I grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana listening to this woman on the radio. As they played great song after great song by her, I thought she was a superstar. It was only many years later that I discovered that very few even knew who she was. One of the highlights of my life was hearing her give a concert in a small club. She sang all the songs that I knew as her "hits" and some I had never heard before. They were all diamonds floating in the velvet black night.
I grew up listening to Irma. Queen of Soul of New Orleans. i went to A small nightclub in Metateri to turn My Husband on to her. Did we have a ball. Waving Handkerchiefs r Napins in da AIr. Doin da Second Line
439tab I lived in New Orleans for a couple years and she was one of my favorite discoveries along with Alan Toussaint. I looooooooooove Irma Thomas's sweet voice and she is just awesome
I worked at the 1984 Worlds Fair in New Orleans. Being a Ky. girl, I had never heard of Irma Thomas. I had the pleasure of hearing her many times along with the Neville Brothers. When I first moved to N.O, I felt like I had moved to another country! ha
I got to dance with her when I was about 17 and in high school, sorta/mostly drunk at a Loyola University fraternity party at a downtown hotel. She was prob in her early 20s. I pulled a chair up to the stage, stood on it and danced my ass off; and she just smiled and sang on. Then I asked her to sing her Coca Cola commercial which was making the rounds at the time, and she laughed and laughed, Zing Zing Zing Coca Cola, Refreshes Best. Growing up in NOLA in the 60s it was usual to have this caliber of talent as the band for the night. Wonderful.
Irma Thomas, one of the sweetest songbirds I've ever heard...So sweet, so emotional in her vocal, gorgeous tremolo...and exquisite timing....Oh and a very nice band to back her up.
Irma Thomas is one of my all time favorites, her voice is like no other! I grew up listening to her and play It's Raining from my I-Pod every day during my walk at least 5 times, just can't get enough of her music ! In my opinion she should have been up there with Aretha and Gladys Knight ! When you are raising children but love to sing sometimes we have to make choices ! God Bless her !
I'm from New Orleans. Have always loved Irma. Sometimes I'm just cravin' to hear one of her songs, especially "lt's Raining" or "Ruler of My Heart" 💗 you so much Irma! Thank you and God bless you sweet woman🙏🤗xoxo😌
Wow...Sitting in Andalucia, South of Spain and not a drop in weeks. Looks like Arizona outside the window and this song just makes me smile and enjoy life all the better. Not many singers had so much love and fun pouring out like rain over the audience. Irma, you were the best!
I had a great experience with her band in 1993 after sitting on a balcony just off Boubon and smoking shit the cops would not have been going for. Two balconies away sat her entire band at the time and they loved the way the air smelled and asked if we would like to come down for a visit. Not knowing who these guy's were my buddy and I said sure so we walked on down the hall and met some really great guy's. Watched the Quarter street scene, smoked some more shit the cops would not have been going for, and had a blast with these guy's This was one of the nights of Jazz Festival and they said to us that we were going to be special guests that night out to the Lion"s Den if we would come out there. We took a taxi out there and it was in a scary-ass neighborhood. An armed guard escorted us into the club and they had chairs onstage for myself,my friend Steve, his sister and her friend. They treated us like royalty, fed us and bought us drinks. I will never forget that night as long as I live and the next year I called Wilbur Widow and told him I was coming back down. He told me to come on over and they did the same thing for us and to top it off I got to sit down with Irma and her husband and have a drink before the show. Had some great times chasing music over the years but that one was really memorable. A great bunch of people!!!
Thanks to Black Mirror that sent me to Anyone Knows What Love Is, and to the fabulous voice of Irma Thomas. It's crazy how music can be out there that in all my 55 years on this earth I haven't heard, should have heard, because she is fantastic!!
My Granny Kitty Kat’s Best & numero UNO friend & my Mother’s God Mother. Hearing this makes me smile but also cry. Brings back so many memories of my Granny! Sing Irma! Sing. Luv u lots!
It’s raining so hard Looks like it’s going To rain all night And this is the time I’d love to be Holding you tight I guess I’ll have To accept the fact That you are not here I wish tonight Would hurry up and end My dear It’s raining so hard It’s really coming down Sittin’ by my window Watchin’ the rain Fall to the ground This is the time I’d love to be Holding you tight I guess I’ll just go Crazy tonight It’s raining so hard Brings back memories Of the times When you were Here with me Counting every drop About to blow my top I wish this rain Would hurry up And stop I’ve got the blues So bad I could hardly Catch my breath The harder it rains The worst it get This is the time I’d love to be Holding you tight I guess I’ll just go Crazy tonight It’s raining so hard Brings back memories Of the times When you were Here with me This is the time I’d love to be Holding you tight I guess I’ll just go Crazy tonight
Irma Thomas: 2/18/1941 - Since kicking off her career in 1960 with the popular single “(You Can Have My Husband but) Don’t Mess with My Man,” this Award-winning singer and songwriter has become a beloved figure in her home state of Louisiana. Her decades of work in the genres of soul, gospel, and the blues, in addition to her devotion to the music of that area, lead to the locals bestowing her with the crown of the “Soul Queen of New Orleans”.
The show Treme (on DVD) brought me here. This song is beautiful but look for Ruler of My Heart. That's a true masterpiece, written by Irma Thomas herself. I heard music by Irma Thomas here in sunny California in the '60s, but most of her stuff is not currently played on local stations these days.
Nice song. This might sound funny, but the movie "Down by law" brought me to this song... obviously it's an older record and Tom Waits was not only watching the dance but also knew some lines and was singing it loudless...
No one will ever be able to bring what Ms Irma Thomas brings. She is pure New Orleans thru & thru !!
Ms. Thomas is our brightest star in my hometown. What a voice! I love to hear her sing. She's done more for our city than anyone. Irma is our Queen!

HAPPY 77TH BIRTHDAY IRMA THOMAS (FEBRUARY 18, 2018)
Beautiful
It’s raining so hard
Looks like it’s going
To rain all night
And this is the time
I’d love to be
Holding you tight
I guess I’ll have
To accept the fact
That you are not here
I wish tonight
Would hurry up and end
My dear
It’s raining so hard
It’s really coming down
Sittin’ by my window
Watchin’ the rain
Fall to the ground
This is the time
I’d love to be
Holding you tight
I guess I’ll just go
Crazy tonight
It’s raining so hard
Brings back memories
Of the times
When you were
Here with me
Counting every drop
About to blow my top
I wish this rain
Would hurry up
And stop I’ve got the blues
So bad
I could hardly
Catch my breath
The harder it rains
The worst it get
This is the time
I’d love to be
Holding you tight
I guess
I’ll just go
Crazy tonight
It’s raining so hard
Brings back memories
Of the times
When you were
Here with me
This is the time
I’d love to be
Holding you tight
I guess
I’ll just go
Crazy tonight
