Tonight they dig into Edmonton' 2-1 loss to the Panthers of Florida in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final with their 2 Good Things, 2 Bad Things, 2 Numbers and 1 Conundrum podcast

I dunno...just looking for solace somewhere and I suppose the fact that this window is open for at least another year or two is something to hang our hats on

Glad Janmark came into his own in Edmonton . Always loved him here in Vegas. He scored hatty in game 7 against Minnesota in 2021 for us and dude just clearly elevates in the playoffs

My little heart is broken it was broken in 2006 and it's broken again. In 1983 the Oilers got swept by the Islanders and came back the next year to win the cup the Panthers lost in the final last year but won the cup this year. Vegas made it to the finals in 2018 and lost then won the cup in 2023. 2015 Avalanche lost in finals and came back and won the cup in 2020. The point is alot of teams have made it to the finals and lost then came back very soon sometimes the net year and won the cup so fingers crossed this happens for the Oilers.
Difference is, Vegas, Tampa , both had there core signed long term at reasonable price.
Oilers are about to sign Drai and Bouch to a combined 22+m . Add on McDavid 12 =34m and for fun add in Nurse at 9m for another 6 years.
An aging Hyman and Nuge who are both early 30s. Yeah window is closing lmao

After seeing Edmonton crowds, the Florida crowd sounded quite subdued during ceremonies. You could hear the interviews on the ice for ___’s sake. If the Oilers had lost this on home ice, the crowd would still be maddeningly loud. Florida doesn’t know and love hockey like Edmonton does.
Of course not. It's so hot and humid there! The fans don't grow up there playing ice hockey. The fans are transplants from hockey cities NY/NJ CHICAGO. They move to Florida to retire.

You guys always bring the laughs and insight when the fans need it. I feel for McDavid and the whole team, but if they failed to bring their best at the pinch point, then the Panthers, who did bring their best, take the win. It’s okay.
I sure hope Draisaitl keeps his heart in this team. Next year they can build on all the success and hard lessons. They would be even more dangerous and consistent next year.

Florida won the cup for the first time in franchise history after loosing in the finals last year. Connor McDavid won the Conn Smythe as the MVP of the playoffs (he didn't come out for the trophy, he wanted the cup).
So I couldn't watch or listen to the game. I have treatments on Monday's that make that pretty much impossible. I tried catching what I could but just couldn't watch or listen to a lot.
The stats tell and interesting back and forth in some ways but the key stats for me are Giveaways, Takeaways, and Blocked Shots. Oilers had less giveaways (by 4) (good). They also had 5 less takeaways (not good) and 4 less blocks (13 for the Oilers, 17 for the Panthers, also not good). The Panthers out hit Edmonton 30 to 19 (so by 11). Edmonton was slightly better in the faceoff circle and took 1 extra penalty though both PK's were at 100% and no one scored on the PP. By all accounts this was a good and very close game that the Panthers just did a little more to win.
Mentioned it to a friend's son once but it's possible to do your best and do everything right yet still lose because others can be better. In this game Leon didn't even get a Shot on Goal and Connor had 2. The big 4 were offensively invisible. That is a good for the Panthers and a Bad for the Oilers.
I hope the Oilers get there, I hope they hoist the cup again (and I hope it's next year). Hope is understanding but a lot of things have to happen for there to be realistic hope. To all of those that have followed hockey and who's youtube sites I've ever posted on I want to thank-you for your support of hockey and, most of all, the Oilers.
To all the fans of every team it is possible your team will get there, you do have a chance and you can also feel the wildest of high's and the lowest of low's and everything in-between. Never give up. Never surrender to the apathy that can happen. Make sure your team knows that you support them.
I am so grateful to my community, my home city of Edmonton. The fans here are wonderful (and very very loud) in their support. I'm grateful to the Oilers fans across the planet, old and new. Those that may have just seen hockey for the first time or those that have been watching or playing for decades. Thank-you for allowing me to contribute in my way and for those that have supported my efforts. Take care all.
Bad start to a horror movie is a great line
Damn, I honestly thought the Oilers would do it but the Panthers said not in our house and they were the better team in this game. Thanks for all all your insights guys, enjoyed it!

Oilers let the pressure get to them imo. They played Antsy, bad hands. Couldn't make 3 pass's on the transition for long long stretches'. D men passing up 15 foot pass's to an open skating forward, just to lob it in the general direction of a forward who is covered by 2 opposition players. Played frenzied till the point of being gass'ed. "If the Oilers play smart and Hard they will win the Cup" I said. Well they played with a lot of effort, but not a lot of smarts imo. That soft 2nd goal..ouch! Maybe Oilers will just play the right way consistently now, instead of having to be on the brink of disaster to get their act together. Still, a very memorable season!
memorable season indeed but then again, the core always giveback to their habits, cutesy and cycle but don't create anything and hope for an outside shot, and the D as you've said. Terrible passing plays. coach hasn't played his 3rd line more IMO the more effective line than any player in the top 6.

They gave us hope. Came back from 0-3 deficit only to bring a lifeless effort when it mattered the most. 2 freebie goals against and that's all Florida needed.

If game 7 was played in Edmonton, Oilers wouldve won!.....why it's so important to win the Presidents Trophy. They must have a better start next season and keep it going. It was a great year! Feel sad for the players, and all the fans. Thank you OIL for the great playoff ride....until next year!

Well played season, oilers are so close. Just a few tweaks, I’m sure they learned from this what they need. Whoever the next GM is. It’ll be a challenge but they can do it. Thanks for the podcasts by the cult of hockey. Always nice to watch 👍🏻. Look forward to them after the draft and free agency season. Oilers will win next season the way Florida has and previous cup winners have. They are earning it. One thing to add, I believe refs missed a tripping call moments before the 2-1 goal. Had they called it, probably Florida doesn’t have that 2-1 goal. Broadcasters pointed out the missed trip. Idk who it was but I remember seeing an oiler falling down due to a Florida players stick. TBH I’m not sure there is much integrity with the NHL.
We are so lucky to be here on the 24th of June having just watched our team come close but overall have an amazing season, yes it hurts so much, but have faith next year they will be back, in full force, with so much hunger and all having the experience now to deal with ANYTHING any team can throw at them, no longer are they just all offense, be proud because you should be! Have a wonderful summer and see you all in the preseason! Next year is OUR YEAR!
As soon as the Panthers won I had to shut it off and catch the Cult in A.M. In hindsight I think I bolted from that game as soon as it was over not because we lost but because we didn't really show up. We allowed the Panthers to dictate the type of game it was going to be and we never challenged that. We also clearly had lady luck abandon us tonight or did McLeod knock her overboard! My good thing was Skinner, and I feel bad for him that the winner was a weird one. It's too bad, but for the second straight year I don't think the better team won...the better team just couldn't prevent self inflicted loses. But despite that it was another amazing run. Thank you Oilers, Oiler fans, and all those who cover them including the Cult.

Draisaitl too. Nuge was an oxygen thief out there. They showed up scared and played timid. Damn them for that!
No shame Oilers, the Panthers played a solid game. But…I thought Oilers should have shot more from the points. They looked a little too calm and perfectionist at times as time wound down, starting with Ekholm’s pass straight to a Panther in the Florida slot, to Bouch chilling behind his net with less than 30 seconds left. I would have liked to see some more desperation in those final minutes. What I think the Oil needs is a more systematic way to get good chances on net. They gotta be more gritty, not just pretty.
Everyone loves the pretty offence, like perfect sharp angle Drai shots, Nuge’s wristers under the blocker, or 97’s threading through defenders, but they need more gritty offence, like a young Perry, a Kenny Linseman, a Rick Tocchet, or a McLeod taking Hyman lessons to heart, and the net. I’d like more of what Jon Goyens on Daily Faceoff described about the Rangers O, consisting of layers of players rotating netfront to tip the puck.
Holland did a great job. The team improved every year under him. Thanks to Knoblauch his final grade is higher than a 'B'. GoooOooiillerrrrrzzz!
This loss ultra-sucks, but we had an awesome year. I believe this is different than 2006, in that we have much better chance to be back, soon, and multiple times.
Gentlemen ... I am currently traveling and have been in Japan since mid May. It has not been possible for me to watch the games so I have been left with the highlight packages. But I have watched each and every one of your reviews of the games. I can't thank you (and your colleagues) enough for your thoughtful, funny, and honest appraisal of each game.

I now live in Thailand and now working in Brazil. (Am from Edmonton) I stream all the games and actually use a VPN set to Japan to accomplish this. Great season but we really missed Kane in this series, I think if he was healthy he would of been a difference maker. the boys played hard for sure and had a great season!
Failures are stepping stones to eventual success if one knows how to use and manage them. They did get progressively closer. A key question now is time.

Kulak was #3 best D in this playoff, unfortunately made a bad read in G7. Still had half a game to get 1 goal.
Gotta give Florida credit they played great. And outside of Ekholm Janmark and Henrique the Panthers just wanted it more than the Oilers. After this, I don't think the young guys will ever want to feel this again if they get back to the cup.
Not wanting to lose again, on home ice, and be remembered for the biggest collapse in sports history, trumps wanting to come back and win your first trip to the cup.
I'm not too disappointed, they gave us a heck of a ride and you could tell in the 1st 10 minutes of the game the desperation in Panthers not to lose was higher than the oilers desire to win. Except Janmark Ekholm and Henrique you could see they were desperate not to feel the disappointment of losing the stanley cup again.
Now all the young guys know that feeling too and will want it more, not just the desire to win, but the desperation not to feel this again.
Great job you guys have done all season. I wish the players and coachs would listen to your advice it could help the team.😢
Thanks oilers. This team showed so much heart. And I for one was entertained for 107 games & a rollercoaster season. We came up a goal short but we true fans were there to the bitter end as opposed to 30 other teams fans & some of our own who continue to bitch & moan about the oilers. Sorry you were not there to see the hay days. It’s made you bitter! And finally thanks to COH! Always love the pod! Hope never dies!

The Coach and Players all openly supported Mumford in the Media as a pushback against online pressure ,its clear that Mumford has produced a negative or regressive impact in the Oilers Locker Room with his spin doctor routine. Jeff Jackson brought a Poison Pill into the Oilers Room and it destroyed them from the inside out ,turned them into monotone Drones. I blame Mumford.Paul Maurice was aware of Mumfords impacts and used it as a weapon to prepare for Game 7 .
Anyone notice how they stopped making the simple passes up to the forwards and just chipped it out everytime onto Floridas sticks. It was driving me crazy

Yeah, someone said he turned into Makar these playoffs, yeah right, he's really not all that good at defense but can get the offense going only playing with McD and Drai, the Oilers will probably overpay him. He isn't worth 10 million bucks just like Nurse isn't worth 9 million bucks. Bouchard is better than Nurse but it just goes to show they overpaid Nurse and I hope they don't overpay Bouch.

Janmark.
I agree the big guns were overused and gassed in the 3rd. all season they rolled the lines and were patient when tied or behind. nothing left for the last 90 sec!
I think the Yips beat the oilers as much as the panthers did
Bottom line is, I have been saying the Oilers needed to come out flying like they had them previous three games in order to win and establish dominance early. They did not do that, they looked timid. They were behind it all night from the first five minutes on, they did have somewhat of a pushback in the second and third. But too late. They did not deserve to win it. I didn’t play with Temp from the beginning? On Skinner and defensive play on. They did not deserve to win.

I think the Panthers benefitted of having played the final series in this crucial game 7. They were confident. Similarly, if the Oilers would reach to the finals next year, I think they would take the cup. The team was spectacular after the coach change. Even Skinner was great, but I wonder, if he is great enough. Your analysis has been such a treat to listen. Thank you.
Mistake by the coach, henrique line should have play more , Nuge should have never start the game on first line
Good point Dave about not using the hot Janitor-Rico-Brown line more, also to keep the big guns fresher. Did Ceci live up to his Mr. Game 7 label?

Unfortunately they look like game 2 oil I’m a little disappointed with tonight but overall hell of a season good work oilers. Hopefully this is a learning lesson for next few years, I’m sad too Bruce I feel ya/ 😢bad memories of 06 yikes.
The Oilers focussed on Bobrovsky's glove side the whole first period, like they did in the first 2 or 3 games. Not sure why they did that. They lost the series because they lost the first game.

Wide open on the 1st goal
The Oilers were outhustled in this game and didn't want it as much. What actually happened to McDavid's vaunted offensive abilities the last two games? This game is actually why McDavid's name is not in the conversation when talking about the best player all-time. Points are one thing, leadership is another. And McDavid is not there yet. I don't blame McDavid for the loss of this game or the series because one man is not the team. But what I saw in the series was the unlikely way that the Oilers' third line was the most consistent and probably the best line for the team in the final series. Something about the way the third line gelled, especially in the final series, says the rookie coach made one big rookie mistake in the final game by not playing the series' best line enough in the last game.
Only Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux have had more points in a playoff season. McDavid had this season’s Selke trophy winner Barkov and the rest of his line dedicated to shutting him down. All the opposing top goal scorers were shut down by Barkov’s line in their previous series. Florida had the lowest goals against and the third lowest shots against during the regular season. They are a defensive power house.
@@twiki9995 Good points, but if you think Gretzky didn't have exactly the same treatment, you'd be wrong. I watched Gretzky from his WHA days and he had it every bit as tough as McDavid does. Gretzky was a different player than McDavid in many ways but he was a better leader, at least to what McDavid has shown to this point in his career. And the one key point virtually everyone misses in all this greatest of all time and leadership talk, where is Mark Messier in this conversation? Messier led the Gretzkyless Oilers to a fifth Stanley Cup that Gretzky never did get. That Oilers team was no one trick pony and I personally feel that Mark Messier was the best hockey player of all-time, regardless of Lemieux's scoring accomplishment and leadership, Gretzky's records, Jagr's points, Ovechkin's goal scoring feats, and even Gordie Howe's all round abilities and toughness. Messier made a promise to New York Rangers' fans when he joined that team for the 1993-94 season. Presumptuous in the extreme but Messier delivered. No one else in NHL history has done that the way Messier did. Of course he didn't do that alone; including Mess, seven players of that Rangers 94 Stanley Cup championship team were ex-Edmonton Oilers, almost a third of the team. But Messier was the captain and absolutely undisputed leader of the team. Messier is still very high up on the all-time scoring leaders list, is probably physically stronger and tougher than anyone else on the list, maybe a draw with Jagr, but is undisputably the greatest leader on the list. Even Wayne Gretzky, who wore the C in some of the Oilers' greatest years, will admit that Messier was the team leader in the dressing room, and that's where leadership comes from. McDavid still has many years ahead of him, hopefully, and he still has plenty of opportunity for winning the championship and improving and honing his leadership skills. But he has not arrived there yet. McDavid is already one of the greatest players of all-time on a pure skill level but he just has not got there yet based on his not leading his team to sip champagne from the Cup. There have been dozens of extremely gifted offensive play makers and goal scorers who've never had their names on the Stanley Cup. Mostly, their names aren't easily remembered or commonly well-known. McDavid is not one of these but until his name is on the Stanley Cup, as I believe it will be one day, we may just want to pump the brakes a bit on putting his name on hockey's equivalent to Mt. Rushmore.

Oilers were the victim of an insanely long season and an insanely long playoff season. I know it’s all about money. But game 7 of the Finals in late June? I know, I know, it’s all about money. But to play the Finals in Florida in late July? It’s closer to a game show-SURVIVAL IN THE EVERGLADES!
Another game where they fail to show up on time and followed up with some awful play. Panthers were constantly in front of Skinner, and often all alone, yet so many Oilers shots had no one around. Not sure why Leon even played. Bad puck luck didn't help.
Agreed, If Leon is hurt that bad why even Put that the Mcdrai , Hyman line only to be caved in our zone, plus the breakouts on our blue line isn't that clean that only went back to the Panthers.
Leon was ok. He was up against a defensive monster in Forsling who shut him down Lidström style...

@@Aaron-kq7rd Im talking about the game last night. Leon is a favorite player of mine, but he got absolutely nowhere. Forsling handled him over and over in the Panthers zone. Not by being more physical, but by being smart, somewhat Lidström esque

Wasn't Skinner...it was a total lackluster performance on the Oilers in general. Very flat...no fire, no extra stride or undying effort to get to the puck. If players are hurt they should NOT be playing!!! I don't care who they are, that's just plain stupid.
The other thing is how can the whole team deflate at the same time? I don't get it... it wasn't just Skinner letting in weak goals...he actually kept them to 2 points...which is very reasonable ... it was lack of offense. The Oilers played all out hockey for 3 games and in the SCF of Finals they barely skate to the puck...literally backing up as a play develops and they just escort them into the front of the net. It almost seems rigged. If I didn't know any better that would be a fair conclusion. The Oilers do have the laying an egg syndrome from time to time...just I thought they had more will and presence of mind than that. Very disappointed. There's got to be a morning after. It was a great run, exceeded expectations. No matter how hard I wanted to believe they could do it, I couldn't find it for this game. Unfortunately with Ryan Mcleod he doesn't lay a hit and when you can't score and barley defend you have to contribute with hitting, he won't learn from this cause he is a perimeter player was and always will be and should be moved on from IMO
Agreed. He's good on the PK but there are a lot of bottom 6 guys that can PK for cheaper and produce just as much.

What’s going to happen with this team , not talking about Drai staying or leaving, I’m talking about Pickard, Ceci, Broberg, Stretcher, Henrique, brown, Perry, McLeod, Ryan, Janmark, are gone and if they could bye bye Kane & Nurse, that’s 12 players changes on a 20 man roster, I don’t see them back again, you can’t just fill your roster in the waiver wire, Detroit won cups because of 3rd & 4th line’s consistently

A stretch pass 4 feet off the ice that lands right by Janmark for a break away is an amazing pass. Saucer passes in the air like this are much more difficult to intercept.

unfortunately the bad goal that has plagued Skinner for a couple of years was in evidence last night. Yes , he's played well the last few weeks...made some great saves... but his propensity to allow a really soft goal cost the Oilers. It's game seven , tied 1 - 1. You can't allow that goal by Reinhart. That stop MUST be made. Under the glove on short side..not screened. Not deflected. It's irrefutable , you must save that at NHL level. Not saying Oil would have won , but that was tough. Ultimately in most important game of his career Skinner was the second best goalie. This tendency to allow bad goals on occasion is why many have lingering doubts about Skinner...myself included.
A fair point. However the team did not do much to take over the game early or claw back later either. Seemed like they lost some nerve and showed us that default team that frustrates the hell out of fans year after year in the McDavid era.
I actually didn't enjoy 2023-24 as much as the preceding four seasons. This past season was weird. They sucked hard at the start of the year, and then McDavid was never himself as he couldn't shoot or handle the puck well (he was much better in 2022-23). Campbell's fail (again) was depressing. Draisaitl was fine but not as good as usual. Kane sort of aged out. Nuge went back to being a nothing-burger at even strength. Only Hyman and Bouchard far exceeded expectations. I hope next year is steadier.

Slow down they were both injured they tried. Before you say many player play through injuries yea but it ain’t always easy is it. Easy to sit here and type this crap when you don’t even play in the NHL at that caliber.
