    I know i shouldn't - but I've been handfeeding Safeway 5 seed bread to local deer for more than 10 years. Does bring their speckled fawns around to let them eat it. And they will actually come trotting across the yard to eat from my hand.
    I have a separate question.
    I have a family of deer that suddenly have patches of hair loss following a recent storm. Their weight and behavior has remained normal. Hooves do not show signs of EHD, nor are they acting like they have CWD. Is it possible they have a version of frostbite?

    Like a lot of folks who have good intentions, we didn't do our research (your channel for instance) and only now have been educated how a diet of just corn during harsh winter can do more harm than good. We're in NJ & usually don't have as harsh winters as we've experienced for at least since early January. Frigid temps, ice, snow, etc. We have a small 'herd' of deer (our top count was 12) who've managed to survive in the 2 acres of woods behind our house. Otherwise we're in a pretty urban area. We started throwing out about 3lbs of corn each day in specific areas at our woods' line. The deer, naturally, come every day. Now we're concerned we're created a harmful situation for them and want to know if we should cut back slowly on that daily routine. Less corn and not every day. I do see them still browse the woods. So I don't think they're totally dependent on the corn. But this morning I noticed some deer scat that instead of looking like the usual pellets, looked loose. Could've been from another animal, but I'm concerned now if it was deer scat that the corn may be the cause of digestive upset.
    Can you advise on our thoughts to cut back slowly and let them get back to their natural eating habits during the winter? I appreciate all your advice and would really appreciate your or anyone else's input on this. Thanks so much.

      I’m in Louisiana wondering the same. I went to Tractor supply and bought some premium deer feed-20% protein. I feel terrible that I might have harmed deer with corn

    I don't know about this...I would have liked to hear from a biologist on the subject instead of just a business selling products..This looks like the classic ,exaggerate an issue and then sell the solution...Deer have been eating corn in the winter in farm country for a 100 years. I'm calling bull on this one..Do a part two with experts.

    • @rhaezic
      @rhaezic Před 4 lety

      Xtek it’s actually pretty simple science, corn offers little to no nutritional value for deer. Even humans have trouble digesting it.

    • @bullyhilloutdoors6442
      @bullyhilloutdoors6442 Před 3 lety

      @@rhaezic humans digestion of corn is irrelevant to whether or not a deer can digest corn. You’re right corn does almost absolutely nothing for humans, but the best hunting and healthiest deer populations come from farm country so that’s a tough argument to make

      😂😂 do some research. Everything he said is 100% correct. Many “hunters” kill more deer by feeding than they do by “hunting”

      @@ScooterLee-ei1ep . 20 years of feeding corn all winter while keeping a healthy herd . the years we couldn't get back we had winter kill off. The others close to none.

      I think he's factually correct, but he's thinking in terms of an exclusive feed source rather than a supplemental feed source. If you just supplement their natural feed, they'll get all those other nutrients from their natural feed. If you dump a big pile of corn, they'll fill up on it exclusively rather than forage in the wild.

    If you feed a moderate quantity of corn through the fall and in to the winter the rumen microbes should adapt, right?

    I've seen some deer farmer's place a round bail of high protein alfalfa in there deer yards how beneficial would this be for a wild heard of deer?

    Can a person be responsible for hitting a deer if they feed them to leave the woods to cross a road to a surburn area

  • @mainenorthwoodshunter3265

    Great information. It is more like chess than checkers I guess. You need to know what one step will do five steps down the road to make sure you are doing the right thing and can afford to keep the feed train going. God Bless andGood Hunting! Maine North Woods Hunter

    Nothing was mentioned about not making a pike with the feed either, if a lot of deer eat off the same pile of food it can spread cwd, which is a disease thats destroying the deer population.
