    The JP Morgan Chase Headquarters, a looming presence in New York City's Midtown Manhattan, is poised to become a groundbreaking addition to the city's iconic skyline. Standing at an impressive 1,388 feet, this 60-story skyscraper is not only set to become the 7th tallest structure in the United States but also promises to be the "largest all-electric tower" globally. The journey of this architectural marvel began in February 2018, with the announcement of the demolition of the Union Carbide Building to make way for a structure that would redefine the city's landscape.
    Demolition and Reconstruction:
    The Union Carbide Building, constructed in 1960, was voluntarily demolished between 2019 and 2021, marking a significant milestone as the tallest voluntarily demolished building globally. The new headquarters, designed by Foster + Partners, a London-based architectural firm, covers the entire city block and involves the purchase of air rights from neighboring structures. The approved design features a unique stepped structure with nine connected rectangular prisms, creating a visually striking and efficient use of space. The tower's base, supported by diamond-shaped trusses, will stand approximately 80 feet off the ground, contributing to an open and inviting street-level environment.
    Architectural Features:
    The interior of the building boasts 2.5 million square feet of working space, providing 25 percent more volume per person than its predecessor, the Union Carbide Building. With accommodations for an estimated 14,000 workers, the facility includes amenities such as a food hall, a penthouse conference center, a fitness center, and generously illuminated spaces designed to enhance the working environment. The building's unique design and thoughtful incorporation of natural light aim to make it an appealing workplace, potentially encouraging a return to the office.
    Construction Progress:
    The construction timeline has seen several milestones, from the initial scaffolding placement in July 2019 to the completion of the main tower's demolition by April 2021. Cranes and construction elevators were erected on-site by the end of the year, and progress continued with the completion of the first two setbacks by May 2023. However, construction faced a temporary setback in March 2023 when a worker tragically fell to their death from the 12th floor, leading to a brief suspension of work. Despite this setback, the building reached its topping-out ceremony on November 20, 2023, marking a significant milestone in its completion.
    Financial Investment:
    The ambitious project comes with a hefty price tag of $3 billion, a considerable investment for JPMorgan Chase. The company, which reported a record $49.6 billion profit in 2023, appears committed to making a lasting mark on the city's skyline and consolidating its New York City offices at 270 Park Avenue.
    Environmental Considerations:
    One of the most striking claims about the tower is its assertion to be the "largest all-electric tower in the world." However, there is skepticism regarding this statement, particularly from an electrical engineering perspective. While Foster + Partners claim the building will be powered by renewable energy from a New York State hydroelectric plant, the reality of electricity distribution raises questions about the actual source of power. Despite this, the building incorporates sustainable features such as advanced water storage and reuse systems, reducing water usage by over 40 percent, and energy-efficient elements like triple-pane glazing on the façade and automatic solar shades connected to HVAC systems.

But we all know what is going on - conflict of interests; many high-profile people (also from the Corp world) have vested interested in real-estate funds that would suffer if those offices were empty. They do not look on the benefits of average Joe (cutting travel, expenses of communiting, life in an expensive city), they look on the side of billionaires and other cronies who need to be even more richer, who are so stupid that forget that if you get rid of a functioning middle-class, the society is doomed.

Then around maybe 2014 or 2015 I started noticing taller buildings pop up that kind of fit Manhattan's skyline. Now, since about maybe 2019 some of these towers just look out of place. I am dumbfounded by the mention of the fact that the power utilized will likely not come from renewable resouces. Nobody signs these contracts for power utilized, they are for power purchased. Ergo the end user is essentially agreeing to fund the construction of renewable resources equivalent to their expected use over a period of time for a set price. To even try and claim the electricity that they will use will be natural gas is a bogus claim because at the end of the day North America is actually split into a very small amount of basically distinct sectors of electric dris, but within thise sectors there is no way tu guarantee what generating source flows to where

    • @KlignEngineering
      @KlignEngineering  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Dustin, you make a very well-constructed argument, but I disagree because "sourcing" the electricity from this hydro plant cannot be guaranteed by the specific location (as you even mentioned in your final statement). If I have a mini solar field in my front yard (that's capable of powering my house) and feed it back into the grid, am I "sourcing" 100% renewable power?

    • @user-wm9sy9qd4h
      @user-wm9sy9qd4h Před 4 měsíci +5

      @@KlignEngineeringI think Dustin is right. As long as the electric company holds up their end of the deal, it's valid to say that the building is powered by clean energy.
      We all share the same world so it doesn't matter if that new clean energy is being used to power this specific building or being used to power homes on the other side of the world. The end result is the same.
