Mark Christiansen (00:00): Well, hello there I'm Mark Christiansen, visual effects, artist and motion designer. In this short video, I'm going to show you a mocha tracking tip that will basically give you a new superpower Motion tracking is one of the most common tasks. And after effects, artists will tackle. I'm going to show you a time-saving trick that will blow your mind. Now, if you really want to hone your compositing chops, check out the effects for motion, the compositing and visual effects class that's built for motion designers. You can also download the project files and using this video to follow along or practice with after you're done, watching details are in the description.
Mark Christiansen (00:44): All right, so here's a fun challenge. We're going to remove the word. Stop from the stop sign. Most likely illegal. We're going to replace it with the school of motion logo. Now on the surface, this may seem like a fairly straightforward tracking exercise, but if you approach it the wrong way, you'll be fighting the software the entire time. The first thing we're going to need to do is track the sign. We're going to do that using mocha III, which comes for free with after effects. So that applied the mocha effect layer. Now I'm going to click this button, but before I do that, I need to be in full resolution. Now mocha has opened and we're ready to track, even though this is sort of the light version of mocha, it is very powerful. And there are a lot of features. If you really want to go deep with this tool, checkout VFX for motion link in the description.
Mark Christiansen (01:34): MOCA is a planar tracker, which means that it can actually look at a very large area of your image and figure out how that area is moving. It can even pick up things like perspective change, which is present at the beginning of the shot right here. So to start, I'm going to come up here and just grab the X spline tool. I'm going to zoom into the image a little bit, and then I'm going to draw a shape around the word stop. All I'm trying to do is pick an area that has some good details that the planar tracker can keep track of it. Now, because this tracking area is moving rotating, scaling, and shifting perspective. We do need to have all of these boxes check down here. Now I can track forward. You can see that MOCA is doing a very good job of tracking this blue area.

After so many videos, tutorials, courses, this is the only one that gave me the step by step solution! Mark, really thankful 🙏
I can confirm THIS COURSE IS AMAZING! just completing it, you will learn: matching, tracking, keying, ROTO, and some 3D integration 🤟😎 Mark is a wizard and shares his knowledge with ease! Cannot say enough good things about this course!
Thanks for the love, Logan! Mark basically downloaded his brain into this course :)

Very well exposed, plain and simple. "The Secret" is what I was looking for and nobody ever explained. I was going into camera projection and stuff like that... Since "removing things" is a large part of my job, this REALLY saved my life, forever. Thank you very much and keep up the good job!
Very nice tutorial!! tracking, colour, textures, etc. Very helpful workflow that Mark is showing. Thanks for all that.
I will have to master this tutorial. The basics explained perfectly! Thank you School of Motion
It still blows my mind how fast and how good Mocha works
Absolutely brilliant tutorial, thank you so much for sharing!!👍🏻😎
Awesome tutorial! New to Mocha. Question: So I followed your steps. I created two masks, 1st mask was the stop sign and 2nd mask is the street sign. In the Patch comp, when I turn the video into a guide, it throws off the 2nd mask (street sign). This only happens when I don't make the video a guide. Do you know why this would happen?
This video is amazing, always come back here when I need it.
Super cool!! Great tutorial video Mark.
Thank you Mark for this AMAZING tutorial. And I really want to dive into the full course with you. But my mac seems to take the Mocha tracking time with much more time and difficulties, prompting 'nothing left to track' error message several times. I'm guessing it's due the machine . And how powerful of a machine would be required to take the "VFX For Motion" course? [I have a MacBook Pro (13-in, 2017)
💻: Processor 2.3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5. 💾Memory 8 GB 2133 MHz LPDDR3. Storage: 128G. 📷Graphics: Intel Iris Plus Graphics 640 1536MB]
I can see the micro movements of a new sign. I was wondering if this would be done better if used the built in AE camera tracker?
Exactly what i was looking for. great tricks
Finally a tutorial well done!
Thank you so much for thisssss! But my null object is not following my track, also any other of my images :( they all in perfect size with my clip
How did you track the logo once the re-scaling and corner pin had been applied at 08:35? If you followed the same method as before this would have messed up the sizing and positioning no?
The new logo feels like it’s floating a bit and not fixed in the sign’s plane... just me?
It is floating. Unfortunately it´s not such a solid track. I´ve had the same issues with mocha. Sometimes it´s just better to use PF track or even After effect´s built in 3d camera tracker, place a solid there, and use it as a matte. Pretty much the same process but with a different tracking method, and you would still be able to do a little 3d insertion into the shot as well since you would get 3d tracking info and not just planar. But it´s still a very good tutorial, just the track slips a little bit.
@@fredcastro4252 2:42 He used just 30 pixels, so maybe that's why. I use 90.
This tutorial is amzing ! thank you !
Excellent Tutorial!
Thanks Man this is a great way to cleanup!!!! #killedit
hi, i have a question. when i am tracking leyer 1 and want to replace the logo from there I will do same what you do but my logo layer was disappear or too much small. what can I do? please sir reply me
I'm having a problem tracking night-time drone footage of a building facade the camera is approaching. I'm trying to create corner pins to create a vertical line/plane for text to track floating just above the footage of the building facade, but the vertical space I created with with the shape tool leans backwards as the created shape moves closer to the camera. I can correct the tracking shape, when I scrub through the footage, but the corner pins lean backwards even though the tracking shape doesn't. When I try to correct the perspective of the corner pins at each end of the footage, it continues to distort. Should I try instead to the Motion Tracking instead?
broo, why you didnt remove it from content aware fill or from removing button in mocha?
Mark is a VFX Superhero !!
I love this man's vioce.
Thank you for Magic bullet! From Belgium
Awesome!!! Thanks!!!
omg, this video helped me win a 3 HOUR battle with a problem shot that was not playing nice at all. THANK YOU T_T
How do I track a camera pan movement without a surface I want to draw any shapes on?
You save my job!
*Great!*
Great video. I tried to follow but had an issue. I'm tracking a circular road sign and when creating tracking data and importing my replacement it's distorted
great! thank you
Great!!! I did this tutorial successfully.
how?? when i apply the logo (as in the video at 3:57), the logo isn't in the correct position. I know i'm doing something wrong. It has to be something regarding the format or the position of the 2 video, but whaat??
Thanks for this
I build a head with FaceBuilder with 4 Pictures and exported this as a OBJ file.
The Track with GeoTracker in AE was ok. How can i activate
the textures which were build with FaceBuilder?
Thank you for sharing this technique. where's are the project assets?
yea Mocha is an amazing tool !
Excellent.
THANK YOU
well done!
If I manually track when mocha cannot, the tracking goes way off in after affect. Any solution?
I love this video but i m also facing alot of problems there like error in psd file tracking side of the object.....
oh yeah thanks !
This has nearly sold me on this course!
I am just wrapping up the animation course! It has been fantastic. Already signed up for another course that starts in Jan.
can you make one more video on how to put that image in with the right ratio?
THIS!
This is fully sik man! Thanks for sharing..
does it works to you?? when i apply the logo (in the video at 3:57), the logo isn't in the correct position. I know i'm doing something wrong. It has to be something regarding the format or the position of the 2 video, but whaat??
@@annamobeene we sort of used it as a base & hacked it with a few ither techniques.. bit of a mash up.. I know.. that doesn't really help.. soz..
Bro is it safe to download from get into pc
I did all the things but the layer's position is very far from the placeholder....
When I apply export, the logo just flies off to a completely wrong part of the frame. Any suggestions on what i did wrong?
Solved: My footage was in 4K, bur my compositions were in Full HD. So as my footage was another resolution than both my comps, the tracking data was off.
@@swaupy I have the same issue but with text. How do I fix this with text on a 4k video?
@@ben_angel Try pre-composing the text in a 4K (3840x2160) Comp. Then apply it to that composition :)
same here when i apply the logo (as in the video at 3:57), the logo isn't in the correct position. I know i'm doing something wrong. It has to be something regarding the format or the position of the 2 video, but whaat??
Anyone else have an issue with the freeze frame PNG bing off in color?
Check your export preferences and make sure "Convert to sRGB" is unchecked. That fixed it for me, hope it helps!
im trying to put a graphics on the ground floor captured video footage and mocha does track but it somehow loses its head when im trying to copy track data unto the graphics.
Making it all jumble mumble
thats a pretty untechnical description of what's going wrong.
Could you use the content aware in AE?
Yes..
Thank you for Auto-Generated Transcript. RESPECT.
Better and faster to use stab precomp in mochaimport i think)
Tracking in mocha is very slow...how can one track fast ?
General Kenobi!
I have a problem. Not my logo stuck to the sign. Stuck somewhere else? Why?

the layer disappear :(
Can you do this with some other FREE android software for Samsung Tablet?
the new sign is floating
The first one...was floating...
Nice
Wow
Nice vid! You didn't respect exactly sign's perspective but thx for sharing the trick :)

Broken Link :(
Fixed it.
SO THANK YOUUU... I dont know if plannar can be upsize.. hahahahahah
THIS IS NUTS.
Its not working for me. When apply the picture, it missing
same here when i apply the logo, did you solved?
It looks great tracking wise but the design of the new sign is flawed.
When you altered the perspective of the logo you gave it the wrong perspective. Now the motion of the sign into frame looks really trippy. I think the perspective warp was unnecessary to begin with. You could've just photoshopped the logo into the clean plate. That would've been more efficient. You could also add the shadows over top of the logo in photoshop.
This would be more effort but I think it would save time AND it would make the motion of the logo into frame not look so trippy.
The replaced logo is floating.
Im not impressed
Perfect, but the download link is a 404. Nice job as always.
That link should be working now :)
Yes it is!
did you find the Black and white logo also?
I appreciate the tutorial but you move too quickly through several parts and fail to mention some key steps that leave those of us new to this approach scratching out heads. The cursor jumps around too much to areas not associated with the steps and the screen cuts are too harsh which further confuses. You need smoother transitions from zoom to not zoomed and cursor location highlighters... In the end I've had to spend a couple hours going though it several times only to have substandard results. I still do not understand how to get my replacement assets to to match there actual size 1:1 and my track drifts... and all I'm trying to do is apply a label to a box that pans off screen.
This is exactly my issue. Like, what has to be exactly the same as the footage for it to work? 😄
Did you fix it?
@@ben_angel Yout gotta make sure the anchor points are the same for both footages. He explains it really well czcams.com/video/hPtfrFsNHJY/video.html

It doesn't look right. Logo looks scew or is it just me?
which file do you use? you should add more information on which clip to begin with, where this logo is.. All I can find is a multicolored illustrator file .. ugh.. no helpful at all
he shows that he applied the FILL mask. Did you solve then?

thats a bad track btw
Not really a secret technique, actually one of the common methods to use in Mocha.
Nice tutorial. But the vocal fry is killing me! 😖
Way too much bs for nothing.
