- Ravenna Whistle Blow 10-7-2023.
In early October, 2023, we decided to take a trip up to the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation for their annual whistle blow. This year had over 60 different whistles that we all got to hear on steam. Some sound better than others, but most importantly, everyone was able to have a good time if they decided to come.
Since this is a really long video, I will make timestamps for everyone. That way if you want to jump to a particular manifold, you can easily do that:

I met a lot of good people, made a ton of new friends, had a wonderful time, and cannot wait to come back next year!
Enjoy the many different whistles with the Ravenna Whistle Blow 2023!
there is so much awesomeness in this video.. thanks for sharing.. 😯
46:05 this unknown 5 chime i believe is a JNR 5 chime or also known as the Japanese national railways 5 chime
That Southern Crosby 3 chime on manifold 1 reminded me so much of TVRM 610’s whistle from the 90’s. It sounds exactly the same!
1:25:32 that 5 chime has to be my favorite whistle of all in this video.
19:57 2:25 🔥🔥🔥🤩🤩🤩
19:57 sound amazing! It reminds me of dolly wood, or Cass Scenic RR.
It sounds like hiro from thomas and friends
My favorite whistles 4:31 1:47 2:19 2:50 5:06 7:26 17:57 2:19 34:41
3:51 Hancock 3 chime
Mines is the first one
42:33 sounds like the ghost train
Superb video
35:06 DM&IR Yellowstone Hancock 3 chime
That would be correct
The Frisco Long Bell 3 chime is my favorite whistle, we had one down at SDC in Branson Mo about a year back.
53:09 Frisco T54 Mountain Hancock 3 chime
6:25 this whistle sounds very similar to EBT 17’s whistle
I would love to see that hancock 3 chime on 3985 once it is restored
At 2:02, that FEC 3 chime sounded very identical to TVRM’s V&SW 3 chime.
Your right, I had seen 4501 with the whistle , and it sounds like it!
34:45 I do strongly believe that is a Lima 5 Inch 5 Chime. The 5-inch variation was a specific whistle made by Lima for their shay division, most commonly found on their Pacific Coast Shay designs and would come stock on them. Sierra 3 is a good example of one of those whistles, this Lima 5 Chime is at a lower pressure from what it seems, so it is a little difficult to compare. The whistle structure itself looks to almost perfectly resemble said whistle though. Hope this helps on identifying the whistle!! :)
It looks more like a jnr 5 chime
It was a Lima 5” Shay Model.
@@C.J.Holdenit looks like a jnr 5 chime thanks to the valve on the left of it
Awesome Compilation! Great to be able to hear so many unique and intriguing whistles. One thing is that UP 5 Chime a Star Brass? Because if so it doesn't look or sound like one. The bowl of that same whistle is identical to CB&Q bowls
It could’ve been a CB&Q that for some reason ended up on UP but I don’t know for sure. I just know the owner said it was UP. Depends on who one asks
Nkp 587 whistle was in the 2 patch of whistle on the right 20:30
That’s a UP 5 chime
No it is not that nkp 587 whistle
@@Valdorxsnowpiercer read the description
I thought for sure the UP 5 chime would sound high pitched like the CofG 5 chime from Manifold 1.
@@T128Productions I believe that the COFG 5 chime and the UP 5 chime was mixed up. The whistle at 5:25 that is labeled as a COFG 5 is most definitely a UP Star Brass 5. Pretty easy to tell due to the higher pitch, relatively short bell, bowl shape, and the specific lever shape that is typically associated with Star Brass Mfg. Co. 5 chimes.
Cool
1:23:34
Why does it sound like GTW 4070?
It’s probably because they are both CB&Q 5 chimes.
At 8:37 and 12:52, how did the Kentucky Steam Heritage Corporation receive K&T 10’s Southern whistle? I surely thought TVRM would’ve had it in storage.
The whistle is privately owned
Hmm.. just a small critique, list the yellow card that each whistle stood above. Itd make it even easier. Id absolutely LOVE to hear that DM&IR 3 chime on 300 psi.
#3 is way underpowered with steam. That size usually needs a 3" diameter pipe going to it.
Yes, I have all sizes of whistles. My favorites are the 10 inch and 12 inch diameter chimes. They require 2 1/2 and 3 inch size pipe supplies. This big Lunkenheimer chime sounds weak. Either the pressure or feed pipe are too small. I have blown my big whistles with steam thru 3 inch piping at 150 psi. Wow, everyone is impressed. I won't take my biggies to a toot event with inadequate piping. I must make a good impression.
How come some whistles on the manifolds were blown significantly more than others? For example, on manifold 6, the N&W hooters were blown constantly and the chime whistles were almost ignored? What whistle was being blown at 1:37:00? Only got to hear it once, and the chewbacca sounding hooters were going almost nonstop.
I honestly have no idea. It’s probably just personal preference. The N&W hooters had a bunch of foamers hogging them. I hated it too. And some in the case of the one in the time stamp needed lower pressure to operate
What were all the 6 chimes present? Lower pressures made them difficult to identify
I have an entire list of all the whistles in the description
Oh sorry lad @@stevensainerailfanproductions
@@mr.sir. no you’re good.
Does the buckeye 3 chime whistle have a similar whistle to walt disney world railroad
In fact, the Walt Disney World RR almost exclusively uses Buckeye 3 Chimes.
Some whistles are different in the walt Disney world railroad because the Roy o. Disney has a Baldwin 3 chime whistle @@Railfan105.
Is one of the whistles off the 587?
No
@@stevensainerailfanproductions too bad! Would have love to hear it!
