Whether you grow organic, synthetic, or deep water culture, here's what you need to know about picking the perfect media for your plants.
The first 4 minutes I found out why i had so many issues with my grow. Charged media, Fox Farm and I pushed and paid dearly!
I'm getting staggering results growing peppers , tomatoes, lettuce and cannabis using ebb and flow... MasterBlend for the win!
Soil & Coco mix.. but recently I put them on a heated mattress topper from amazon and warmed the medium up 24/7 and they are loving life.. can see a huge spurt in growth everyday all organic Gaia Green.. Definitely making a massive difference warming the medium. .
Great tip!
Really love promix hp with 20% perlite addition. I have done soil and coco/perlite. So far promix is my favorite. I have a tub of subcool supersoil cooking now so maybe that will make me fall back in love with soil.
I love my Pro-Mix. I'm never going to stop!
Started with soil nearly 40 years ago. Switched to DWC (deep water culture) 20 years ago and haven't looked back.
I'm just a guy that grows a few plants a year. I can't think of an easier way to get your own supply of great product.
Just like you stated, 2 or 3 5-gallon systems. The only thing I monitor is pH. I don't cool my solution, it is what it is. They also don't share solution. Each unit is self contained. I do have a big air pump to run 6 stones, 2 per bucket.
Run an in-line fan for ventilation, that's it. You do need to look at the plants daily. I've not had an air pump fail but that would be catastrophic.
Using the same ballasts as 40 years ago, too. I know lights have come a long way, but as long as they are still working, what the heck.
This hobby can be as simple or complicated as you like.
Right on. I had decided DWC would be too fiddly for me but after reading your comments I think I’ll try a bucket or 2. Thanks for your viewpoint!
@@dac7046 Use a good aerator. Keep those roots oxygenated. The rest is just pick some nutrients made for that duty. Monitor your pH every day when you top off. Prune as you like. It's that easy. Only photos for me, no auto-flower. Change water/nutes when you flip the lights.
Good Luck
Great stuff! Learning every time I watch a video. Can't wait for spring 🌱.
Soil made especially for cannibus produces the highest quality buds. Build a soil in Colorado is the company that helped me the most.
Recharge is the shit for all plants!!!!
💪
I have to agree, i want to yse it on all my house plants too now.
Lots of really great information! I use organic fertilizer at planting time and feed synthetic throughout the season . Over my 30 plus years of gardening I find I like using both together. I tried tons of gardening styles over the years my favorite is row crops where I get to play on my antique tractor [lots of weeding though] . The Back to Eden style is nice as well it's pretty much plant it and forget it . I don't really care for pots or raised beds for all the watering that has to be done but I do them anyway. Thanks for sharing and have a great day!
Thank you for Sharing!
I waste 2 hours watering and 3-4 hours fertilizing on the farm I work at it is separated greenhouses with multiple raised beds and buckets, especially the tomato houses I have to be super careful of the hose looping and lifting it's a pain in the butt. Farmer has mentioned running tubes down the beds so it auto waters on a timer but with all the other matience and replanting tilling ect I can't find time to get it done
I use 5yr old 10 gallon living soil fabric pots. Been growing the dank ever since.
Very nice!
Been growing in soil for a few years now, have just switched to coco and running the CX line of nutrients, the first three weeks of vege have been very impressive - vigorous healthy growth so far!!
Nice, good luck with the switch!
Dwc here and I love it
I listen to everything you say and take it to heart. Thanks Raoul
10 gallon fabric...Happy frog on top...Strawberry Fields on bottom. 4th week of flower...so far...lookin good!
I’ve never heard of FFOF being a water only soil. It needs to be amended after 3-4 weeks. It will carry most plants through veg but never have I ever heard OF being water only throughout.
I have read this claim many, many times on Reddit and message boards. I just started with FFOF
I start my plants in ffof in fabric pots for a month to two month, then I plant it in the ground and let them jump. The reason I do this is because ffof carries the plant for a while and then when it connects to the ground, it doubles. I do too dress once planted in ground. The only thing I feed my plant when they are in fabric pots are aloe and Cal mag and one dose of silica.
Do an episode with one medium and how to grow specifically in it. At least several!
Since I use drip irrigation I've moved to Cocoa but sometimes I still run Happy Frog with Organic amendments and I always run two 5 gallon dwc buckets cuz that how started 14 years ago and its fun to see the dif between coco dwc soil under
Which is your favorite?
I am notorious at overwatering. I have never quite lost a plant, but my first half dozen grows were far from peak potential. The last several years I have been using SIPs and have finally been able to get great results. I am only set up for a 3x3 but I can still produce enough medicine for myself with enough left over to share with 2 of my sons.
It's almost too simple. The hardest part is setting up the boxes, but Jermey over at BuildASoil has a great tutorial that works every time. After the initial setup, I just set my timer and fill the 3-gallon reservoir once or twice per week. That is all. Just plain tap water. I use 2 Earthboxes and can grow a pound of flower every 12 weeks with a top dress between grows.
Hell Yeah!
Sunshine mix #4(peat moss, perlite) , i add 50% vermiculite or about 1cf to each bale with mykos.
Lol im actually in the middle of making my media righ now ...too funny..love your channel
Awesome, Thank you.
I like this guy, he looks like he is so fucking baked he does not know what planet he is on anymore, but is actually really well informed and knows what he is talking about.
I’m still pretty new to growing, and a grow shop guy I respect encouraged me to shift from soil to coco. Results have been exceptional! I was leery of the added hands on attention and being physically tied down a coco grow would entail but solved that with a decent pump for the drip system and a decent drain system. I was worried coco would be intolerant of dumb mistakes like the time the drip system didn’t run for at least 24 hrs because of something stupid I did but it was all fine. I’m using a name brand coco/perlite blend and I add nutrients plus cal/mag and silica with each watering.
My first real grow was hydroponic in kitty litter buckets. I grew 2 NLxBB autos with great success. I took a few years off from growing, and now I'm 3 weeks into a coco grow with 3 seeds I found in dispo weed. I dont remember the strain. The other day, I stumbled onto this channel and learned about buffering my coco prior to potting. Here's to hoping I have success down the road I started them in unbuffered coco and added calmag with every feeding. I just potted them in 2 gal with buffered coco I mixed myself.
I grow with a mix of ff soils, extra perlite and verm, worm castings and organic nutes. My own recipe but it seems to work well. I feed teas through out the grow. Also using RECHARGE in my teas. My plants putter out at the end of flower, which I think is perfect, no need to flush or leave lights off. I can dry in a week and it tastes just as good as a 2 week dry.
i do similar except I add dr earth 444 and 387 dry amendments every 2 weeks after the first month. I had to add calmag near the end too but honestly very low maintenance.
Man really would like to see you do a video on the grow buckets. Using them adding nuts with them. I am just about complete with my first grow bucket grow and they have came out amazing.
Cant go wrong with promix.
Try reusing your rootballs by fully flushing them clear, digging out the original 1gal rootball and sticking a new plant in it.
Lots of extra organic goodness
I use HP promix (with mycorizha) in my Earthboxes and get stellar results.
Thanks for the tips!
I use same outdoor holes each year. And do look at the old roots. Not a whole lots of people talk about differences in cannabis cultivars roots.
Promix is great but yea you can definitely still go wrong with Promix HP. It can go hydrophobic
@@eliinthewolverinestate6729 I'm going to try a couple outdoors this summer.
Do you amend promix into a soil or use as-is and feed with nutes?
This is the way I do it Coco all the way it's a lot more hands-on because I water and feed twice a day when I did organic it was boring The plants grew slow and water when the pot is light That's for lazy growers when I started using bottles my plant exploded harvest was bigger stems was like three times bigger 6 weeks from seed I'm ready to flip I do I start in cups from seed then 1 gallon then 3 gallons I don't go no higher
Facts what kinda nutrients you run?
darn you, wasting my time, learn to write a bit please.
Idk I have a soilmix im using and im blowing my homies shit out the water..but coco is the truth
Tell you the truth I went through a mall in the past couple of years every run I tried to switch up but the best one that I found that I like was Flora flex
Believe it or not in the seedling stage I water everyday with a little bit of runoff after a week I start watering twice a day with nutrients 50 PPM and I work my way up The key is try to keep them in small pots but you have to water twice a day I also have the floor flex watering system it helps when I'm at work floral flex has that drain that's also nice to do cuz it's a pain in the butt to empty all the trays everyday
Im on my first run with coco and auto pots. So far so good. I on week two so I really haven't started with the bottom water. Just top water for now
I'm using $ store organic potting soil with a bit more perlite and worm castings. Been working perfectly for years
Domion Blend is an amazing super soil. I”m running my 5year old Coots mix in my beds & Dominion in my earthboxes for its second run. Absolutely amazing results using recharge ❤
Indoors, Peat/Cocco approx 60:40 ratio,.....+wormcastings,and pumice. In other words 6 parts peat, 4 parts wormcastings and 4 parts pumice.Amnended with dry, granular organic nutrients.
Thats the way we like it. KISS. Set it up and its water only from seed to harvest!
i use ocean forest for my grows. ive only ever grown autos. never had any problems. just gotta remember to add nutrients about a month into it. i also use their big bloom and tiger bloom as well as cal-mag and ph it every time ofc. every now and then ill put in some molasses. ive heard it feeds the microbes and helps with oxygen to the roots. the soil comes with pearlite in it but i add about a half to a full solo cup more (3 gallon cloth pots)
I've been reusing my ocean forest soil for the past 3 or 4 grows, i just keep it topped up with organic amendments and microbes
it's not too hot in the first 3 weeks?
@@curiousbystander9193 i think it depends on what ur growing honestly. Ocean forest is quite a hot soil but most strains seem to handle it better than others in my experience
@@curiousbystander9193never was for me. ive done the paper towel method and planting seeds directly in the pot. always worked fine.
I use half o.f. half happy frog and it's perfect for my autos and I just top dress once at 1month plus recharge
I grow in my ukrainian black garden-soil and a little wormcastings and mycoryzzae, no perlite or extra aeration.
Never have problems with my micronutrients 😊 much love guys!

Just make sure that you have a lot of good bacteria in the soil , so the bad one have a bad time growing)
If i have pests outdoors, i spray the leafs with a 3:1 ratio Kombucha-vinegar/Water
Worked with every acid-loving plants so far, hope that I helped someone)😁
Thanks for Sharing!
Ukrainian soil must have so much metals in it😂 . Bullet cartridges and shrapnel. Sorry I had to but SLAVA UKRAINIA!
For my first 3 grows, I used peat-based soil. I switched to Coco/perlite/hydroton in autopots about 2 years ago and haven't had a reason to try anything else.
I found the best ratio 1 quarter worm castings 1 quarter coco 1 quarter perlite and 1 quarter compost it works magic everytime
Do you still feed synthetics with this mixture? I’m thinking of giving soil a go again and this seems like a great mixture!
Loyal to the soil 🤘🪴💚
🤘
I used to be until I discovered the benefits of cocoa coir, perlite, worm castings and Gaia Green 4-4-4 All purpose and Bloom with more Bloom top dressed before flower. I get bigger plants with cocoa
Subcool and Coot's have decent super soil recipes. Another great show dudes. Why does everybody always say anaerobic is bad? The anaerobic bacteria enrich the wood substrate with nitrogen through fixation, thus enabling deadwood decomposition by fungi. Every outdoor hole I have spongy wood (hugelkulture) in the bottom. Green carbons then super soil mix. Clones need shallower hugelkulture mounds.
its when the anaerobic over populates that it is a problem.
Scotty told me the same! I never got to harvest without several additives. Time wasted figuring out, thanks Scotty
I wish I could show you my 5 plants I've got growing now they just started into there 6th week of Bloom stage permanent marker, gg#4,alein og,hell fire og and sour diesel blimburn seeds I gotta water every morning 😂 absolutely sick ass plants
you can show them off on our new website realgrowlab.com/
OK I’m doing my first grow. I’m using happy frog soil and flora nova veg and flora. Nova bloom, and everything is coming out perfect. My blueberry cupcake is growing past the lights and the buds are super frosty.!❤
I been using the flora nova veg and bloom. you didnt say it but feedings should also include 3mL-5mL CalMag. Once the plant is in flowering stage week3-4 you can feed, "open sesame" its an early stage bloom booster. week5/flower stop all CalMag. So week5-8 feed, Beastie Blooms"...both foxfarm products.
@@PublicGoat86 sorry!, I forgot to mention the cal-mag! Yes that too!
I like heavier living soil. I just try to minic nature if i can. The light ones are good though too.
Hey Scotty, thanks so much for the videos….Always enjoyable and informative. I have a question: what would you say to a 50-50 mixture of cocoa and organic compost? Assuming 100 gallon galvanized containers, buried halfway in, drill the holes in the bottom with 1 inch of rock? The bottom of the hole would have quarter inch chicken wire to keep out any crazy little burrowing thieves. But really interested in what you think about a 50-50 mixture of cocoa and organic compost. Thanks bro.
Coco.. period!
100%
Iv grown organic several times with soil and coco and both mixed but the best quality comes with soil as the main ingredient. The air with the coco is amazing for root growth but the best quality comes with soil in my experience. I use iguana juice with some dry amendments like bat guano and ash.
Fox Farm Ocean Forest and Dr Earth. ( and Recharge ) ! Haha😎
Ocean forest is shit. Full of wood chips.
@@timothykappel198 Works for me.
@@timothykappel198 i have purchased 20 bags in the las year, no wood chips
@@timothykappel198 They break down through the season.
Love ya work.......actually your on another level thank you 😊
Thank You!
There's about 4 to 5 weeks of nutrient charge in Ocean forest you can use advanced nutrients sensi cal Xtra at 2ml per liter to round it off
Man, i love that i found this channel. I would love to be able to pick this guys brain for a few minutes. So much knowledge. 😮
come join us on our new website realgrowlab.com/
@@ScottyReal420 i just tried to make account, made me fill in a password twice and never created account. gave up
Ocean Forest what i use, when it runs out of nutrients out because the pot is too small , if a 3 gallon pot won't last 4 months try 5 or 7 gallon pots, and you can lightly feed after 4 weeks as a preventative measure ..if you don't know how to feed in soil you won't be any good with coco or hydro ..
I use my compost, top soil, mushroom compost, green sea grass, coconut husk medium. Through vege stage add a little water blood and bone and flowering use orchid flowerer, happy smoking if you do this.
best entertainment information commercial I've watched all day, thanks.
peat bat and fish
Our pleasure!
I start in mother Earth soil then up pot into coco but leave the soil plug. So it's like 25soil and 75 coco and perlite. All mother Earth. Then advanced nutrients ph perfect after. Works wonders. Up to 3 times a day water.
Watching Scotty talk about DWC has me grinning. That's how I grow and he's right, it's like a dragster. All the fuel all the time!😂😂😂
Recharge is the real deal!
I believe in a water only soil or organics in general. Keeping that moisture level right is key. Sure dont want any runoff of nutrients
I stir up Fox Farm Happy Frog and ocean forest and Coco Loco and I use coast of Maine organic top dressing with a spider farmer SE 7000 4 * 4 and yes of course I have raw silica and recharge estimation point..
Sounds great!
Question? I have always grown in soil, ran my own super soil for years. However I am intrigued with your grow dots and Canna Coco. So to the question, when starting a seedling in canna, should I go with a liquid nutrient or jump strait in with the dots? THANKS, im in Colorado too Cheers
Recharge turned my grow right on track plants were not taking up nutrients right!
that with dr earth were looking like we’re get something good now 😊
Hell Yeah, I hope you grow some dank.
I think the perfect media is, the one you're comfortable with. For me that's RDWC.
I totally agree with this!
They say you can't overwater coco but don't leave a big plant to sit in it overwise it looses support. Iv had one fall over. They do microbes for DWC.I believe Orca from the company that does great white is for water culture. 1 of the 3 advanced nutrients do may be water culture if I remember correctly.
Good show scotty!!!
More to come!
Canna coco and sensi coco line easy and works great
never miss a vid. since finding you i look forward to your next, ive been in the game for 13 years so old school like yourself, im a soil grower and will never change, all about the taste ;] i use BAT SPECIAL SOIL and never ph... tried em all but this is the best imo. also a tip for soil growers, buy insect frass soil conditioner and top dress start veg and then again start bloom, trust me u will see results :}
Promix hp and dr earth rock my grow
So I’m just trying this new thing..for me.. 5 gal bucket the first 10” fox farm ocean forest then separated by a plastic insert (ups a daisy) and I drilled extra holes so the roots can grow through… then the bottom half I have a 4” round bubbler and nutrients. I also added two 3/4” pvc pipes one on each side of the plant about 2” from the side of the bucket two inches above the soil and 2” below the plastic separator going into the bottom nutrient area for fresh air to pass through. (Got the idea from Build a soil guys)All nutrients general hydroponics.. So far day 12 and my plants have tripled in size and girth.. I totally see a huge difference. I’m also doing c02 . If all goes as well as I hope I’ll post videos in the future.
coco and peat are considered inert because they do not contain any nutrition until they break down.
Hydro uses clay or rockwool or coir just to displace the amount of water we use to not use.
I used to grow DWC and now use pro mix with the same hydro nutrients I use AN and have great results
🤘
Mother Earth Coco 70/30 Love It......
Agree😊 I start in soil though then move to coco. All mother Earth. Advanced nutrients as my nutes
i switched to organic,...Happy Frog to start seeds. Then Coast of Maine Platinum cut 2:1 with Promix BX. veg love it use Mykos and Recharge. PH 6.5 water...Then will feed with Giai Green Products
Canna Coco, perlite, worm castings, and dry amendments
sounds nice and easy.
Fox farms ocean forest, sensi grow/bloom , great white, and sweet raw is what i used when i was growing. I used to drill holes roughly half inch through the sides of my 10gal grow pots for air to the roots also.
Thanks for sharing
An inertial substrate is generally considered to be a mineral substrate regardless of whatever nutrition level might be in it for instance perlite vermiculite sand these are all mineral substrates Pete and Coco are not inert they're organic substrates they decompose
Hydro, easier than you think & super fast growth + no pests! 🤘🏼
Coco coir with HFF and an auto water system for the win. 🌱💚🌱💚🌱💚🌱💚
Make sure to keep an eye on the run off. I let mine get outa hand and it screwed me.
Better to have too much run off than too little.
scotty i remember late 1994 when hydro weed showed up where i was it was so much better the anything we ever had before but the guy growing it would lose full crops like you was saying with pump problems
Pump fail and air stones clog.
The correct term would be "find the best grow medium" when referring to a singular type of substance or material used for growing plants. "Media" is the plural form of "medium."
rockwool or coco have been best
For me . I’ve been running in 6x6 cubes but I’m going to switch to coco in 3 gallon pots for
Cost reasons . Rockwool has become crazy expensive. I grow top feed hydro in a sterile environment.
Water temps are not that big of a deal. Had good dwc runs with no water cooling at all. 3%hydrogen peroxide. 4 to 5 ml per gallon will keep out the root rot and algae. Has worked well for me. Always been curious about the coco. May try it in the future. Looks promising
I use FF happy frogs. Usually dont feed until week 3 or so
Screw bone meal....use Oyster flour.....as you add a sprinkle of Epsom salts (magnesium) you mix the Oyster flour (crushed organic calcium) into your soil as you "make your custom soil" I used to buy oyster shells and crush them myself but since finding it in "flour" form saves a lot of work!!!
I buy crushed oyster shells from my local feed and seed store (I'm rural) and grind them into powder in an old coffee grinder. Oyster shell flour for pennys a pound.
I buy them for my chickens anyway, so might as well repurpose them! Just have to watch out so it doesn't get locked up into calcium carbonate. Use low ppm water only!
I'm a Pro Mix ab with added perlite is my favorite dwc is crazy but very temperamental and requires alot of attention.
💯
Super soil mixed with clean coco coir
💪
* Perlite will provide all of the drainage one will ever need! Why complicate it with such a "delicate" medium?
What.... no one's ever heard of Perlite?
Perlite is way too fine.....course vermiculite holds both air and water and helps create soil that easily absorbs oxygen....which is what your root system needs
Perlite can be a great way to save money on media, but I like straight canna coco myself
There is rough perlite that comes in large pieces, way way bigger than the stuff in Ocean Forest or Prosoil HP. Just saying.....in my opinion, vermiculite sucks. Like I said, though, it's just MY opinion.
I hear so many good things about Recharge but it’s very expensive. Do you guys think the price will come down ever?
Big question... I live where iron ore falls off the trains, can those work the same as clay growers pellets?
Coco is also easier to maintain proper ph. Biggest issue i found with peat was with ph.
I will always grow DWC but I don't have a external res tank. With allows for each plant to be its own environment
I didn't even know they advertise it as a no need to add nutrients soil lol. I just added full doses of nutrients, and my plants are OK. No nutrient burn.
OF with Dr Earth and recharge works very well for me.
Thanks Scotty! You've confirmed my decision to switch from an organic peat mix to Coco.
Hell yeah, let me know how it goes.
@@ScottyReal420 will do!!
Do you only use coco or it it better to use coco and Worm casting?
Great episode, thanks guys. I like fox farm ocean forest and bottle nutes for moms, I like the retention and control. For workin girls I like coco loco with grow dots and recharge, of course, no other way lol
Good stuff!
Has anyone tried growing weed kratky style? It really works for leafy greens and tomatoes
how do you properly charge your coco coir? or do you buy it charged? how do you know it will work fine?
You buffer coco with cal mag but I would consider charged to have nutrition in it and you would have to buy it that way or mix you own.
ok ty. so i can just but a lightly buffered one and it will do just fine i guess@@ScottyReal420
Promix not coco! Many plants don't like being soaked 24/7! To each their own though, learning the hard way is still learning!
What about Hydroponics?
Canna Coco and Masterblend for the win. Don’t get much simpler and complete than Masterblend .
I grow in 3 in neoprene pucks in a 6" pvc pipe... zero media...
Any tips
I just bought grow dots ,what is the recharge for?
Recharge is a life saver no doubt.
Hell Yeah, glad to hear it!
I have lots of clay here., I add a small fish to the plant area.
