Powerplex STL will retain the interior design and keep the storefronts intact. It’s what’s inside the former stores that’s gonna change. It’s still going to be a mall, albeit mixed use.

You're the only person I've heard on here that actually has nice things to say about the mills style. I personally think they look really cool. I don't like modern malls that have a minimalist style, I think they're boring, look dull and are character-less. I give Mills corp credit for trying something new.

Seeing these nearly abandoned Mills malls seems so strange to me. The one in my city, Katy Mills easily has over 95% occupancy with all but one anchor spot filled. The development of the city around the mall helped to keep it going strong. Sadly the mall is about to undergo a renovation that will neutralize the interior with the plain boring colors that are popular these days. All of the cool colorful neon will be removed which really sucks.

Worked at this mall at the Old Navy there. It started to go downhill when they put a bus stop in. A lot of drug dealing, gang problems and things never let it really stand a chance beyond that. All my friends quit, everyone stopped shopping there and went to other malls to shop because it was scary.

That sounds a lot like what happened to the Jamestown Mall in Florissant. Used to go there all the time but eventually it just kept going more and more downhill and it was because of the people that frequented it. Sad. They had the best deal for seeing a movie around.

@@xandriapage9349 The new sports development, is called Powerplex. Though it's sad since this video was filmed, that Regal Cinemas pulled out, and that Cabela's lease only is till something like 2021 or 2022 if I recall correctly. With a Bass Pro Shops store something like 7 miles away, I worry they won't keep their store open here. As for the skate park(on the site of what used to be NASCAR Cafe), I hope Powerplex allows them to stay open as part of the new development.

pilotgrrl1 High school kids started fighting there and it caused some people to stop going because the fights were happening nonstop. It was also some theft issues as well. When all of this happened along with the other reasons stated in the video stores started pulling out of the mall.

@steveo314 I've visited Saint Louis Mills before, and it was built in a mostly industrial area with not a lot of houses nearby. That has to hurt this mall, for sure. Ditto with Jamestown Mall(similar factors, the developer was hoping for more development nearby which didn't occur as much as they hoped), which closed a few years earlier back in 2014.

I think the biggest problem was that they decided to place it all the way out in Hazelwood, instead of close to St. Louis proper. The other malls in the area are frankly just easier to access. The Galleria is just outside of city limits. West County is a 10 minute drive the West End. South County is a 20 minute drive from Downtown. On the contrast, The Mills is a good 25 minutes northwest of the the city and they didn't really provide much that the other malls didn't. Still hope they repurpose the space though, I spent a good part of my childhood out there.

Not to shop but to have fun Like at the skate park he would always drop me off the balcony into the foam pit. Or the neon mini golf we used to play hide and seek in there but now I’m 14 and my dad went to jail when I was about 10. So I will always remember this place and it is sad to see it go.

This mall went further under when the two (outdoor) malls opened in Chesterfield, MO near the Missouri River. It was much more alive when I first moved to the St. Louis area in 2008 than it is now. Seeing all the traffic that passes by every day, it’s surprising how dead it is. If it wasn’t for the Cabelas and Burlington, it would be closed by now. The last time I went over there, there were a bunch of younger people that seemed threatening walking around the mall, so I didn’t go back. The book store looks like it may be close to closing, too.

I used to take my oldest to the mall when she was younger. We used to have mother daughter dates there. Should note that the deal has gone through for turning the mall into a place called PowerPlex they have taken and turned some of the hallways into volley ball courts and for the summer they are doing a summer drive in with a concert then a movie. They have also held a few graduations so for some of the school's graduating class of 2020. The main reason the mall did not do so well was because of the area it was in. When school would get out it was a place for the teens to go and there were fights and people were getting tired of it.

Its so weird to see a dead Mills. The "Mills" mall in my area has the same design (well no ice rink, skate park or gokarts) as this one and is booming in popularity over other malls nearby...however what saves ours probably is the a.)International airport nearby and B.) Casino with direct access to mall. But if I outlet shop I def prefer the indoor ones vs the standard open air ones.

      Z. A. I recently went to the Grapevine Mills back in May and is glad to see the mall still thrives with plenty of stores and entertainment such as Sealife Aquarium, Lego Park, Rainforest Cafe as well as upscale stores such as Off 5th Saks Fifth Avenue. I went to this mall too during its opening year (2003) and was thrilled with a lot of stores, entertainment options such as NASCAR Speedway and the Skatepark as well as plenty of dining options such as Johnny Rockets, Tony Roma’s, and many more. I’m shocked to see such a huge mall failed.

It's funny how all these Mills malls have struggled and died while next door in Tempe, AZ, Arizona Mills is busy and thriving. You will see some vacancies, particularly the south end, but go on a weekend and it's busy and full of people even before closing time. There are no traditional anchors as even the large stores blend in. The mall is anchored at the north end by a Sea Life, LEGOland Discovery Center, Tilt Studio and a 24 screen plus IMAX Harkins Theater. Food court is even 100% occupied.

Where else to you get a mini golf, huge playground, and ice ring, climbing wall and go cart all in one mall for the kids to enjoy, especially during winter cabin fever months. I think once Westfield malls in Black Jack and St Ann closed its locations, all sorts of bad drug users and thieves started to flood the mills mall, it became unsafe and business were suffering from amount of thefts that they were experiencing. Just sad that such beautiful mall is such a waste of space now.
