  • In this video, Sinead, a tour guide with Free Tours by Foot takes you on a journey inside the City of London to discover the Old Bailey and learn about its dark past. MORE LONDON WALKS - • Playlist .
This is de facto part 2 of our unofficial "executions series". Today, the Old Bailey is the name of London's highest criminal court but it was once the location of the Newgate Prison and the site of many public executions, including one of Amelia Dyer, who was convicted of murdering roughly 400 infant children.

That is beautiful! Thank you for the tour. What is the hideous, monstrously dull box building with gross colours across the street from it? Why did they build that eyesore? It reeks of Communist, hateful of nature and beauty, dull architecture. Why would they barf that onto the street across from such an historic and beautifully built building? Good grief. That sure is UGLY.

The old Bailey is just a crown court and is no more senior than any other crown court
      It's just more famous
The courts of the criminal system are
      • magistrates court (civil equivalent county court)
      • Crown court
      • (civil equivalent high court with *LIMITED* jurisdiction over crown court)
      • Court of appeal
      • Supreme Court

@@Keithbarber she's talking about the actual building. The Old Bailey is where hideous crimes, such as serial killings, famous National prosecutions, and general celebre horriblis crimes are tried.
She is correct, in that crown courts tend to be geographically local to the criminal, whereas the old Bailey is the central court for National trials.
Listing the levels of judicial court is irrelevant, as they are just non mortar definitions.

Good video but some of your information is wrong. You are correct when you said about the last public execution being carried out in 1868 , but you are totally wrong regards the last actual execution being carried out in 1965, and wrong in stating that it took place at the Tower of London. I can advise you that the last Executions that were carried out in the UK were of two criminals convicted of murder furtherence to theft on 13th August 1964, both were hanged at the same time but in seperate prisons. The last person executed at the Tower of London was a German Spy on 15 August 1941, and that was by firing squad.

The Custodian Helmet is the headgear traditionally worn by male police constables and sergeants while on foot patrol in England and Wales. Officers of all ranks in most forces are also issued a flat, peaked cap that is worn on mobile patrol in a vehicle. Ranks above sergeant wear the peaked cap only. However, some Inspectors wear the Custodian Helmet, but with two silver bands around the base (to match the two pips worn as rank insignia) to denote their position.
Claimed by some sources to have been based on the spiked pickelhaube worn by the Prussian Army, it was first adopted by the London Metropolitan Police in 1863 to replace the "stovepipe" top hat worn since 1829. In 1863, the Metropolitan Police replaced the previous uniform of white trousers, swallow-tailed coat and top hat in favour of very dark blue trousers, a more modern button up tunic and the early type of helmet which had an upturned brim at the front and a raised spine at the back, running from the bottom to the top of the helmet, which became known as the "cockscomb".

I used to work in the building opposite the courthouse and learnt quite a lot about the area. When the Central Criminal Court was opened by Edward VII in 1907, a lift was installed, still there but not sure if it is still used, as the King was getting a bit portly and would have struggled with the stairs. The stones used in the façade of the courthouse are from the demolished prison and the public house opposite Newgate prison called the 'Magpie and Stump', (a new version of which is still there), used to sell a 'hanging breakfast' which is what it sounded like, you could buy a breakfast and have a window view of a public execution. The execution room is still at the back of the courthouse entered by an ever decreasing series of doorways, and some cells still exist in the basement of the courthouse including the original 'Newgate knocker' where the phrase 'as black as Newgate knocker' comes from.

Love your tours, Sinead. Have you done one for St Paul's Cathedral and the London churches; I couldn't find one on your site. I have heard a lot of nice stories about the churches especially after the London fire but have never seen any video dealing with them all. St Paul's in Mary Poppins was magnificent but was only seen in the song 'Feed the Birds'. The churches might be a nice walking tour but I don't know how scattered they are. Thank You. Take care, keep safe with this Delta variant.

I was able to get into the Black Museum at Scotland Yard about 2 years ago. I had to be "chosen" from a bunch of applicants and waited a few months. It is beyond belief. Cameras not allowed. You have to have been employed as a law enforcement officer to get in. I wish you could swing that. I wish you could talk them into letting you do a modified, limited video. It's one on the most amazing things I've ever seen.

I went to the Black Museum exhibition at the Museum of London about five years ago. It had many of the most notorious Black Museum items, including hanging ropes, death head masks, Dr. Crippen's spade and the pyjama jacket, Harry Roberts' gun, Charles Peace's violin. It was incredible, but I'm not sure such an exhibition has been done before or since. I bought the souvenir book from the gift shop, being as cameras were not allowed, and the book has colour photos of the items I saw in person. An amazing day.
