I did start learning to play classical guitar many years ago, but because of my work as a university professor, lessons ended just half a year after. Now, after more than 40 years, I'm picking up classical guitar lessons with my Masaru Matano 400 (1974). Ms. Thu Le's lessons are indispensable. I am already indebted to you Thu Le, not just because of the lessons but also because of your exceptionally admirable personal touch. You are a very precious gift to the universe.

There is nothing wrong with "no nail" in classical guitar. Wrong if you use the nail technique when you play without nail, of course your guitar will sounds like s***. If you play no nail your finger need to "push" the string toward the soundboard to produce sound, instead of "pluck" the string when playing with nail. The result is a very round, mellow and intimate sound with good volume and resonant.

Hi Thu Le, just want to say I take everything you say and do very serious. After watching this some time ago, I have been taking better care of my nails. I'm not a classical guitar player but I enjoy watching you. I do play my favorite songs on my acoustic guitar without a pick. I have been talking better care of my nails and it has made some improvement in my playing. I also take a multivitamin every day to help keep them strong. I was talking two a day that's what it said on the bottle to do but they got to hard and began cracking . I have never been able to hold a pick. It was very depressing when i was younger trying to rock out and the pick would fall.lol I would make holes in my picks but it didn't help even super glued the pick to my finger. it didn't work. Now I'm glade i couldn't use a pick because now i have so much control over the strings that you cant get with a pick. I love playing without a pick now especially when i seen how fast you could play. Inspiration comes from the strangest places sometimes. Thanks for being that inspiration for me. Your fan James p. back in Shady Ville OH.

Thanks for this advice Thu. I used to think my nails were pretty strong but I never really grew them long until I took up classical guitar. Now I do indeed treat my nails as my tools - trouble is those tools do gardening, DIY home improvement stuff as well play the guitar! So just as they are getting to a length which is about right they break - or more often get chips and nicks in the edges. I have some of the files you have (the Glass one you received from GSI is marketed under the name "SoundFile") but I will get some of the papers you use and maybe try the Almond Oil - before bed sounds good - certainly better than before gardening!

Excellent. Thank you Thu. I too use sand paper for filing and buffing my nails. The problem I have is the shapes of my nails. My m finger got into a little accident where the finger tip got caught in the gap of two panes of a garage door as it was closing causing a reshape of the nail and it now permanently points upwards a bit, so the sound is a little flat and weak. The nail of my a finger has a bit of a ridge (hadn't noticed this deformity until I started to play again few years ago) that can cause a sharp and thin sound. The difference is the tones becomes even obvious and annoying with tremolo. I have been trying to shape the nails in different ways to minimise the difference in tones but it is far from perfect. Do you have any advise ? Thank you Thu.

Great tutorial!.The only issue I have is not with the tutorial but with my extremely weak nails. That is why I play with artificial nails and I have been struggling with tone production because as we all know nothing can replicate the tone/sound from the biological material which our natural nails are made off.Fake nails are to metallic sounding and make a lot of undesirable harsh sounds like clicking, tapping , ect (specially at higher speeds like in tremolo).

As for men, it is quite impossible to wear long nails without breaking them. We are so brutish, working with tools, timbers, cement, bricks. At work also physical work is always for men. Repairing all kind of stuff, renovating flat or houses, bicycle, motorcycle, always something to do. Plus we practice a lot of sports. In short always exposing the nails. And if you break one nail, you stay 2weeks without playing. Too bad!

It is not advisable to use back and forth movement on your nails. They are more likely to break due to cracks that may appear and/or be infested with fungus. You want to do it in one direction only. Maybe, you would also want to use an antiseptic after each procedure (before using oil). And the supplement to use is Biotin.
