The shift lag, even in sport mode, is due to the fact you were light on the throttle. The system senses throttle pressure and if you're light on it - even in sport - it isn't as aggressive because you aren't aggressive on the gas. As you increase throttle pressure the system senses that and is much quicker on the shift response. This is true of all modern automatic transmission controllers. Otherwise, great video as always!
While this is true, the A8 transmission in this generation's Corvette is still a horrible one. The A10 in the Camaro is a good example of what a transmission should be like in the Corvette.
I get that for cars like this a lot of people would want a manual, but what's wrong with the people that would prefer an automatic? Not everyone wants to shift gears and I'm not saying it's bad to like manuals either. I just hate it when people push others' opinions about what transmission the car should only come with or that their opinion is stupid. Like for me I'd like an auto Grand Sport because I like to cruise around while driving and to have the option to use it on the track if I feel like driving to Laguna Seca.
Nothing wrong with wanting to cruise around but why waste money on a sports car than? There are hundreds of other car models to pick from if u don't care about having an engaging driving experience.
They forgot to put the side skirts and splitter on, which half of the Chevy dealers don't realize are stock. I had to point this out to my dealer and they had to get them from Chevy.
11.8 in the 1/4 mile...we've come a long way in just 10 years, let alone 20 to 30 years when the Corvette had 230 HP back in 1986 and only 205 HP in 1984!!
All US performance cars too a dump in the late 70s to mid 90s. Go back further to the 60s and early 70s when performance was king. Cars had the power but not the chassis and grip to handle the power efficiently. In essence you had 12 and 13 sec cars running high 13s and low 14s because of the power loss through spinning the tires and in some cases inefficient 2, 3 and 4 spd transmission gearing.
What a beautiful car. Excellent review. I've been watching your reviews for a while now and they are by far the best reviews on CZcams. Keep it up, love your channel!
Thank you for being as unbiased as you can be in your reviews, my friend. Like Jay Leno, you show that all cars are cool in their own ways. It's tough to discuss cars with some people because it leads to a silly argument. But anyway, I'm thankful for your reviews and look forward to them when I'm online.
If I could afford it I'd buy this one, to me, these Corvettes are the best bang for the buck. Exotic, great seams, excellent exotic speed at a steal of a price! I'm just to po for that!
Great intro. One gorgeous car. Those rims are spectacular with that body color. Intake, exhaust and a tune would put you well over 500 hp which is plenty.
I like my Z06, but you are right there is drama with it. It can get tail happy even on straight always. . Fun but can be scary with the insane amount of torque. Are they marking the GSs up though? The Z06 price has come down.
Yeah left in auto mode the camaro and vette 8speed shifts are very fast but the the response from the paddles are terribly slow. The click noise is annoying too. I had a 16 camaro 1ss and the slow responding noisy paddles ruined it. Ive had a 17’2ss camaro manual about 6 months now and couldn’t be happier.
The delays on those up shifts is staggering. I’ve heard that complaint in other reviews but I’ve never seen it demonstrated - wow. Good insight. Thankfully, I prefer manual anyhow - but this automatic makes manual that much more compelling.
I think the base non z51 manual is the most fun on the street you can break the 285/35 mpss tires away at will but it still handles great and is the lightest option with just dual mode exhaust i got mine for under $50k after negotiation the grand sport with automatic is silly cant really track it not meant for the street and can barely break the tires loose but i am sure they sell plenty
I still like the 8 speed. It's super smooth in drive, shifts are practically unnoticeable and the car always seems to be in the right gear. Yeah, the paddles aren't the quickest but they're definitely still fun to play with. People constantly gripe on the 8 speed and praise manuals but look who crosses the finish line first. Despite that I know I wouldn't want to deal with a clutch driving in traffic everyday.
the actual shift time is quick, it's just the response time from when you click the paddle to the trans actually shifting, that's what makes it seem slow, but great review Matt!
2 things: 1. My favorite color for a C7 GS I've seen so far 2. the C7 GS should NOT come with auto. If you need that grip, you need to be able to shift
Thank You, Matt for an awesome TEST DRIVE!! You're right though, one should opt for the manual! And, the color is gorgeous too... So, essentially a Z51 package with more refined suspension... Cool Beans🇺🇸 I'll take it
you dont do as many reviews like other youtubers but the ones you do are very informative. I like watching ypur videos because they go in depth into one would want to know if buying such car.
I don't care for that 8 speed at all. I drove it in the new SS Camaro and was quite unimpressed. The paddle shift lag is worse than a lot of economy cars.
"worse than a lot of economy cars"....I had quite the opposite impression in both the new SS and C7. Full-throttle up shifts are BLISTERING FAST. The ONLY other auto I can compare it to is the ZF-8HP that Chrysler is using. Of which the 8L90e is slightly faster IMO. And it should be...because the clutch assemblies, hydraulic pump and valve body are much closer together...making them more efficient. Pedestrian shifts have somewhat of a lag...but for cruising purposes, that doesn't bother me. Make no mistake, one of the best autos on the market. Good reason why the new 10spd shared between Ford and GM is mostly based on the 8L90e.
Great Video, A lot of the Grand Sports come with Napa Leather as an upgrade from the standard Stingray leather package, giving that softer feel which you noted.
I dirve a GS manual this week. Im still got a smile on my face. I never thought I'd want a manual but that's that way I'd go. I loved your reaction on your face. It was like mine.
beautiful car......sadly yesterday my mom and i were driving i was looking at a brand new grand sport a older couple... they were getting over and clipped a hyundai elantra and the elantra slipped off the break and on the gas and i guess went through there bumper hit the tire and shot up in the air maybe 35 degrees sideways then slammed back down.....i literally do not know how it was possible wish i had it on camera
Choose the Free Manual. It's silly using paddles on the road than a Race Track. I feel all Sports Cars and Sedans should offer the Free Manual for us drivers who love them and the direct connection to the drivetrain and simple service than paying for it and financing it with 2K+ automatics.... To select "D".
The Grand Sport is the nicest looking model there is. What a great video. Omg, I love this color. I’m getting this model and color for spring. I just live it! Thanks.
Great review, Matt. Was wondering if you were able to include some pricing info in your reviews? Not many automotive youtubers do it in their reviews and I think it would be more informative to people trying to compare vehicles in the same sement/class.
the problems are very real... After readind MotorTrend November issue's article by Christian Seabaugh (long term test) , I was astonished by what was wrong with the car..... Great engine.. PERIOD... the rest, rattles and My link/instrument cluster screen ( they had to be replaced) cabin noise, ect...... not for my buck !!!
These Grand Sports are Gorgeous! even though they don't have the supercharged LT4 LOL but....I have seen a lot of these GrandSports with some options, with stickers for more than a base Z06! I totally understand the purpose of the GrandSport. If you are looking for one of these but can find a Z06 for $75-80k why not get it! hahahaha :D
The 8 spd auto in manual mode reacts to how heavy you are on throttle. It's not going to give u quick upshifts when ur Sunday driving. Go hard on throttle and it's way quicker.
Wow that color looks awesome same with that red z06 you reviewed a while back the corvette has some sick color choice that's for sure. I think the grand sport would be a good buy because with the money you saved you can buy a turbo or better supercharger if you want and then you have the z06 looks and probably more power than the z06
The automatic is faster and shifts faster than a manual yet there are still complaints that it lags. I'm not saying that the auto is better or more fun but why do people complain about the lag if the auto shifts faster than a manual? Is it just the disconnect? Or are people just not used to it? *owner of a sporty auto, sporty manual, and dct
First tine anyone said the automatic shifts were slow under full throttle but then again the guy admits it has 10 mi on it so full throttle wasn’t attempted
Speaking from experience with GM Transmission not shifting as quickly as you anticipate. I have a camaro V6 and it has paddleshifters as well but i read in the manual that the purpose of the paddles is to limit the final gear the transmission shifts to (ERS). Using it as a regular paddle shifter becomes useless because even though you up shift the computer still thinks it can stay in that gear longer. downshifts work quicker because it will shift quicker once you tell the car what gear is the top limit. www.chevrolet.com/content/dam/Chevrolet/northamerica/usa/nscwebsite/en/Home/Ownership/Manuals%20and%20Videos/02_pdf/2k14camaro.pdf look at page 9-29
Thanks for making this review! Just wondering, did you have to tell them anything when you went to test drive it? I took our 2013 Mercedes S550 to the chevy dealership cause I was interested in a z51. They refused to let me test drive because they said potential owners wouldn't want any miles on their Corvettes but I think they just said that because I'm 21. Currently looking at some F-types (which the Jaguar dealership let me test drive) but I'm just wondering if everyone gets the same treatment at the Chevy dealership
+Harrison C I am friends with the owner of the dealership so we arranged it in advance. I don't go into car dealerships and ask to test drive. Some dealers are protective of their sports cars. Some Subaru dealerships are the same way about WRXs.
same thing happened to me I'm 21 and took my 2016 infiniti red sport. They told me it was fine to come in and drive but I guess when they saw how young I am they changed their mind
Nice video review! It is my dream car and the only mines point you noted is because that is nit that top model speedwise I believe is a bussiness extragedy by the manufactures.... I would to be able to buy the Grand sport tomorrow!
Joshua Vazquez Probably thinking of the 10 speed. Either way, the shifts themselves aren't slow. It's just the reaction time the computer takes to analyze it. If you timed the actual shifts they're probably pretty similar.
Cory R I looked it up and it was the 8 speed, but yes, they claimed the shifts themselves were faster than the pdk but didn't say anything about response time.
joey gonzalez Yeah, people just gripe about the response time. What really matters is the shift time, which is really quick on these. That new 10 speed has both though which will be really sweet.
Ah no one does 3.6 in those, almost no journalist could do the claimed 0-60 of the base stingray, and you don't need a supercar to beat it lol, more like E63 amg... And why didn't they put nice paddles and shifting logic, most corvette sold, are auto, you'd think they would invest in it more
Haha, well I would hope the well educated engineers that GM has on staff would realize how dumb it looks compared to how other manufacturers have theirs designed and say "Hey you know what guys? Let's change the sweep speed to be a bit quicker" I guess they don't feel like it warrants their attention or time.
Yeah by 7 seconds a lap, and the Grand Sport is still cheaper by about $20k.Porsche really, really needs to step up their pricing game because their cars are way too expensive for what you get now.
The Grand Sport is definitely the one that I would pick. Nice compromise between the stingray and the ZO6.
hahaha!
Same. It's the perfect balance and won't overheat like the Z06.
Zack Lewine looks the same, all of them do. Z06 stingray and grand sport
you must be blind, def a distinction between the Z06 and the Stingray lol
That color is SICK.

Mainly cause the A8 itself has had a good amount of problems and in the long run will be the less reliable transmission.

Good job on being one of the very first to review this car in full detail, Matt! Love the color combinations on this particular Vette.
Beautiful car. The Grand Sport will be a hot seller for Chevy. I would still go Z06 though.
***** No need to be rude.

Scott S Does your engine overheating? Daily drive?
You should review StreetSpeed717's Z06 now thats its gonna be pushing 700+ whp
especially cause he already "reviewed" the Duramax
He should do a full review on the duramax

I never did any full throttle upshifts so I can't dispute that, but they were quite slow at part throttle, both in normal and sport mode.

I still prefer manuals though....they're just more fun IMO...even if the new autos are faster.
Oh so do I. I wouldn't have one without a manual (mine is).
I see you've been in the gym getting bigger Matt! Happy for you
Great Video, A lot of the Grand Sports come with Napa Leather as an upgrade from the standard Stingray leather package, giving that softer feel which you noted.
To me, the C7 GS, seems a lot more reminiscent of the C6 Z06, which is what makes it more appealing than the C7 Z06, in my mind.
I like your quick karate chop like arm motions in the beginning of all your videos.

FYI - this video - just came up in a "Google Opinions" survey.... thought you'd like to know! Another great review btw...
Why does it look so jacked up? Wheel well gap
Great review! Any chance you'd be able to review a 2017 fusion sport?
I'm hoping Ford sends me one!
yes please review that!!!!
+subaruwrxfan yes please fusion sport
Or 2017 Lincoln MKZ w/ 400 hp?
comfy seats???!! as long as you are 130lbs or LESS ,

that's the color I want if I ever get a corvette, midnight purple ;)
Great review, Matt. Was wondering if you were able to include some pricing info in your reviews? Not many automotive youtubers do it in their reviews and I think it would be more informative to people trying to compare vehicles in the same sement/class.
I love the paint scheme. If they did that with black and red instead of purple, that's what I would get! Great review!

The car has some really nice touches. Should also be interesting to see what the tuners do to this since it's naturally aspirated.
I'd spec black wheels, sweet color.
If you buy a C7, & don't get the manual transmission, then shame on you (unless you have some physical limitations)
he's more of a ford fanatic and would probably go for a gt350 when he gets the chance and has more money
Alberto 9324, good on him. I hope he gets the GT350. Ford outdone themselves with the 16 Shelby. It's an outstanding machine
H Mack
its honestly my dream car next to a gt3
list___
1. gt3 ( rs why not both are cool )
2.gt350
3.240sx
AGRRED ON EVERYTHING!!
Klasse Act , right on man
Nice car but I'm happy with my 17 Super Sport Camaro 6 spd man.
Another great review by SubaruwrxFan 👍
An automatic Vette is not a true Vette to me! I still believe for its quality in terms of performance..
in your opinion, which one is better the zo6 or grand sport?
I could definitely see this guy working for a company like Motor Trend
When is the scat pack review gonna be released
Next week.
Legend has it, that if you are early #subaruwrxfan will reply.
Haha hi!
Hey man thanks for the reply :) I've been subscribed for so long and I really love the content that you provide your subscribers! Keep it up!!

that's why you should never buy a NEW car with more than 6 miles (MAX) on the odometer
Wow that color looks awesome same with that red z06 you reviewed a while back the corvette has some sick color choice that's for sure. What a beautiful color! Pops in the sun!
Love that color!
That paint color is sick.
Always forget some of these new cars have hotspots. Said wifi active and was thrown off a second. How much is that monthly
Great review!, fantastic car. Can't wait to get one.
Very nice car,I think the StingRay is good for me.

You should do a review on that white '98-'02 Camaro SS with the livery in the background in the intro
Thanks for making this review! Just wondering, did you have to tell them anything when you went to test drive it? COOL Review: 2017 Corvette Grand Sport
The Grand Sport is the perfect Corvette for me!
Was about to trade in my 18 zl1 for this to lower my payments a bit , but that lag is horrible compared to the 10speed.
Just noticed the speedo on those back roads. hahaha! Epic editing.
dam how much for that corvette lol
I mean the old version 2013
Nice color combo there.
Nice video review! It is my dream car and the only mines point you noted is because that is nit that top model speedwise I believe is a bussiness extragedy by the manufactures.... I would to be able to buy the Grand sport tomorrow!
They should have put the 505hp 427 in this...
Manual or automatic? help me decide lol
Wow now these are the type of cars to be reviewed!! Nice video bro
so the gs has an identical body to the z06?
Grandpa color 😭😭 Great Car 😁 Digging the Pontiac GrandAm Radio
Great job bro! I was almost going to pay the fee to watch motortrends review on this car
Interesting I heard somewhere that the 8 speed was supposed to be as quick as Porsches PDK
Joshua Vazquez chevrolet advertised that when the 8 speed first came out, but it's not anywhere close to being true

That super slow gauge sweep on startup just looks so dumb to me. They need to speed that thing up.
its GM what do you expect?
Haha, well I would hope the well educated engineers that GM has on staff would realize how dumb it looks compared to how other manufacturers have theirs designed and say "Hey you know what guys? Let's change the sweep speed to be a bit quicker" I guess they don't feel like it warrants their attention or time.
Why are gauge sweeps even a thing? What do they do? Calibration? Show?
So...y'all drive Toyotas and you are binching about the startup gauge sweep? Let me guess....Snowflakes??
It used to be like stupid fast on the C6
Love how u say this back road here. Lol route 8 haha.
I actually made it in one of your videos. Lol
I'm debating the z06 and the GTR R35 love both cars . But don't know which one to get . I don't know a lot about cars . Need some suggestions
i'd take a grand sport with a lingenfelter turbocharger
Are you going to get a power pack upgrade from Ford? top package puts you at 472 horsepower and does not void your warranty
P.s. the fob is a Cadillac parts bin accesory basicly any Cadillac has one
Good review as always matt!
What wheels are these? Can't tell. Nickel-plated aluminum? Machined-Face Aluminum?
So when you're in automatic you still have to shift?
Stephen Jr Rios lol no
James Harden Pillow No, but you have the option to.
Cayman GT4? This thing put away the GT4 at the Lightning Lap this year.
Yeah by 7 seconds a lap, and the Grand Sport is still cheaper by about $20k.Porsche really, really needs to step up their pricing game because their cars are way too expensive for what you get now.
Id still take the vette
When I look at that color I think of prune juice .
I'll lie to rent one from you guys how much for one day lol or a for a week or month
Review the c2 and c3 next to it!
you should test drive a 2017 camaro ZL1 when it comes out
