  • It was the first royal wedding of 2023. The celebration was simply magnificent and lasted the whole week! The daughter of the Sultan of Brunei, Princess Azemah, married in the most luxurious palace in the world. Everything was glittering in gold and diamonds. But this wedding has also become one of the most controversial in royal life. Why do many common people think that the princess chose the wrong man? And why are social media users outraged by this alliance?

My late maternal grandparents were first cousins. They lived in different countries and their fathers wanted to tie their families together as back then, siblings and cousins who lived in different countries become estranged as travelling overseas were very costly and risky. They met just a few days prior to their wedding and lived a peaceful life with 2 very healthy, very smart girls who are are very kind and loving people and also successful in their careers.

What is stated here is correct from the viewpoint of biology (genetics). Marriage is discouraged between first cousins due to the probability of increasing occurrence of genetic defects. Probabilities deal with possible occurrences so there is no guarantee that just because it did not surface among children of first cousins, it will not happen in other cases. But the possibility is greatly increased in offspring of first cousin marriages.

it is indeed legal to marry your first cousin (in Islam) although it is not "encouraged" especially if the fathers are siblings. Not encouraged does not mean Islam opposed or prohibited this.
as per my opinion, love is something we cannot stop and further more there may be times when there is limited people to marry.. (esp when you found "the right person")..
however, we can make duua.. that Allah will protect them from having a problem later on. So.. let Him take care of the rest. As long as we do not do the wrong thing. Wallahualam

Consanguineous marriage such as this are common with the very reasons are to keep the wealth within the family and to keep the monarchic-noble blood.
Or, perhaps, no one man dares to propose marriage to her due to her status as a princess and being super wealthy.
However, biologically speaking, there is a physical and mental health risk for the descendants.

Even in America it is not socially acceptable but what can you do. These days families are separated by years and miles, generations of not knowing each other, a chance meeting of cousins falling in love before actually knowledge of lineage. It happens as it did to my daughter having just divorced from a toxic marriage, found understanding and kindness from a work colleague in different states from where they were born. She became pregnant, before I had learned, oddly they found their blood connections before informing their parents. They have two Beautiful healthy daughters, both very bright and creatively talented. The Princess, at her age will need to take precautions and should re-consider having children, maybe leave it to her siblings.

We are Bruneian. We don't have any issues with this kind of marriage. We believe in Qadha and Qadr. Allah's plan is always perfect. So this marriage we believe is Allah's will for both of them. If it's not due to Allah's will, this won't happened. It may not perfect for you. But perhaps it's perfect for Allah swt.
