  • Brent Artman is an artist in Colorado. He takes a large piece of copper and cleans it until it's shiny. He uses reduction flame to remove oxidation from the piece and create line work on the copper. Once he has his pattern mapped out, he can start to change the color of the design with the fire. Once the piece is complete, he seals it with a clear coat so the colors don’t continue to oxidize.

I remember doing something like this with my Dad. My father was a painter who liked sometimes to engrave designs in small sheets of copper, heat them over a flame and then add them to his paintings. Sometimes he would give me pieces of leftover copper to engrave designs of my own and then we would heat them over the kitchen stove and watch the rainbows appear. I hadn't thought about that in years, until I saw this video.
