After 7 days of sailing with my family in the gulf islands, my adult daughter and I are watching this video as a refresher of the things she learned on the trip. It’s not so much teaching her to sail as much as reminding her of what she learned sailing as a kid. Thanks for posting.

Fabulous! I’m a newbie sailor who just purchased a Catalina 28... littlest “big boat” I could find. So far, it’s all engine and systems and setup. It is extremely helpful getting to watch someone else going through the thought processes I have when learning and to hear your commentary. I’m going to be replaying this over and over. Thank you both!

a suggestion: when releasing the genoa sheet, don't let it go loose, but wait for sail to back wind then 'walk' the clew across; less flapping/stress on sail, less sheets flying about to get fouled.... and can help move bow through the wind.

Sailing schools are only going teach you to work one winch at a time with you crew (other classmates). Learning to work both main winches at the same time like she is trying to do is not part of the certification or test. If you want to sail solo and learn to work both at the same time, you will have to learn on your own time like she is doing. If you are in the USA buy the book "Sailing Made Easy" off Amazon. That will be you class book to you to read and learn to pass the written exam.

I wrote that before the last bit, sailing is about confidence, worrying about other boats or being to remote from other people being to close to land or too far from land is all in your own head. I have two sons one freaks out if he sees rocks near the other when our little island country disappears over the horizon its just our own personal cross to bear we have to get used to it. Me I prefer fewer people which Is why I sail alone in remote places :)

The first boat I owned was a 50' motor yacht. I wasn't planning on buying such a large boat; it just happened that way. Everyone said I was crazy, that I should start much smaller. I had sailed and motored smaller boats some, the largest being 28 feet. But it just took some time, practice, study and patience to get things down. Once I got used to it, the 50' boat actually handled as easy, if not easier, than the smaller boats. And once I got used to the twin engines, docking became easier. People adapt to the situations they are put in if they have open minds. Alex did that wonderfully, and Dad helped to get her there. Thanks for the great sailing lesson!
