A decent pot boiler of a gangster movie. Quite a few "movie stars to be" played supporting roles, like Brad Dilman and Jack Nicholson.
Jason Robards really chewed the scenery as an over the top Alphonse Capone.

The fight between Pete and his moll over the fur coat is about the best live action cartoon I've ever seen. This film is so full hair-brained enthusiasm. There was a period between Bonny and Clyde 1967 and Godfather 1972,
The surroundings and things like automobiles are so authentic for the period where this is action is portrayed!
If you’re from Chicago or the surrounding areas you know how accurate this movie is. Moran is every bit the intellect compared to his animated counterpart Capone. All the victims are given believable reasons as to how they got lined up. And the narrator is amazing because he’s always there, explaining each characters ultimate legacy.
It’s a shame this film is as underrated as it is. Definitely on the list of must watch films that take place in the Windy City.

Bruce Dern had such a small part in this film but he did it just great.
One of the best gangster movies made, my favourite. Though it is a true crime dramatization really. Great cast but the real stars are the props and sets and costumes. All period correct cause they were still in use at the time.

My uncle ran the projector for this movie at the Hollywood Bijou in downtown Oatmeal, Ohio. He thought Fred and Ethel were communists.
I really enjoy the performances of Jason Robards and George Segal. Two aces that seem like gangsters to me!

Great music. Especially the out-of-tune Charleston rag piano piece at the beginning. Definitely sets the tone.
That psychopathic stare that George Segal gives Nick Sorello while Hyer counts out the money is a real good touch. I've been on the receiving end of exactly that same stare while sueing someone in the courthouse. I won that suit but the guy didn't pay. About a year later his enemies shot him dead in his own house.
The individuals whom ever shot him it's called patients.
Paul Frees masterful voice as the narrator made the movie.
I guess I get to be the first to acknowledge legendary One Life to Live actor Clint Ritchie.

Hearing Paul Frees' no nonsense narration, you wouldn't know this is the same voice actor for Boris Badenov in the "Rocky and Bullwinkle" cartoons.

Paul Frees, narrator, was one of the two "man of a thousand voices" for cartoons, the other being Mel Blanc. He was Boris Badenov (Bad Enough?) of Rocky and Bullwinkle.

In the past, critics viewed Roger Corman's work as "camp" and as B movies. Today's generation largely views his work as genuine art. I always loved his movies back in the day and greatly appreciate that so many in the current generation views his works in the same way I always did.

Something I always wondered: Are the scenes in "The Blues Brothers" (set in Chicago) where everyone emerges from rubble and quietly brushes off the dust and debris an "homage" to the big restaurant hit scene in this film?

Pretty imaginative with the facts in this one right from the start. The massacre actually happened in a garage in an alley.

As a kid too young to drive my buds and i were on the Clark st bus to Cubs game. We jumped off at 2122 and knocked on front door.
No answer, ran into alley and pushed open the unlocked rear door. I stepped in and a grumpy old guy yelled what you want?
Can we see where the gangsters were shot. No he roared and slammed the door shut. But i stood inside for a few moments. “ wow” I remember thinking
Pretty sure this is HD wide-screen 1.85:1 and Blu-ray. Great film.

Mayor Daley ordered the garage torn down in '67. The site remains haunted to this day. Stand in front of 2122 N. Clark street and you'll experience a sensation in the upper chest.
As for the wall with bullet holes...It's located in the Las Vegas Mob Museum.
Been to the site twice 1992 and 95 walked around on the grass trying to take it in ,i had read that it was haunted but I never felt anything. But I’m a believer in that type of stuff .Apparently the building next door is said to have some weird goings on it makes you wonder for sure.

Roger Corman's first big budget movie! And a great one! But the studio execs didn't trust him, and they interfered constantly during the filming. So much so, in fact, that Corman never made another big budget film, preferring to go back to the freedom of low budget B movies.

Corman was hated he took major advantage of musicians who didn't realize they should have gotten residuals and would have made a lot of money but because Corman knew he was taking advantage he never put it in their contracts

A TIMELESS CLASSIIC. GREAT CAST OF AÇTORS
Cast is a who's who of well known character actors.
Robards is probably the only 'A' lister here the rest are essentially character actors who had been all over tv and movies.
My favorite actor, Paul Richards, is Charles frishetti in this movie.
I don't think anyone here is still living with the exception of Valerie Perrine and Bruce dern. Joe turkel died not long ago. And Segal died year before last.
David canary has died recently as well.

Next to the godfather this was perhaps one of the greatest gangster movies of all time along with once upon a Time in America and Scarface I love Jason robards portrayal of Al Capone and this is me and my wife's favorite all-time holla

Jason Robard's performance wasn't bad but he was much too old for this role, Capone was only 30 years old when this took place. Still the best thing Roger Corman ever did!

Most ppl who have seen this don't like Jason robards Capone, but I think its s great one. Its unlike any other, he puts in the effort. Even if it seems over the top at times.
I am one of the one them. Some serious overacting was directed in this film, including George Segal. But of course the film was an historical dramatic film.
I like Robard's' portrayal of Capone in this flick. This is a movie, not a dry old history book. It's SUPPOSED to be exciting and entertaining, not just dry facts. Robards hiding behind the bodyguard after the attack in the restaurant scene is almost comical. In other scenes he's a blazing psychotic, or a shrewd businessman. I say, "well done Mr. Robards". RIP.

Wasn't as simple as Capone vs. north side. There was Spike O'Donnell, Joe Saltis, the west side O'Donnell's. Allegiances swung back and forth. Saltis and Weiss were about to merge as a Polish force, Weiss was helping Saltis beat a murder charge when Weiss was killed. Saltis was a partner of Frank McErlane, but Frank was in prison and Saltis had no muscle against Spike O'Donnell on the South side. Many don't know how close Capone was with Weiss and O'Banion.

Amazingly the Saint Valentine's Day Massacre didn't change much except focus more Law Enforcement heat on the gangster. Capone went to prison in 1931 ending his six year reign. Moran did not disappear from Chicago due to the massacre. The North Side Gang under Moran did not receive it's death blow until the repeal of prohibition four years later and then it lost it's gambling interests in 1935 to the National Crime Syndicate and faded away, which also operated Murder Inc. into the late 1940's. Then the NCS sort of faded away as the Italian mafia took over much of organized crime. Moran apparently did not save any money and turned to a life of petty crime and spent most of it in prisons. He died in 1957 at 63.

Joe Aiello was murdered in 1930 by machine gunners in an apartment building in Chicago on orders from Joe Masseria. Capone was just his Capo for Chicago at the time of the massacre
One of my favorite movies of the genre; but Jason Robards’ turn of Capone was more a caricature of Edward G. Robinson as a gangster.

Who gives af if Robards is skinny he’s a f’n boss in this movie and plays the hell out of it. I was skeptical of the casting at first viewing too but realized back then you had to put a performance in a little amount of time they didn’t have the DeNiro luxury of having a whole year to prepare for a role. You had your best actor play the complex role simple as that
