I got reprimanded and told I should've stopped immediately after giving this reasoning to police. I drove with my hazards on at a safe speed for at most a quarter mile to a parking lot (didn't know driving with your hazards on was illegal). The only time in ~10 times I've been pulled over that a cop called backup. Despite that everything went smoothly, I reckon officers just get spooked or uncomfortable in certain circumstances / you don't know how their day has gone and where they're at. Knowing how to talk to and interact with law enforcement has saved me a lot of trouble, it's unfortunate but I feel like at this point it ought to be part of our driving tests.

Absolutely. They’ve both done this before to many people. They could make a bunch of arguments on how a civilian should have handled it in this tense situation.
Cops get less than a year training and have to learn a handbook with state laws and statutes and how to deal with civilians. However they are given the benefit of the doubt whenever they make dangerous mistakes, yet being a civilian is role that we have to play, know all of the rules that we haven’t studied and are supposed to interpret body language and predict how a police officer will act towards you.
They need to have qualified immunity abolished and make them pay for civil suits and damages out of their pensions and maybe that will change the way that they handle their roles.
Do you know that in most jurisdictions that the description of a police officers job is to not “protect and serve”. And they are not required to protect you. They are only responsible for their own personal safety and to make arrests and actually generate crime when there is none, hence bait cars or bat trucks where they stock a truck full of shit that poor people would want.

It's easy for people to talk about what they would do and how people should just comply but the power of the situation almost always changes how people react. Youre not wrong about the driving and how it justified the guns being out but if its me in a backwater area in virginia, No way im doing a random traffic stop in pitch black dark area with little traffic. Seeing how poorly trained these officers were, im glad he did tbh.
Also it doesnt change the fact that a lot of what they did there was highly unprofessional and resulted in them being fired. Why did they try to cover it up? You want cops who try to cover "legal" traffic stops? Why cover it up if nothing wrong happen?
Why defend cops who got fired by their superiors for actions their own Chief said was wrong? That isnt to say the man doesnt deserve some blame but in the end theyre the trained professionals, its on them.

I had a similar experience back in 2010 when I first began openly carrying in Detroit.
I went on a date in downtown Detroit in Greektown. We ate and then we're walking back to her vehicle. I had many people staring and gawking at the holstered guns and ammo around my waist but I just carried on like every other law-abiding citizen; I paid them no mind.
We arrive at her vehicle a few blocks away and she is getting ready to pull off and suddenly we are surrounded by DPD.
An officer approaches the passenger side of the vehicle where I sitting with his gun drawn and pointed at my head and he is yelling get your hands up. So I immediately comply and raise both my hands palms facing him (albeit the window is completely rolled up).
Then the officer orders me to open the door while still yelling keep your hands up. I quickly realize these are conflicting orders and don't make a move, I keep my hands raised.
The officer, getting frustrated as to why I'm not making a motion for opening the door repeats himself, yelling, open the door.
I then ask him which do you want me to do? Open the door or keep my hands up?
The officer with his gun still pointed in my face, rolls his eyes at me like I'm the stupid one and then replies "Open the door." As he gives a slight nod with his head.
I slowly reach down and open the door and then get out. Place my hands on top of the vehicle and allow them to disarm me and pat me down.
I told them I have a valid CPL and showed it to them, they ran my I.D. the serial numbers on my guns and saw that they were properly registered and I had a clean criminal history and then gave everything back.
They said they had recieved several calls about a man with a gun.
The dumb and sheep-like Americans almost got me killed, probably exaggerated their 911 call saying I was running through the streets waving my guns around.
The major irony of all this is that if I had been killed by an officer, and after the facts came out of the investigation; the folks that called the cops on me would be the main ones on the front line protesting about another innocent black man shot by the police for no good reason.

I've had some great experiences with cops and some terrible ones where they threatened to frame me. I acted the same every time, cordial and compliant. Some cops are assholes, thats just how it always was and always will be. And that exists in every profession, thats why you have daycare workers who abuse kids or seem to hate them. Maybe with cops, there is a higher percentage of assholes than average or maybe now...Im not sure. But one thing, in this case, they guy drove 1.5 miles after they put the lights and sirens on. Thats a looong distance to keep going when youre being pulled over and the one cop was compassionate and explained in detail everything that happened and why it happened when they had the guy at the back of his SUV after everything settled down. I believe the cops obviously made some errors but the driver was not only non compliant but quietly defiant. I look at things from right and wrong, and this guy was more wrong than they were. This would happen to an old lady if she kept driving for 1.5 miles after they put the lights on without calling 911 to explain why so the officers are aware, refused to get out, used his arm to keep the car door closed when the officers tried to open it, looked like he had a smirk on his face on his recording in the beginning, complains about his dog choking from the pepper spray but he's the one who put his dog in that position, and didn't have his license plate visible where it was supposed to be which started all this. And he's military so he knows very well about orders and following commands, and because he is probably would have just been given a warning about it. Look how even when he was outside the car on the ground, he wouldn't comply then either he made them wrestle with him to handcuff him. And they even opened the window on his car to help his dog. In this case, besides the cop saying you should be scared to get out, they weren't really in the wrong. It sucks and I wouldn't want to be in that position, but you should try to de-escalate not be combative and argumentative because just like a referee in a baseball game, you can complain all you want but they're not going to change their mind.

With a stricter Gun Law, you wouldn't have to deal with the whole "Hands out your Window"-Stuff, because the average Cop wouldn't have always to think "Damn, he could've a gun and kill me", that in addition to always put two Cops in one Car is pretty much the reason why you can in Germany simple sit in your car, and pull out all your Papers/Licence and directly give it to the Cop while the Cop is relaxed and actually do expect it kinda to get at least the Licence given at the "Hallo, I'm an official Cop, see my Uniform? If you want I can show you my Cop ID."-Start.
Don't get me wrong, it isn't like "Well, Europe is better in every way" - I just wanna point out that the way the Police Force is handled in addition with the loose Gun Laws simple creates issues for the "average Guy who becomes Police Cop". Those Dudes are Humans too and Humans tend to think irrational and try to find "patterns".
For an example, if you think about Germany you probaly either think "Beer", "Leatherpants" or both, while for an example "Leatherpants" (=Lederhos'n) are actually kinda offensive for the majority of Germany. So you would also kinda expect to see some of this stuff if you come over here, and if you visit the majority of Germany you would probaly be like "Damn, no Lederhos'n, why not?".
Same with guns. If you're used to carry one yourself, if you see them often at work etc. - You simple kinda "expect somebody to be armed" and so on.
