This is the best video Iâve ever seen comparing the different sweeteners and their effect on blood sugar and blood ketone levels
Dr. Berry and KetoConnect together. This is excellent.
Is coconut sugar ok to eat on keto? Does anybody know if there's a video like this about it?
It is not. It's just sugar.
LOL...really?
Was this about the sugar comment? If so, then yes. Coconut sugar is sugar. It has a lower GI than cane sugar, but it still spikes blood glucose.
Summary:
1. Sugar is subtly sweet. Ketones dropped and blood glucose level increased.
2. Stevia shows mixed results.
3. Allulose tastes good and does not affect ketones or blood glucose level. Bad GI distress though.
4. Sucralose is intensely sweet and does not affect ketones or blood glucose.
5. Erythritol tastes almost as good as Allulose and has similar/no effect on ketones and blood glucose, but also causes GI distress.
6. Monk fruit is not as sweet as sugar and has a vanilla hint (might have to use more for taste). It also safe for the Keto diet.
7. Xylitol is not worth consuming even though it tastes close to sugar. It negatively impacts ketones and blood glucose level. Mixed GI results.
8. Maltitol has a gummy consistency. It greatly impacts ketones and spikes blood glucose level.
9. Aspartame seems to be Keto-friendly and diabetic-friendly, but not necessarily healthy.
Open to corrections if needed. đ
Hey thanks that's really useful. I'll put that in my notes
Sucralose is the best one?
Perhaps sucralose is best for a keto eater, but it does have quite an aftertaste. Blech.
Excellent summation thank you! Wonder if all those sugar substitutes have an aftertaste.
Marianne Wade IMHO sucralose tastes very good in the flavored drops form, rather than taking it pure. For example my favorite sweetener of all are caramel sucralose drops, and I'm quite sensitive to the bad aftertaste some sweeteners have. That being said I have yet to try erythritol, I think that might be still a tastier option.
Stevia -> good
Allulose -> good, gastric distress
Sucralose -> good, people hate for no good reason
Erythritol -> good, second worst gastric distress after Allulose
Monk Fruit -> good, not as sweet as Stevia
Xylitol -> bad, tastes good
Maltitol -> very bad, basically sugar
Asparatame -> good, bad for health
Thank you. I was not watching all that. I knew someone had it for us to read â€â€
I'm so lucky to have bought stevia instead of the other ones xd
Awe man! No more sugar free hard candy for me. It has maltitol in it. I never would have guessed!
I have been drinking diet Pepsi (Aspartame) for about 35 years or whenever they started using it in Pepsi. I'm 78 and the same weight as when I was 19 years old! My weight is great. My wife even thinks that I'm a bit on the thin side. All my friends who warned me about the dangers of Aspartame died by the age of 72. They started dying at the age of 65. They all suffered from obesity problems. What more can I say.
@@mikescott1029 Than you are an exception, not a statistic.

Poking fingers is actually easy if you use different fingers, and even different parts of that finger. Everyone should be doing it. At least 2 or 3 times daily. Basically, as long as you dont puncture in that spot too soon for it to heal. You can also use your palm.
Sugar 1:59
Stevia 3:30
Allulose 4:18

Thank you for this. I am a diabetic trying out sugar subtitues and wasting my time...lol You eliminated ones I hadn't tried and pointed to ones I didn't know about. So glad I happened on your video.
Even though I dont watch your channel and am not Keto, as someone with SIBO I have found this particular video invaluable. Thank you for testing all these substances in your body and giving us the real data on how they responded. Thanks for doing the work.
Keto has been my saviour.
I was 270lbs exactly 10 weeks ago and today im 209lbs.
Incredibly i lost 22lbs in first 2 weeks.
Ive slowed down to a couple pounds per week but its all good.
I was doing no carbs one week then 25g the next and it worked for me.
Im a 47 year old man and im back into clothes ive not worn in 5 years.
Thanks keto.
Congratulations ! I bet you feel so good !

@@BricktopsPigs YES, I know what you mean .... even though I have not ever been really overweight, there was a time that I gained about 15 lbs - Iâm only 5â - and even though I wasnât seriously overweight, I just didnât feel comfortable in my own skin - couple fun facts Iâve heard about weight - donât know for men, but for women, 8 lbs. is a whole size difference ! Also, I have heard from a couple of sources that for every pound you lose, it takes 4 pounds of pressure off your knees - youâre young, but believe me, you want good knees - also, the younger you are when you lose weight, the better condition your skin is in to snap back after the loss - so try not to âyo-yoâ too much ! Sucrolose adversely affected my heart, for 2 years of using it, heart palpitations that got worse and more severe over time, exhaustion, light headed.. docs couldn't figure it out. Stopped using Sucrolose ie Splenda.. symptoms faded away, I never felt as strong after that episode either.. bad stuff imo
hope you tried some ubiquinol and ribose to heal your heart
Glad you are feeling better
Stevia can cause heart and kidney issues with too much consumption too
The reality is that these alternative sweeteners are either too new to have been rigorously studied, or there's just not enough independent interest in doing so, and we aren't really going to know all the long-term effects of using them for many years. We certainly cannot rely on the conclusions reached by the companies who make them, as we know historically that food manufacturers will lie, cheat, and steal to make a profit. The best bet is to limit your use of all of them until long-term studies show them to be definitively safe.
@@migeru243 I feel the same, there are so much money involved that you cannot really rely on what these companies are saying. People knock fruits lately, but are ok with these things. Why? Yes, an apple has some sugar, but good things as well. I know it is not fashionable to say these days, but some balance does not hurt.
Thanks both u guys! This is one incomparably informative video! And it must have taken a huge effort by both of you to give us the data that you did! đđŒ

Awesome guys. My husband is diabetic and wore a continuous glucose monitor. We tested keto breads. Wow, most spiked his blood a lot! Aunt Millie was the best. If you just worried about keto (me) a lot of stuff is probably fine, but diabetes, wow. Itâs not always what you think! Good vid guys!
I thought I was crazy because the Akins candy makes my sugar go through the roof. Makes sense now, thank you đ
I'm so glad I found your channel. I was just diagnosed diabetic and it crushed me. I was thinking I'm never going to enjoy any foods again. But your channel has lifted spirits and I've learned a great deal of knowledge. Thank you
You can reverse your diabetes in months. Along with these great keto recipes channels, please look at videos by dr Jason fung, a kidney specialist and md that regularly reverses diabetes with keto and intermittent fasting and any video by butter Bob Briggs. The science is even better than the food videos! You can really understand what happens in your body and exactly how to reverse it.
My story; a month ago, my fasting blood sugar had climbed to 245. That is bad! With keto and intermittent fasting my fasting glucose is 101 and my glucose after a meal is 127! Normal post meal is anything under 140. You can eat amazing food, you can feel great and, even better, your diabetes does not have to progress! Good luck to you! Oh and I've dropped 13 lbs in the time that blood sugar and blood pressure has corrected itself.
Stick with it. My husband was off meds in a month and maintains a normal blood sugar with keto. You can do it!
Hi Mark, You are too young to be sick. workout, and follow a healthy lifestyle and you should be off of med soon. I joined a few "keto group" on facebook. and they are helping me a lot. be healthy by eating healthy
You can reverse it.
Mark, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 4 months ago. With low carb eating (no medication), I've been able to lower my blood glucose to normal numbers (within 3 months) as well as losing weight. Many people with diabetes are now eating low carb and seeing these benefits. It can be done!
Thanks for this! You're the only ones who did this! Really like take aways and related opinions/facial expressions!

there are a lot of low calorie sweeteners that negatively impact blood sugar levels
And if your sweetener has maltodextrin in it itâs impacting your blood sugar in a huge way. That stuff is worse then table sugar.

Oh, and PS. Xylitol is deadly to dogs. So if you use it, don't leave this lying around where they can get to it.
This needs to be at the top
It's deadly to all animals I belive!
only in LARGE amounts. research.
The lethal dose is 0.1g per kg of the dog's weight. 1 stick of gum can have .3-.4 g in it. So it's not that large a dose to kill.
I was really hoping they'd mention that. Especially since they have a dog themselves.
Clearly, this video is now the gold standard for keto sweetener tests.
Great video, this was exactly what I was looking for. I think I will get erythritol and monk fruit.
Thank you for this research. I'm curious about your blood types. Would you mind sharing that info? I'm B+ and went from 154 to 107 on a strict blood type regimen, but now I eat more relaxed to weigh 128.

I watched this again after 1.5 years of doing keto. Lost 36 lbs. 13 lbs to go.
I love this channel. Easy to understand - packed full of relevant information. Thank you for sharing.
So glad I saw this video...I really thought it was just me that got sugar spikes from maltitol. This was incredibly helpful, thanks!
Fantastic video. Iâve been doing a low carbohydrate diet since late 1999 and even though I am diabetic, keep my blood sugars mostly in the non-diabetic normal ranges. I now mostly use pure monk fruit as a sweetener, but have wondered about the blood sugar impact of some of the ones you tested. One note, when you are doing this kind of test donât forget about the dawn phenomenon. This is where your liver stores glycogen overnight and releases it in the early morning, so even though you have not yet eaten anything, your blood sugar can still go up. While you usually see the dawn phenomenon written about in connection to diabetes, it is a biological process that happens in all of us.
Glad to know that you have maintained your blood sugar levels. I am planning to use Monk Fruit as sugar replacement. Would you recommend it based on your experience?
Some early research on The Dawn Phenomenon was on US Vietnam soldiers that were held captive for years. They were kept in complete darkness for very long periods. They became so in tune with their body, that they could always tell when it was around 4- 6 am. Their bodyâs would tell them. Iâm diabetic and both Dawn Phenomena and âWaking Stressâ as my Dr from Johns Hopkins tells me. My sugars will rise in the early morning hours but I donât get up until later. After getting up (past the Dawn Phen) my sugars continue to rise.
Thanks for doing this guys. Very helpful. I have been on keto since March last year and have totally stayed away from sweeteners and the sweet taste as a whole. I have occasionally eaten sweet stuff but always mindful of the fact that it was a bit of treat. Iâm always scared of the slippery slope phenomenon whereby I once again embrace the sweet taste and start adding loads of sweeteners and yet feel dissatisfied. If I decide to try a sweetener, this video will be my starting point. Thanks for taking one for the team.
Thanks so much for taking one (or dozens) for the team!!!! I have used liquid Sucralose for years and after starting Keto and doing great with my new way eating I was hoping I wouldn't have to quit using my great sweetener!!!! Thanks again!

I am so glad you guys did this. I was not surprised with aspartame but it has been my experience that if I consume too much of it over time, my blood glucose is affected negatively and not only just after consumption but on overall readings throughout the day and night. I am glad to see monk fruit in the selections and was pleased with your results. Primal Edge Health uses it and swears it is the gold standard, so it is nice to see that he is right again. I was not surprised by maltitol but I was a little thrown off by xylitol so this will go on my ingredient watch list. Also, I love how consistent and methodical you two are with your experiments, so thanks again for another great video and take-aways.

This was amazing! It was so informative. I am glad I scrolled down after my search on monk fruit sweetener. I will try the Allulose as I will go for the closest taste to sugar and will not eat in that volume at one time to guard against GI distress.
Great work guys! Really appreciate how thoroughly you researched this for us!
Thank you for testing these products in this way. I consider myself to be quite on top of the sweetener industry. I use a Xylitol/Stevia blend in everything and recommend this to everyone. Thank you this helps so much. I'm trying ketone and I'm also a diabetic
This was interesting. I would like to see it done with insulin levels, which is probably impossible due to how hard it is logistically and financially to test this much. Many argue that even tasting sweets causes an insulin response, even if it doesnât cause a glucose spike. Maybe thatâs explains why glucose levels actually dropped after the some of the sweeteners. If it causes an insulin response, whatever glucose was in the blood was reduced by the insulin that was triggered by the body thinking it was eating sugar.
What you pointed out is CRITICALLY IMPORTANT to those of us who are obese and have hyperinsulinemia --Dr Fung Intermmitant fasting expert says that although no studies have been done on effect of sweeteners on insulin - None of the obese people who are substituting sugar with sweeteners BIG TIME are losing weight - so - perhaps just the taste of sweet triggers insulin response
@@selini7774 That's a fair point, although correlation does not always equal causation, as they say. It's not because obese people who substitute sugar with sweeteners are failing to lose weight that the sweeteners per se are to be held accountable. Often, overweight individuals, particularly Americans, will go out for fast food and choose a Diet Coke over a regular Coke, thinking it'll make them "healthier"; they'll then procede to consume 2400 calories through cheeseburgers, fries, milkshakes, etc. It's absolutely futile to replace sugar with sweeteners if you continue to gorge such inordinate, exorbitant amounts of ultra processed junk. I'd like to see the weight evolution of people who follow healthy diets yet consume sugary beverages recplace such beverages with sweeteners.
Just my two cents.
Was thinking the exact same - the blood glucose level drops seem to indicate an insulin spike, which means the sweeteners are putting the body into the fat-gain state and would explain why artificial sweeteners seem to stall weight loss in many people.
Xylitol is good to be used in ice cream you want to store for longer times in the fridge, it helps to avoid getting superhard icecreams as you get with Erythritol.
Thank you for doing this testing!
