  • This is a quick comparison of the Nikon 20mm f1.8G and the Sigma 20mm ART lens for Astrophotography.
    I've been using the Sigma for over a year and have produced most of my Astro images with this lens. However, I've recently decided to try out a different lens to see if lenses truly make a difference when it comes to astrophotgraphy.
    Here are my findings and thoughts/opinions.

    I enjoyed the video and appreciated your effort in making it. It remains hard to decide which one to get! Cheers!

    Thanks for this video, i’ve decided to go with the Nikon 20mm f/1.8, can’t wait for it to arrive and take it out shooting. Cheers!

    Getting the Nikkor since it has filter thread and it would be nice to put a nd filter in front of it when shooting video wide aperture

    Thanks! I'm trying to decide between these two - and possible a Rokinon/Samyang, and this was super useful. BTW - on small constructive comment... when you do the side by side comparison between the lenses, it might be good to lock the images in LR, so you can see the same portion of the frame right away. Keep up the good work.

    Hello, Are you planning to do a followup to this video? it will be nice to have some compare with a darker sky

    personally, I think you should hang one of those Air Force chart and tell us the resolving power center, edge - which is more precise than shooting some dark sky ...

    Nice video, seems like both lenses could have their use. If you HAD to pick between a lens, which would you go with and why?

      @AstrordinaryImaging  Před 6 lety +3

      Thanks Krayden. I've been using the Sigma for over a year now and it's served me well. But at this stage, I'll be using the Nikon more mainly due to it's size and weight. Downsizing my gear is appealing to me as it means less weight to carry into the field. And besides, they both pretty much do the same job.

      Does the Nikon have weather sealing? I think the Sigma Art Lenses don't have that. That alone will probably be a deal breaker to me .

    • @AstrordinaryImaging
      @AstrordinaryImaging  Před 6 lety +3

      The Nikon has a rear gasket and is claimed to have some level of weather sealing. The Sigma has none. But I wouldn't use either of them in the rain.
      I have used the Sigma in very sandy and windy conditions before and its been fine.

    Hi man, greetings from Argentina. Thank you for share your wisdom. I think this is the only video on CZcams that makes the comparison between this two great lenses. I want to get one of them, but I can't decide wich one. First of all I must say that I don't do astrophotography.
    For the Nikon side, I love the minium focus distance that allows interesting close up images, macro, and creative compositions. I really love the wide angle visual feeling for social photography. I like the fact I can put a filter on that lens too. And his weight it's good for stick in to the camera as "everyday" lens.
    I want to ask you at this point: is the image quality better on the Sigma? I watch the images in the video, and the colour and contrast on the Sigma side seems to beat the Nikon side. Am I right? The image quality and that 1.4 makes the decision hard.
    Now that you use de Nikon, do you miss any characteristic of the Sigma?
    In my country they both cost the same (1000 usd), so the money isn't an issue in this case. I wait for your answer and thank you for your time :D

      I sold the Sigma a while ago and am still using the Nikon today.
      The quality of the Sigma is really nice and I do miss using it. But overall, the Nikon works better for me because it's a better compromise of size, weight, filter thread and image quality.

    hows the autofocus speed/accuracy? Wedding/Concert photographer here.

    • @AstrordinaryImaging
      @AstrordinaryImaging  Před 6 lety +2

      I did not time the autofocus, but it feels like the Sigma is faster but required some AF fine tuning before it was totally accurate. The Nikon is a little more sluggish but very accurate straight out of the box.

    Exposure 1: 4sec, 800 ISO, f/1.8. Exposure 2: 4sec, 800 ISO, f/1.4. Hmmmm, why is exposure 1 2/3 of a stop darker? Such a mystery.

    Today I picked up a minty Nikkor 20/1.8G based upon Ken Wheeler's rave reviews (czcams.com/video/OqashwR7WR0/video.html). I intend to do some ND'd landscape shots soon. Excellent review BTW.

    Awful comparison! Would have given it two dislikes if I could. 9 minutes of video only on one set of (aimless) pictures taken in a specific condition, for two great lenses.

      @@BlackPilledWhite You know he was kinda a dick, but truth is some people just should not be doing CZcams videos or reviews. Obviously people who are shy and soft spoken or even boring should not be doing youtube and I think this guy qualifies. However I don't have to watch this guy and will not in the future, but if others like this guy and learn from him than thats great.
