    A photographer captured a stunning time-lapse video of a lenticular cloud hovering over a mountain peak.
    Bartosz Wojczynski filmed the time-lapse in Tenerife, Spain, capturing the cloud's mesmerising movements that are hard to notice with the naked eye.
    His video, which shows the layered-looking cloud hovering and spinning above a mountain peak, went viral online with millions of views.
    Bartosz said: “One second of the video is roughly five minutes in real time.

    "Lenticular" means lens shaped. These clouds typically form along the leeward face of mountains when wind and atmospheric conditions are right. As wind passes across the mountain, it "crests" and forms an area of low pressure and if the dew point is just right, atmospheric moisture condenses in the low pressure area. Wonderful video, showing this effect!

    As a glider pilot we LOVE lenticular clouds as a sign of wave. We can fly in smooth air over a long distance at very high altitude in this phenomena.
    .
    Notice there are 'shelves' in the wave. This shows a sophistication in the power of the wind going up and different heights of condensation. ie: there is an upper strength of wind, mid-altitude strength of wind and lower-altitude strength of wind (and more layers in between).
    .
    I am mesmerized by this effect and want to spend time in a glider exploring the different effects.
    .
    This is such a great video - I truly liked watching the effect go well into the night and I am VERY curious of the power of the effect at night.
    .
    If you are traveling in a Jet liner (at night) and you go through some turbulance - I am convinced this is the effect that is causing that turbulance.... at 30,000ft !!!

    That’s awesome. I’m actually currently training to become a pilot, and I just graduated ground school. And when we were looking at meteorology and looking at types of weather hazards, this type of cloud showed up. We learned that at the base of these beautiful lens-shaped clouds, or the bottom of wind crests caused by mountainous terrain if I am not mistaken, you can come across altocumulus Roll Clouds, or more commonly known as, “Rotor Clouds”. Which form as a result of surface friction with wind blowing over the top of a mountain. And these Rotor Clouds can cause severe problems if you fly into them as they contain incredibly severe turbulence and strong updrafts and downdrafts of wind shear, enough to rip off the wings of a Cessna! Which truly amazed me. After learning about these clouds, I wanted to find out more about them, they are such beautiful clouds, yet pilots generally fear them😅. Great video!

    • @markplain2555
      @markplain2555 Před 6 měsíci

      How ironic that we as pilots who fly gliders seek out the wave and we go play in the wave. We LOVE wave. Which is all a good thing - you power pilots stay away, we can now use wave to go up to some crazy height and we don't have to face any encounters.... we are both happy !!!😃

    So does this cloud maintain a permanent presence above that mountain or is it just there for a long period of time?

    • @timewastetv7019
      @timewastetv7019 Před 2 lety +5

      Lenticular clouds are formed in the presence of Mountain waves, when strong winds are blowing at right angles to a mountain range, this produces a downdraft and severe turbulence downstream of it. With sufficient humidity an lenticular cloud can be formed in the crests of the downstream waves. Sometimes a ragged cylindrical roll cloud forms in the rotor zones as well. So it only form when the wind and humidity is right and it does not stay there permanently, however it might stay there for a while depending how long the wind stays on that direction.
