    I just processed a coyote pelt for the first time myself. Based on your video instruction I was able to do a half decent job. Outside of some beginner mistakes that I made, leaving it to dry too long before flipping and left a little more grizzle around the head then I should have. your video was excellent and very helpful. Thank you for your teachings! 🍻🇨🇦

    Another great video Ed. A very good trapper taught me to borax the entire hide prestretching which eliminates the need to turn the fur - dry it fur side out. Works great! 👍

    nice job on the coyote , i was told to do the ears on the k9's split and cartilage removed ,if they don't doc you for it ,i'll do my ears like you do . they make a great presentation with natural ears.

      I understand that there are those who believe in removing ear cartilage. I did it one year and my average stayed the same from the previous year so what did I gain? Lol. I

    Once your fur comes out of the tumbler and is finished what’s the best way to store it if the fur truck won’t be around for a month or two? Great video.

    Very informative Ed and contained some good tips. I've always used solid coyote stretchers. I like your adjustable/ expandable stretchers better. I think they would allow better or quicker drying. May I ask where you find those?

    Should also hold the knife flat when pushing as well.
    Whoever said the curve of the knife should fit your beam was blowing hit air.
    You should only push about 2" of flesh at a time,if the knife fits the beam you are pushing 7 plus inches of flesh and that gets you in trouble

      Borax and salt do help preserve the hide but actually tanning the fur makes it pliable and longer lasting.

      Borax and salting is to dry/sterilize a little. Tanning is what turns it from rawhide into hide

    Can you start the tanning process right after you flesh them? Basically is the drying process necessary or is that just for selling hides? Im not selling my hides im keeping them.

    Ears are to easy not to take out the cartlege. About a minute per ear and they look way better and dont have to worry about rot.

      I skin my catch at dark same day usually with no problem. Hotter days you should skin much faster or more often. Thank you for the comment

    I bought a coyote pelt that says "no stretched & air dried" i only bought it to extend the arms that of a coyote coat that i bought, and repaired , so. i need to know how soften the stiff leather, i am very new to this, do you have any suggestions for me? thanks

      I wish I could. I haven't tanned myself. However I suggest you call Sleepy Creek Tannery in Iowa and ask what can be done. They may be able to help

    Might be a dumb question but I am just starting out and have heard of fur falling out? Is this due to improper tanning? Or is a tanning solution needed?

      Fur Falls out due to a variety of issues. One is to not getting the fur skinned quickly and either frozen or getting it fleshed and dried out in a timely manner.
      Try to consider your pelts as a ticking time bomb

      It can but the pelt will need tanned. Drying the hide is just a step in the process

      The next process would be either tan it yourself or ship to a tannery by mail. They can garmet tan it for you. Personally, I like Sleepy Creek Tannery in Iowa. They are online.

      Its Mane and tail shampoo. Gronwald fur says they throw the head away so I do not finish the ears. And the bottom lip is thrown away

      Same here, but I own 0 pelts. I'm from indiana, and want to learn trapping and hunting, sadly only a very distant uncle hunts and he only does it rarely. Been teaching myself because he said if I can hone my skills with a compound enough, he will take me deer hunting :/

      They are generally good through March. If you can't get them sold just bundle and freeze them.

    Amazing video! Great way of doing it. But just a small thing, to keep your fur a little cleaner while fleshing, try not to put it back onto the board where the meat and fat gets on your fur. Just something I recommend :)

    Great video, thanks! It seemed like after you washed them, you hung them to try fur side out, but then in the next scene, you showed us how to turn the furs from inside-out to right-side out. Do you hang them to dry fur-side in, or were those steps switched or something?

      Thaw and wash fur then hang fur side out day 1
      Day 2 flesh and hang fur side in
      Day 3 turn hide and brush fur out.
      Around day 5-6 take fur off and store

      I have composted them with great success and makes a great soil improvement.
      Several furbearers are edible such as bobcat, beaver, raccoons and opossum.

    I'm a decent fur handler but when I goof its always on the tits of a gip yote whats a good way to avoid this. I've been using a skinning knife around them with a bit better success but its slow going whats a good way to use my fleshing knife without popping them.

      That is a harder area to do. I knick a few of them each year. I use a pretty light fleshing knife over that area and when I feel it I just flesh around it.
