it how can a person make that kind of bucks from the 9 to 5 job. Sorry Sydney, you should never have been involved in any wars . Never been your business. What goes up must come down . Thank you for this time-consuming video. Appreciate you.
Should I point out the irony of a man who, based on his screen name and accent is an obvious immigrant (or the descendent of one), complaining about immigration? I like immigrants who *don't* complain about the country that accepted them. Pull your head in mate. You're welcome to return home at any time.

Good stuff Phil. Great to see the old photos of Sydney. I think that people seemed happier in those days. Keep up the good work.

They were definitely happier times!
I used to walk through there every day for a decade! And it never changed 🤣🤣🤣
Homeless on the city streets, so many.
Way less than Canada or US but definitely more than a few years ago.
RIP the last food court in the city where I could grab lunch without breaking my bank.

That Tenko Mori shop served one of my first meals when I first arrived in Sydney. How fast the city has changed within just 2 years.
Thanks for the update - shared
No worries mate!
Cheers for watching and sharing :)
Another fantastic video, keep up the great work. ✌🏽✌🏽
Thanking you! :)
I wish they get rid of all those dann bicycles that are just left laying around.
Got the Same thing here in the UK..........

Melbourne, Victoria .
Thank you much! 😊😊😊
Been documenting all this myself
❤❤❤ thankyou
I hope they somehow bring back the Chinese food court. That was my favourite place to eat.
Good stuff. To be honest I was never a huge fan of the Connection. Last time I recall being in there, the food court seemed really dingy. I do remember ducking in there in a terrific electrical storm once though!
fantastic, thank you
No problem :)

285 and 296 George Street is heritage listed, they will never remove it.

Yep, Frankies Pizza RIP.
So true
No more culture

Yes. Well, that is the plan, anyway.
Wynyard, Hunter Street Metro, Martin Place Metro and Sydney Trains will all be connected

Hunter Connection was great for a cheap lunch . The old food courts were so much better
"Transport Vlog" has a comprehensive detailed video covering what is and isn't going.

Is there any updates on Harbourside, or is it still just an empty block of land?
A big hole in the ground.
There’s a decent hole in the ground now.
I’ll go back and have a video up in earlyish June :)
The new buildings look so soulless. I hope they look better when they're built.
Dammit they had good food there. And you could stay dry.
I was around there last week but didn't get the chance to look at the old pics. Cheer Phil
They’ll be there for a while :)
Cheers for watching mate :)
Modernising the city's architecture.
I agree 100%... Sydney used to have a lot of character, charm & beautiful old buildings?, now it's just ugly ugly S***!!!!!!!
I am from Marsfield, I never liked massive new build and importation of immigrants into Australia.
Oooh i work in Marsfield! Very cool.
It’s all changing so quickly :(

Such an unnecessary project.
I blame Boe Jiden, funds massive immigration to Australia without a kindy in sihgt.
Yeah.. that must be rhgti 🙄
Yep
The building that's being preserved has a heritage protection on it
