Gravitas: How did Japan find 7200 new islands?

- In a new survey, Japan discovered it has 7200 more islands than it previously thought. Digital mapping by the geospatial information authority of Japan recently found there to be 14,125 islands in Japanese territory, more than double the figure of 6,852 that has been in official use. Molly Gambhir reports.

This reminded me of a childhood incident. We went to a restaurant and among other things ordered a chicken dish. I was adamant that I needed 5 chicken pieces whereas the dish came with 3. To pacify me, the chef came with a knife and asked how many pieces I want. I said 5 and he turned around and made 3 pieces to 5. I did not understand until I grew older. I was happy😂I hope this counting does not end up like that.

If ocean level goes up by another feet, they will count another 10000 islands additional because water divided some of the main lands into islands

I bet all those "new" islands are the ruins of ancient buildings that were flooded or melted by a cataclysm so that we can now only see the tops of them.. and they waited until trees and plant life covered them significantly before making them public knowledge

With 412 being inhabited by humans
If they actually discover 7,000 more islands
That's over 13,000 to 16,000 islands they have now !

no, it's Japan that is contesting them with Russia. They never agreed a settlement after WW2. Japan just couldn't do anything about it militarily.

Did they just re count the current inventory to be precise as small island will depends on sea or water level during high or low tide and also some island can be made during volcanic and earthquake I guess only island nation do can really understand as they live with it

Well China made an island and a base out of reefs. As the world evolves, what previously insignificant islands became significant especially in war games.
True and they put a military base on it. But it is only partly build on a reef the rest is sand.
