Just wanted to say that your channel is one of many things that made me want to become a "diesel mechanic", so now I'm at a company working on Scania buses, some Volvos too. This is in Sweden so no peterbuilt or CAT really

@@AdeptApe I really like it at the moment, I'm more educated towards hydraulic diesels for wheel loaders and such but sometimes you don't get exactly what you want

We have some Kalmar machines in Seattle and its really hard to find maintenance info on some of their older top handlers (for containers)
I'm at the point I can tear down a c15 and rebuilt it in 23 minutes with this man's tutorials great explanation 👍 on all your uploads keep it up

I'm in the Philippines, middle of nowhere and recently bought a 6KW diesel genset; there is no-one in this area that works on diesel engines because the majority of vehicles and gens run on gas. So I need to get on the learning curve in terms of maintenance and rectification. I love the pace and delivery of this course, well done for a good job!

I figured this out changing valve stem seals on a Mercedes OM617- great example of a simple and iconic diesel engine design.

Well done again. Ive been at this since 1969 and this is a very well done refresher.
I have just finished my diesel mechanic apprenticeship recently and am diagnosing trucks on my own now. Of course my mentor is still in the shop around me if I ever have any questions. But I just want to thank you so much for these videos because they have helped me get a better understanding of these engines so that I dont have to annoy my mentor with a billion questions all the time (even though he loves talking about stuff). Thank you Sir and I look forward to any videos you have coming out in the future =]
My C15 is in the shop now for worn valves. Scheduled an overhead adjustment, couldn't get the feelers under the rocker properly, which lets you know the valve stem was too high! Could have been bad if wasn't caught. Thanks for the video!
I have C-12, I went in for bad injector and rack adjustment. Found 2 broken valve springs, worn out rod bearings, 2 cam lobes 25% , camshaft, 2 locked up rocker rollers. Lol

Thank you for taking the time to explain the concept SLOOOWLY thus allowing for good intake and processing of information and reducing the brain combustion caused by excess information. I too have a dog named Buddy. Also, I am thinking about switching careers. In my younger years I used to be interested in how the human mind and body function. As I got older I became interested in how things work and began to evolve in a completely different direction. I began searching youtube for diesel engine concepts and found myself enjoying your videos. You do a great job at explaining complex topics in a way that is easy to understand. I would say this is pre 101 diesel engines. It gets a little more difficult when fuel injection systems are explained. I haven't worked in the industry for more than ten years and at that time there were four basic systems: unit injectors (Detroit and some Caterpillar), pressure timed (Cummins), injection pumps inline and rotary for many kinds of engines, and of course HEUI ( hydraulics electronic unit injectors) which were found in Caterpillar, international, and Ford power-stroke. All of them use some sort of fuel system to inject high pressure atomized fuel into the cylinder using a cam of sorts but HEUI's do not use a cam for high pressure injection but instead use high pressure hydraulic oil for injection. Today diesel engines are quieter using some sort flame timing to eliminate that diesel knock. And of course soot has been a major topic of concern and technologies to lower soot levels.
I been looking for informative material that doesnt sound like a foreign language. I dont have a lot of mechanical experience with diesel engines and dont know a lot of technical terms and this KISS method type style definitely makes it easy to understand

Good video with one exception... the reason a gas engine's head is not flat has nothing to do with compression ratios. A gas engine's piston is usually flat or domed outward while a diesel engine piston is usually carved out with a cone shape in it. It has more to do with how the spark travels from the spark plug through the mixture and how it buns than compression. It's the whole reason behind the Hemi engine. You could change the compression ration much cheaper and easier by changing the connecting rod length to alter the amount of space between the piston and head at TDC..

This is great stuff! I actually understand quite a bit now. I didn't know what a cam shaft did before and how the cylinder head/valves functioned etc.

Keep it up! I just bought a 97 7.3. Has a few issues. I'm learning a lot of the fundamentals of diesel and I appreciate it! I'm a union millwright and work on gas and steam turbines in power plants so this is new territory for me!

I love your channel and educational videos. I started a diesel technology course but struggled with some things because it wasn't "dumbed down" enough for me. Not that I'm not intelligent, it's just that my strong points are were always linear subjects.... anything that gets you from point a to b with the simple use of logic. This is a vast course with so many components and you have helped me keep interest and understand so much more. I appreciate you.

Need to explain the function of the roto coil. Some engines use roto coils and some don't. Make sure you talk about duration and over lap.
Why exhaust duration is longer (most often) than intake duration.
A 3406E and up is a high cam engine. Over head cam sets on top of the valves. 1693, 1674, 1676 Cat truck engines. The advantage of a push rod engine is, if the piston contacts the valve. Hopefully the push rod will bend and not cause severe internal damage. Not always true but it is the weakest link in the valve train. Have seen 3406E exhaust rocker arms with stress fractures on the bottom side. Where the piston was pushing the valve closed faster than the spring could return. Of course this was a over speed situation caused by a bad steering wheel holder.

Ever considered becoming a classroom teacher at one of those Tech schools? People could really learn a lot from you. Even those who’s been in the trade for years would learn something from you.
You need an instagram page as well Josh. We could see pics around the shop and communicate with you if we run into trouble or have questions. Personally I’d come by the shop if I had problems if I knew where it was.
