Welcome back to the channel, and to this first episode in a new short series of vids called "SUB' RIDES" where I get to ride some of my subscriber's bikes.
This is a special one as it is the VERY FIRST time I have EVER ridden a Harley-Davidson!
Watch me lose my Harley virginity, on this Iron 883 Sportster!
Big thanks to Brian for the kind loan!

From my side of the pond..... it’s BMW and Goldwing riders that are too cool to wave back at ya. As a Harley rider I do try and wave at all riders. Funny reactions when I wave at a Moped type rider, they turn around to see who is he waving at? I think the way you described the purpose of that Harley was spot on. It is what it is, and a whole lotta fun and cool doing it.

haha I can just see the moped rider now! You probably made his day when he realised it was, in fact, HIM! haha

Really enjoyed that Rich! That sounded fantastic didn't it, I really really do need to get me a go on one of those - I can't tell you how many people have recommended a go on a Harley to me...seems like you're sold, and I suspect I would be quickly turned too. I was always firmly "anti cruiser" until I rode in (one of my more nattily titled "Readers Rides" episodes) Steve's Triumph Thunderbird - now my eyes have been opened and I suspect I'll love Harleys too.....look forward to your next vid on this one! ....."Sub' Rides" indeed.....

Good video from an fellow East Mids rider.
I have just part ex’d my Kwak z1000sx 2015 for one of these (2018 Iron 883 with 2950 miles on it) and absolutely love it. It has the stage 1 tuning kit already on (Vance & Hines exhaust) & sounds fantastic.
No, it’s not the quickest, no it’s not razor sharp on the brakes, but it looks brilliant & sounds it too. They have so much character. I now enjoy my ride & the scenery too.

K1600GT owner, former FLSTFI owner. When I sold my Harley I cried like my dog died. Your vid reminded me why. Really glad you enjoyed your time on the 883...cool as you like and really chilling, as long as there’s no traffic and it’s a decent day. My 50 mile commute was ok as long it was dry and longer rides were ok as long as planning was good . As a second bike, a Harley would be my first choice for the spare space in my garage...I’ve still got my cool motorclothes! I wish. Cheers, pal.

I nod and wave at everyone and it's mostly Harley and GS riders that don't nod back, which I find funny as I have a GS at the moment. Anyway, I'll keep nodding and waving because I just love being a biker. Great honest vid.

Looks like you enjoyed it buddy! I own two big boy Harley’s a road king for touring and a breakout for fun. I ride a about 12, 000 miles a year normally with at least one euro trip in there. I must admit I am a waver no matter what anybody is riding and I find it’s normally only Harley and retro triumph riders that reciprocate the gesture back.
I’ve rode other marques but never found one that makes me feel like a Harley does.
If your ever coming to north Devon your always welcome to take one of mine out over the moors for a blast.

I have tried on a fair few occasions to feel at home on a HD but it still is my least favourite motorcycle brand. Sorry Rich but for what I want out of riding the Harley has never given me any riding satisfaction but it portrays an image and serves an audience and biking is all about enjoying the ride. Great film again Rich. Thanks for sharing.

I had a 2014 Low Rider and a 2015 Road Glide. Sold them both and went back to Yamaha. (FJR and a Super Tenere) The Road Glide was the ultimate for long distance riding here in North America, comfort in spades. Extremely heavy at about 940 lb dry weight decked out with a tour pak etc. The only thing I miss is the feeling of belonging. When you ride a Harley and get welcomed to the family you really get a sense of belonging to something like you do not get with any other bike.

Used low mileage Harley's are pretty common here in the states. I think riders get caught up in the image game rather than just enjoying what you ride. No reason you can't have a liter bike in your garage, right next to a pushrod VTwin.

I agree, I have never considered myself a certain kind of biker, I'm a two wheel rider. I have seen at first hand the differences though. When we owned the Goldwing we were ignored by other bikers and when we were on the BMW K1600 GTLE, again, We were ignored by non BMW riders. Other bikers were unsure as to how to react when we waved from the Wing and the K. Silly really. I even waved at Vespers and Lambrettors. Loved this Rich.

Riding a Harley is a tricky thing, the noise is both a love and hate with me... However, there’s no way you can have stock pipes on a Harley, or your not in the club! There are times when on long trips on mine I wish it was quieter. But the times you first jump on, turn on and it roars into life and puts that smile on your face... well outweigh the occasional ‘embarrassment’s’ and nothing like riding in a group either 🙂
You should try a one of the bigger V twins if you get the chance, and the so called negatives people always mention vibration, basic controls, noise, clunk on the gearbox etc etc... are what I love about mine. I suppose like most riders, If I wanted a quiet no flys in your teeth experience, I’d be in my car 😁
P.s I always wave.. or nod...even to mopeds 👋... it’s those GS riders that don’t in my experience!

  • @sleepindragon179
    @sleepindragon179 Před 5 lety

I'm not a Harley or cruiser rider, but there's something appealing about them until you have to go around a bend then it strikes you that they're shit!!
I used to work with a couple though when I was on tankers. Hard to admit 😉, but when they wear black open face lid with black shades and face mask and black leathers with black bike there is a certain element of don't even look at me I'm sub zero cool.
Certainly too cool to nod at another biker. And cruiser riders who are members of one of the proper bike gangs forget it.

Hi Richy, I had an old bmw r1200gs sold it bought an hd roadking 1690cc had it for 4 weeks traded it for a new 1200gs,personally I think hd riders don’t wave is because they can’t take their hands off the bars due to the vibrations lol 😂

I've got what is probably the British equivalent, a Triumph America. Parallel twin cruiser. Same sort of capacity although a bigger fuel tank (210miles at least).

I never let anyone else ride my Indian but... 🤔 maybe.
Will you and the crew be at the MCN Festival this weekend Richy?
I'm glad you actually like the 883, that means we could make a cruiser rider out of you yet! 😉

Don't have one myself...not into the hype...but would love a few of the models...some are very nice...nice sounds...glad you had a good run...also my self-imposed prejudice against the little 883.... but your vid brings out the best...would be a good one in the stable...for runnin to eat breakfast...I know my buddy has a clean 03 heritage ultra classic, a stunning 16 streetglide....nice examples esp the way he details, leds, and air shocks on the glide....anyways...

I rode a harley fat boy 12 years ago, loaned by a local harley dealer for the afternoon. He said 'take it and enjoy it'. My conclusions were it was very loud (people looked visibly pissed off with the noise), very expensive for what you get, not very good at picking up speed, not very good at slowing down, footboards scraped when doing a roundabout and not very good at turning. Salesman said that it's a 'way of life' not about great riding characteristics. I got back on my vfr800 and was happy again. I don't get it and harley riders don't nod ( for the most part) like bmw GS riders. Fine for scratching the terminator 2 itch but apart from that it gave me a headache. It seems to look right on a harley you have to wear all the harley apparel which makes you look like you're trying to be the Space Cowboy from the Levi's advert. Harleys belong in America; Triumph all the way baby! Each to their own though. Having said all that, if I were to go the harley route this 883 is the way to go. It can be turned into every other kind of harley at a (more) reasonable price. The word for this bike is 'trying' to be cool, trying to be cool is different, it's as much about look at me everyone as it is riding the thing. And a bit like large American cars on British roads, they look like they're in the wrong place. Trying to be cool never was cool. Cool is subjective, often unintended, an opinion of someone else (but I get it can make a rider feel special which is very nice and what it's all about). Meow! Sorry to sound a bit negative just my very humble (and quite possibly wrong) opinion. (I think the Honda st1100 is cool so there you go). Ps I think what you mean is bikers or harley riders.
