Life is mysterious and wonderful. I'm lucky enough to have experienced a number of these things. yea as someone who has some experience in programming and certifications I can say the problem will be a non issue because it will just be worked around. many huge issues have been worked around over time that the general public never even knows about. they are just problems in programming that are solved or avoided. and will continue to be. no need to worry virtually every consumer device is not going to be affected. and virtually all servers that are supporting modern infrastructure will be fine in one way or another. anything legacy well. either its under a maintenance contract with microsoft if its windows based or uses windows. or its open source software/operating systems in unix/linux and will have fixes from the community. and anything that niche that has no support well. its just gonna have to change over. its been decades since 64 bit operating systems have been in use.
You're talking about the 2038 epoch time right? With Y2K, it was almost always just bugs in the software caused directly from the programmer, and easy to fix. It wasn't like it was an issue with your OS, or the libraries you rely on, or the C standard library, or the underlying data-type that must be agreed between every library, etc. As it's an issue with C standard library and UNIX-based systems, it's prevalent in nearly every piece of software ever written. If you rely on a library that uses 32-bit timestamp in one of its API parameters, there's nothing you can do. Especially if the library is closed-source, or it's used by other libraries (and so it would break libraries that depend on it), etc. There is *no* work-around there. Specifically for 32-bit embedded environment (which are common, e.g. in cars, planes, GPS, etc), there's not really a solution. Anyway it might not affect the general public, but it will effectively kill many systems and software, and I bet it will be a long & painful for a lot of companies that rely on legacy software (like govt, banks, servers, traffic/air industry, email systems, etc). But yeah, I agree that the general public might not notice it, but then again, a lot of software/hardware will probably go down on that day.
