I think it was a reference to the Assyrian King Ashurbanipal, before the internal strife and collapse of the empire. He knew how to read and his own inscriptions.

I love how this channel almost always celebrates humanity and the accomplishments we've made! I know many scientists just focus on the bad aspects of humanity and end up pessimistic. I love your work so much!
i mean, aren't scientists supposed to answer questions, what ever branch it is. i think the reason why they focus on the wrongdoings is because they want to lessen the chance of giving the wrong answer
Not to toot my own horn, but our future did look a bit grim, given the recent events that have happened. But perhaps there is hope, and maybe it's not too late to change our world.
I like that Kurzgesagt tries to put a positive spin on their videos. Pessimism becomes a self fulfilling prophecy. Positivity can go as far and as high as it can.
Being a human biologist, I think its crazy how the emergence of human civilizations shaped our DNA as well. To give an example, humans (like many other mammals) used to be lactose intolerant upon adulthood. However, the domestication of animals led to the regular consumption of milk roughly 20000 ago. At that time, a mutation occurred which made people lactose tolerant and this mutation was so beneficial during periods of starvation that it soon spread across populations making the majority of people with European descent lactose tolerant today (I made a video about this). Human evolution is so fascinating!
Still tho why are we so arrogant and irrational to our problems and morals ,is it really based in our DNA, or is it something to do with our consciousness or we might can change it for good
Thank you, humans from the past and the future. You made me walk again when I destroyed my knee. Cured me with the medicines you developed a long time ago every time I got sick. Made technology that allowed me to meet amazing people from the other side of the globe. Made outstanding videos like this for other humans to enjoy. I try to contribute as much as possible to our technological world, doing my best at work, and helping other humans when possible, although its so small compared to everything else you did for me. I will be gone in a few decades, but you will keep going, you will end suffering one day, expand your realm to other worlds, even reach the stars of the sky.
This video really made me take pride in being a human. Sure we are full of imperfections. Sure a lot of us are cruel. Sure we had wars and fought each other. But the fact that this species, which is not the strongest, or the largest, or the fastest, managed to accomplish such outstanding feats in just 12,000 years is truly astonishing. We might even be able to change our fate which the dinosaurs couldn't. In the past 4 billion years, life has done stunning feats. But if I were to say which of them stands out the most, it would be the evolution of humans. Let's cherish our 12,000 years of achievement and hope that we keep doing amazing feats in the future.
Now that I think about the scale of time, and see that number 12,000 years before me, I feel like that's really not much time. We were pretty fast in becoming what we are! Compared to the rest of evolution, it's pretty much: Brain developed, some kind of sparkle made it meet a critical intelligence level, and boom! Technology and rockets. That makes the Fermi paradox even more curious. It seems that, whenever an intelligent being is developed, it takes about no time to become a space-faring civilization. Just think about it. The Roman empire is about 2,000 years ago. That feels like nothing for some reason. I mean, it's also just about 25 generations, just think about it: Your life is 1 generation! And then it's only 10,000 more years, since we became what we are and had the tools to be what we are. That's about 125 generations only, in terms of the livespan of today! (Yes, they lived way shorter, but I want to compare it to a timespan we can relate to). Even if we half the livespan, it's still only 250 generations. From the beginning of humanity to now. I'd say we are speedy fast! I didn't think that. If I had a guess how long my family tree goes backwards until the first human, I would have guessed something like: 1000? Not intellectually, because I've simply never thought about it consciously, and then of course it can't be. But by feeling alone, it "felt" like 1,000 generations at least, only now that my logics apparatus is analyzing it, I realize how SHORT that timespan really is! The world is a lot younger than I thought!
And we really live in the beginning of humanity, if we don't screw it up. In terms of a human livetime, I'd say that we as a species are just babies that learned to barely walk and talk. If we don't screw it up, there's so much potential! Let's think what we could actually do in 1000 generations! In the future. Now I understand, why most humans are not able to recognize the greater value of our life, and wars, greed and isolationism is so far-spread. Maybe we can even mentally adapt that far in the future. Step by step, like here. It just has to become a critical percentage of humans that adapt that thinking, and we will drastically do things differently. From there on, I am convinced, our development will really grow exponentially in any way, if we overcome that.
"Hey, come take a look at this." "What is it?" "You know those tiny hard things that grow on plants?" "Yeah." "Well last year, I stuck a couple in the ground, and now when I come back to check on them, there are plants there! The same plants that grow the same tiny hard things!" "Huh, that's interesting." "Do you know what this means?" "No." "Even MORE tiny hard things!"
From humble beginnings we have come far. That's why every person must strive to create a better tomorrow. Our individual stories are one of many, but the collective story of humanity is glorious, and we are all part of it
7:08 It's possible that the ancient people wanted more certainty for their kids so that they would always have a constant supply of food even if it wasn't as diverse, because from time to time nature could yield less food or things could happen, so it's always safer for an ancient parent to know that they have farmed food to fall back on for their kids. (This is a concept from Sapiens by the way, not my idea)
Gosh, those animations really bring a tear to my eye. Those weren't caveman, nor primitive humans. Those were people, people like you and me. People who had their own feelings, their own thoughts and their own unique journey throughout life. It's strange how we often forget this kind of things, even when it's about other folks in the present day.
Very true. Even a mere few centuries of distance, and we regard a number of our ancestors savages, even when in reality, we're fundamentally identical.
Biologically. If a baby from that time period got time travelled to today, they would probably die of modern day diseases... But if they didn’t, they would grow up just like us. Their brains were just like ours, it was their environment and knowledge which was different.
@@AndyHappyGuy And if a baby from our time when to them, THEY'D all die. So It'd live an existence of lonliness before dying to some outside causes or malnutrition.
Bede our biology, hopes, dreams, needs, wants, were all basically the same. They cried, suffered, lusted, loved, gazed at the stars, marveled at the sunrise, and questioned life itself just like we do. We are all the same. I wish more people could see that. And I’m glad that you asked so that you can too.
Ikr, if more people would aknowledge where humanity's come in a blink of an eye in historical times the world would be a better place on the other hand, knowing which problems are there is more useful than knowing what archievements have we reached
You think? I'm reminded of humanity's achievements every day, whenever I use a phone, computer, look up to the lights in the ceiling, or take a shower, maybe the problem is not so much that we don't get reminded of those achievements, but that we don't notice them anymore.
Our achievements have never been achieved before to our knowledge, failure is part or learning. Can u imagine a humanity that never failed. They wouldn't be human
videos like this are really good for me to watch whenever I feel too cynical and pessimistic about humanity, I love the colourful and detailed inventive animation style too
One thing Humans never had to deal with in 2 million years was overpopulation. Our first 1 billion people was only 200 years ago in 1820. Now we are at 8 billion and add 1 billion every 12 years. Going to plants with no food ,air and solar radiation protection will not save us.

I love human invention jumps. Like how the first heavier than air flight was in 1903. Less than 15 years later and we were dogfighting planes. And only 42 years after the first flight, we used a plane to drop nuclear bombs
7:10 my theory as to why they started placing seeds in the ground is most likely curiosity. Maybe they saw a squirrel or some other rodent put nuts in the ground and wanted to try it themselves, some people liked it and it became a thing in the background people did besides hunting, maybe during that time meat became scarce so they turned to agriculture more, and it just.. Stayed
I know that this is a joke comment, but I wanted to point something out. Our development of “clearer resolution” is on the opposite of an exponential graph. Basically, things have been more and more “clear” for decades, but nowadays, if you compare 1080p to 4K you don’t see much of a difference. If the future generations have 40k, although it is technically much higher, our eyes would register it as basically the same image. Sorry if this took up your time reading it, but I see this type of comment a lot and wanted to point it out ^^

Hey I thought it was inspiring! We are the same humans as thousands of years ago, just as we will be IN thousands of years. That doesn't mean everyone has to be an innovator; there's tons of room and need for the simple folk to work the land, live the simple life, and weave themselves into the legend of human tradition as well! If you can be Edison, great, but not everyone can. For thousands of years, people were ok just living the simple life, enjoying family and the comforts of nature, the rustling of the wind through the leaves in the trees, the songs of the birds, and the fruits of one's own successes.
Man.... seeing Kurzgesagt grow bigger and bigger each year is really inspiring. Thanks for teaching me since i was a kid! I will continue to watch your videos until the day i die.

Yup. Valhalla just didn't feel the same because they went with the generic hollywood Viking fantasy instead of basing it on history to show how far we've come, it could have been so special if they at-least tried to keep it realistic.
Kurzgesagt makes me awed at how far humanity has come, grateful towards those who came before us, and hopeful for our future in a way few other people, books or videos have done. It actually makes me feel like humanity is a great thing, which is an achievement.
Can we appreciate the beautiful soundtrack and visuals? Kurzgesagt never ceases to amaze me; they always push themselves to improve on their already wonderful quality and it's greatly appreciated EDIT: At the end of the vid; the long history of humanity and its progress + the beautiful music = a tear from me. The fact that in a couple of decades, the way we dress, the way we act, the way we entertain ourselves could change entirely makes me think that what I'm doing now might seem strange to them in the future.

However much I may love Kurzgesagt's science videos (Dyson spheres, stellar engines, tethers...), this one hits in such a deep way that it just doesn't compare. Everytime I watch it I cry. For me it says: look, this is what humanity is about. Despite its flaws, is there anything so beautiful anywhere?
The devastating news of everyday is inconsequential in the grand scale of human time. It hurts no less to hear what happens but remember it will always pass and humanity will improve. A hundred generations ago the Roman Empire ruled most of humanity with military might and fear and now it is gone, about 10 or so generations ago slavery was still rampant and now it is gone as well. Our time is limited and we cannot expect to answer all the questions about humanity in our lifetime. A lot of people including me have a hope that we will live to see humans evolve into a type 1 or a type 2 species but the sad truth is that we most likely won't. Instead of hoping we were born a few thousand years in the future we should enjoy the life we do have because we are lucky to be alive at all. Most people have a fear of being forgotten, we need to get over that fear. We need to know that every single one of us matters even if only to a few. Some of you reading this will go on to be multi millionaires but some may not even be recognized in society but what you need to know is that all that matters in your life is that YOU should be happy. History may remember a few but if you look at the big picture it is impossible to not be forgotten. In a few hundred years noone will know who Charlie Chaplin was or who Albert Einstein was. You need to know that no matter how much you do or contribute you will be forgotten and you need to accept that fact. This generation is lucky we are may be too early to explore the universe but we are right on time to pave the way. It isn't about us it's about the future. All you need to care about is making you, your friends and family happy. All in all phenomenal video Edit: Quite a few people commented saying that there are a lot of people who will not be forgotten but I shouldn't have been that specific with the time lol. What I meant was that eventually everyone will be forgotten. Like the big big picture like 2000-3000 years. My guess is noone alive will be remembered because the technology that they invented will either become obselete or so common that we won't even realize it was invented by someone (Most of us don't really know the guy who invented the wheel do we) and like that lights as we know it today will probably become obsolete along with the person who invented it. Sadly the only people that we can expect to remember are monsters not worth remembering and those we want to forget.
At best it would be like us reading about ancient mythological creatures like centaurs or sirens. Maybe they would believe we thought they were real, but probably not that they actually existed.
I don't think that'll happen. We leave too much almost-permanent info and data nowadays. They'll probably know it's a trading card game of ficticious creatures of a ficticious world. We just know so little about the past because of the lack of information preserved.
If school could just teach like this, school would actually be engaging, but as of now, this youtube channel taught me more in 25 minutes than 50 days from school 💀
School isn’t designed to teach you. It’s designed to make you a cog in the machine; to crush your will and dreams, and turn you into a lifeless but useful part of a grander mechanism. Some people still dream and strive for those dreams; and very few of those people succeed. Good luck 🍀👍
I have a time capsule that was buried in 1920 on my college campus and it will be opened in November! Kind of scary knowing that those people were unaware of the situation they would find themselves in. Before the Great Depression and WW2, as well as the Cold War. I mean it is 100 years. I’ll come back to this comment section on November 3rd to tell you what was in it.

@Weezy Dusting or perhaps less school is the solution, Finland has one of the best education systems in the world and they have less school time, less homework, smaller class rooms and more free time for kids to explore on their own. I used to believe that I was the one in control of my life, thatI was responsible whether I have a good career, a decent home and a decent position in the social hierarchy. Watching videos like this made me realize how most of what I have today wasn't because of me but was because of the thousands of years of humanity's progress. There had been roughly 100 billion humans that ever existed 90 billion of them now dead. No matter where they're from, what culture they had, what timeline they existed. They laughed, they loved, they had families, friends, enemies, they had fears, they had their dreams. No matter which timeline, culture, society, or technology any of us and those before us, there were always those constant things that always stayed and defined us as humans. Every convenience, technology, food, ubiquitous things, the smallest of things that no one ever appreciates anymore like the phone you're probably using right now, these were all a result of process that took thousands of years through humanity's journey.
I hate when they try to push an agenda like that, yeah I bet living as a gatherer/nomad/hunter is easier than living in the same place and near your food and water
For me it’s quite self-explanatory: Convenience. I’d rather take care of a field of known seeds and a few cattle, instead of having to hunt for wild animals and put my life in danger.

I love your work so much!
The scientists I've met were actually very optimistic. They believe they can help change our heading and create a better future.
i mean, aren't scientists supposed to answer questions, what ever branch it is. i think the reason why they focus on the wrongdoings is because they want to lessen the chance of giving the wrong answer
It’s the average person who is pessimistic

@@ShihammeDarc I like that optimism, and I believe in that wholeheartedly :)
Isn't that crazy? We all come onto this world for a purpose, we were never purposeless.
Yup
Well said.
Omg. That’s beautiful
"Hey, come take a look at this."
"What is it?"
"You know those tiny hard things that grow on plants?"
"Yeah."
"Well last year, I stuck a couple in the ground, and now when I come back to check on them, there are plants there! The same plants that grow the same tiny hard things!"

Midnight Gear How are we fundamentally identical?
Biologically. If a baby from that time period got time travelled to today, they would probably die of modern day diseases... But if they didn’t, they would grow up just like us. Their brains were just like ours, it was their environment and knowledge which was different.
@@AndyHappyGuy And if a baby from our time when to them, THEY'D all die. So It'd live an existence of lonliness before dying to some outside causes or malnutrition.

We are all the same. I wish more people could see that. And I’m glad that you asked so that you can too.
There are few reminders of humanity's achievements in a world where every single day you're only reminded of humanity's mistakes and flaws.
It's sad really. I honestly hope that we actually do come together to over come this. Even if we don't live to see it.
Ikr, if more people would aknowledge where humanity's come in a blink of an eye in historical times the world would be a better place
on the other hand, knowing which problems are there is more useful than knowing what archievements have we reached

Guys we can't experience everything. All in all phenomenal video
Edit: Quite a few people commented saying that there are a lot of people who will not be forgotten but I shouldn't have been that specific with the time lol.
Thank you man
This comment is beautiful, thank you
🥺❤️❤️❤️❤️🌱
You can experience the universe within :) maybe it's not so different then the one out there
People will still know who Albert Einstein was in a few hundred years, just like we know who Isaac Newton is
I, for one, am excited when the future generations find our Pokemon cards and wonder why such wondrous creatures left no fossils or evidence behind
their reactions to the legendary pokemon descriptions would be hilarious
Yveltal would scare the shit out of them
At best it would be like us reading about ancient mythological creatures like centaurs or sirens. Maybe they would believe we thought they were real, but probably not that they actually existed.
There going to think were dum for using our imagination
I don't think that'll happen. We leave too much almost-permanent info and data nowadays. They'll probably know it's a trading card game of ficticious creatures of a ficticious world. We just know so little about the past because of the lack of information preserved.

A good video to show your near and dear ones. It wasn't just about how we evolved, but rather than how humans innovated themselves.
If school could just teach like this, school would actually be engaging, but as of now, this youtube channel taught me more in 25 minutes than 50 days from school 💀

K Hype my History teacher doesn’t even know our textbook well Lol
School isn’t designed to teach you. It’s designed to make you a cog in the machine; to crush your will and dreams, and turn you into a lifeless but useful part of a grander mechanism. Some people still dream and strive for those dreams; and very few of those people succeed. Good luck 🍀👍
A Kurzgesagt video costs months of work, no random teacher is able to do that.

Whenever I learned about things like this in history class I always thought that they were some emotionless people but this shows me that they were people just like us. This is the best education channel out there and gives me a new perspective with every new video.
Yeah.. All the subjects taught in the school are actually interesting and beautiful.. It's just that it is in the format of "study" makes it look boring..
@@riyank5238 I don't think school is the best place to learn new and interesting things anymore, quite the opposite in most cases.
They were certainly emotional, just like most animals, and in fact the mostly physiologically modern human has persisted for about 200,000 years.
@Weezy Dusting or perhaps less school is the solution, Finland has one of the best education systems in the world and they have less school time, less homework, smaller class rooms and more free time for kids to explore on their own.
My personal experience with school was lots of yelling, lots of stress, lots of bad teachers who enjoyed wasting time and humiliating children and did most of my actual studying and learning on my own not in or around school but everyone seems to have a different experience it seems.

Awww. . I'm moved. . This is my favorite video of Kursgskkusart so far!
Kursgskkusart? You good, man?
Kurzgesagt: "Why would humans accept poorer food and harder lives?"
Also Kurzgesagt: "Crops allowed beer to be produced."
Adriel R Yes, alcohol is just fermented crops
Ancient Slavs never went back to hunting and gathering after finding out how to get beer
Class society was and is an imposition...
This video is so good I cannot express how good it made me feel being a human after watching depressing news all day. Background music was so good by the way!
I agree, the music was amazing.
But humans couldn't be a more destructive and disgusting animal. Get real and embrace misanthrope instead - the type of thinking that may be our only hope in bringing about any positive change I believe 👍🏼

People in past seemed to rejoice newborns more compared to now where many see them as burdens
@@areb4281 back then in communities of only a few hundred at absolute maximum, newborns would be quite rare, maybe only a few per year, whereas now its constant and everywhere, so maybe people just see it as a number rather than actual people.
@@areb4281 I see it as the opposite. back then a newborn was just another body, one of 16 kids meant to contribute to the group, now kids are born for the sake of existing, not for what they can provide
I suggest putting something in your backyard that's popular today, so that others in the future will laugh at it. Edit: spelling.
