    Love to see the Linjett 39 win! ❤ Family Gustavsson fully deserve some recognition for their really fine family cruisers throughout the years and lately their latest models are breathtakingly beautiful. They are a very common sight in the Stockholm archipelago, specifically in the outer islands, and the reason is that if you own one you tend to use it quite a lot.

    These "European Yacht of the Year" awards are a bit like "I scratch your back, you scratch mine". I guess the biggest criteria winning one is a model of a company with a big advertising budget as coincidentally the jury consists of representatives from yachting magazines. Already enough of bad smells?

    • @PlanetSailOnline
      @PlanetSailOnline  Před rokem +20

      Simply not true - I served as a jury member for 10 years and the effort that goes into selecting the right boat on its merits alone take many days of sea trials, hours and hours of debate and discussion as well as having very strict rules for nominees and judges alike. Every one of the judges is an enthusiastic and experienced sailor in their own right. Together they represent a huge pool of experience and expertise. I’ve been there, I’ve seen it and I’m sorry but you’re simply wrong and the suggestion of bad smells is unfair and unfounded

    Thanks much Matt and Toby. It's refreshing to see some of the new ideas in the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 55, Sunbeam, etc. The Beneteau First 36 may look plain but the performance sounds outstanding. That all said, much more interested in multihulls here.
    It's definitely good that recycling is being taken more seriously. Aluminum is highly recycled.

  • @bobcornwell403
    @bobcornwell403 Před rokem

    The winning sailboats are interesting in that they are highly performance oriented. This means they can sail fast, even upwind.
    The price for this is very vulnerable appendages, such as the rudder(s) and keel. They are short and deep. A keel or rudder strike at speed can mean a disastrous repair bill.

    I’ve owned several boats and been sailing for 45 years. I’ve rigged and delivered boats. Apart from the gee whiz of new boats and techs what the boating industry needs is an approach where every piece of every boat is not unique. To be accessible and affordable boat manufacturers need production, service schedules and warranties/ Hyundai changed motoring - when will their boating counterpart emerge?

We all have different desires and likes, and just as you and I may not like living in the same sort of house or going on the same sort of holiday, we can like different styles of boats. Oh, and my family started cat sailing in 1966 so I'm very well aware of their many merits.

    I'm all for more recyclable material but the idea that the owner of a thirty year old boat is going to be trading for a new boat, with the recycling of resin being a significant factor is laughable.

    • @donshackley5244
      @donshackley5244 Před rokem +1

      Agree, I suspect most buyers of new boats are selling a 5-10 year boat. More practically, the salvage value of a very older boat will be sufficient to have it removed from the water and scrapped. Will stop boats being abandoned (marinas are weary of boat owners doing a runner leaving behind an old GRP boat which will cost the marina to get rid of and recover the berth).

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn Před rokem

      @@donshackley5244 Which is why it's better to be able to recycle the materials, no? It means there's enough value left to make recycling worthwhile, AND new techniques are needed to make them recyclable.

    • @donshackley5244
      @donshackley5244 Před rokem

      @@LoanwordEggcorn Agreed, it always better to use materials or production processes that result in a potentially recyclable product. However, there is often a lot of green washing in this area. Big PR claims that the environment is being helped which will never be achieved in practice unless the recycling is economically as well as technically. Yachts are big expensive things to move to a recycling point ( which is unlikely to be near the expensive marinas/land that the yacht is in at time of disposal).

    • @LoanwordEggcorn
      @LoanwordEggcorn Před rokem

      @@donshackley5244 Agree there is much greenwashing, so I hope some actual improvements are being made. Also agree it's very difficult to actually recycle economically.
      However there are industries where recycling is a major part of how they work today: Lead acid batteries, some steel, some aluminum, some plastic, though less for plastic.
      I personally am interested in Aluminum hulls for recyclability and corrosion resistance.

    The ultimate "sustainability" behavior is to use what you got for as long as you can. Everything else is pretentious marketing strategies that follow moronic trends of an era. The only good thing about these is the fact that new technologies enter the court to compete with existing technologies. Some of these are here to stay, but not all.

    Not my kind of boat show. This was a manufacturer's show, not a boater's show. Very impersonal and certainly not geared to the average boater and their needs. Each builder cordoned off their boats to the general crowd, allowing only those who were first vetted to board.
    A lot of money was poured into displays, and the pressure to sell was palpable. I won't go again.

    When I see these "ships", I don't know if I cry tears of laughter or anger. Since the designers, the controllers have the dictation over the shipbuilding it is getting worse and worse. Attached spade rudders, with thin polyester shells and a polyurethane hard foam core, bolted keels and best of all a sail drive as a drive. Wonderful attachments to produce a marine emergency at the slightest collision. Where should this madness lead? In the past, functionality, safety and seaworthiness determined the shape. Today it is exactly the other way around. And the maritime press still gives this nonsense a platform, probably just to make ads business. One hand washes the other ?

    any boat that is not in the final color of gelcoat, that boat is crap. All boats today are arranged to look nice to the eye, and we know that this is not quality. After 5 years of polishing and damage, that boat has to be completely repainted, while gelcoat is better quality and more resistant, even after 20 years the gelcoat gives shine and quality.
