  • Are martial arts Zen or Taoism in disguise? Can Christians practice karate, judo, taekwondo or other Asian arts without being exposed to Buddhism or pantheism? Keith Yates takes a look at the history, philosophy and religious influences on the arts. If you follow Jesus he says you can safely learn martial arts.

One of the first people who told me about the Bible and God was a Korean kickboxing/kung fu teacher. He lived at his studio - it had a little room with a bed in it that he slept in. Came there one night, can’t remember why, but he let me in and started to talking to me about God. It was almost like one of those scenes from a classic martial arts movie with a wise teacher - but instead of slinging Confucian cliches, he was talking about biblical things. Never forgot that conversation.

Keith Yates validates that Christians may train in the martial arts, while debunks some of the falicies often discouraging or detouring them from doing so whole-heartedly. When I became a Christian, I was told many times by genuine and sincere Christians that I needed to stop training in martial arts to honor God. For a time, I stopped training to appease them and self-reflect. Flash forward a "few years, " today I teach martial arts in public schools, two men's recovery programs, and in several churches here in Brazil. At the peak of our outreaches we 100's of students. We have a waiting list of schools and churches that want our program to reach at-risk teens and adults. The door could not be more open!
I like to say that martial arts is the vehicle we use to share God with people from all walks of life. After all, everyone is fighting something. A biblical martial arts curriculum gives us the opportunity to help people to be equipped to win the physical, mental, and spiritual battles we all face. I understand if someone for conscience sake stops practicing martial arts, but please be careful not to speak for God to other people that might not have the same conviction. My message for my brother or sister that desires assurance, may you bravely continue to "Fight the good fight." May God be with you and empower you for His service.

Yes. Agreed. I studied Tae Kwon Do, Jujitsu, Shaolin Kung Fu and Wing Chun. The only issue I had was I negotiated with my jujitsu teacher to sit in the back of the class when it began because I didn't want bow to the founder's picture on the wall and I didn't want to disrupt the class by not doing so. Other than that, there's never been a conflict.

It is good that he respected that. Personally, I don't think such a thing is idolatry as it is simply showing respect to the founder. Idolatry also requires intent. No one is claiming that the founder is God or a god. That being said, no instructor should force a student to go against his conscience.

@@TheThinkersBible Yes, exactly. It takes a good teacher to be able to figure out a way to explain things so that they can be understood by both a group and individuals. When someone helped me finally figure out what scrupulosity meant, I had an easier time discerning right from wrong when it came to more complicated things. That is because it was based on an irrational fear of displeasing God which made me think almost everything was sinful. When I learned to trust God more, I understood that certain sins required intent - such as idolatry, instead of it just being an external action.

First, do you have you students take time for meditation, perhaps very brief, at the beginning and/or end of class? Second, do you ever guide your students in prayer in the context of your martial arts classes? Thank you in advance for your consideration. --JP Mitchell

I primarily teach in a YMCA and ironically, since it is the Young Men's CHRISTIAN Association, they don't want overt Christian prayers in class. I am free to discuss my faith however and that has given me the chance to share with many over the years. I do pray when I teach in a church setting or at a Christian conference of course. We sometimes do some brief breathing exercises at the end of class but I don't call it meditation and I avoid using phrases like "use your Chi power" or "blend with his Ki" and instead will say "concentrate mentally, emotionally, and physically to increase your focus and effectiveness."

I mean you have a dragon statue behind you, c’mon. The dragon heavily symbolizes Satan.
I think what we don’t focus on is that Martial Arts ( Art of War ) is a worship of War. Now can we Biblically say that Jesus agrees with developing weapons for war?
I love training, but a serious conversation needs to be had here. I think we all need to consult God & The Bible on this one. Otherwise we will look to affirm what our hearts wish to be True.

Hello Mr. Yates, your video was informative and i had a couple questions. My first one is that, in Taekwondo there are the Taegeuk patterns which are sets of movements that end up resembling the trigrams that (from what I understand) are symbols in korean divination. And they are named after the trigrams too as im sure you know. So my question is would it be okay for a Christian to still practice and perform these patterns despite what they might "represent"? And on a side note how should a Christian view the yin yang symbol itself? I'm probably overthinking some of this😂 but just wondering.
    -Thanks!

    • @KeithYates
      @KeithYates  Před 3 lety +1

I don't see a problem with doing forms that have either an obscure symbolism in their direction of movement (incidentally, I have not seen references to divinations) or even in their names (some patterns were named after religious figures like Won Hyo). While the yin/yang has historically been a symbol of Taoism it has become almost ubiquitous as merely an artistic element in Asian themed graphics and the like. It is on the South Korean flag after all and I doubt most Christians practicing TKD would consider that flag an offense to their faith. Now some symbols have become so attached to objectionable philosophy (take the swastika for example) that no-one should appropriate them. But your questions are valid and every Christian should think through these issues.

The problem with your point is, that there‘s many worldly Martial Arts Dojo‘s out there who don‘t care if you‘re Christian or not. But there might be only a few Martial Arts Dojo‘s that respect a Christian not wanting to bow down to a picture of a dead teacher, or want to give glory to a philosophical way. Christians only know one way, Jesus Christ. We want to learn Self Defense for protecting our Families, Friends and Neighbours. We don‘t want to be in an active violent position. We also don‘t want to learn any Philosophy, Moral-Teaching, Energyconcept or Spirit that comes not from the Bible. There‘s too many Dojo‘s out there who follow these Eastern Mystic traditions even though they have never been originally in these Self Defense Techniques. We don‘t want to do Yoga or learn how to use the „Chi“ Force. We have the Holy Spirit, only want to Glory God and want to protect our loved ones and anybody who needs protection on the streets that‘s it.

I am a martial artist and a follower of Jesus. I have studied many arts, but focus primarily now on internal Chinese arts. These arts are very healthy, deep breathing and dynamic movement is they way our bodies were designed to move and develop. “Fearfully and wonderfully made!” Further, Jesus said to turn the other cheek, but He also said there’s a time to sell you cloak and buy a sword. Jesus never said it was wrong to defend yourself or those you love, or your country (if it’s truly for freedom). Remember too the David, the man after God’s own heart, slayed his 10,000’s while Saul slayed his 1000’s! Remembered the psalms that God is mighty in battle! He doesn’t tell His people that self defense is wrong. He does tell us to love our enemies and do good to them. He tells us to be long suffering and to not act out of anger. He adds Leo tells us to seek justice love mercy and walk in humility. These are tenets of being a benevolent warrior. But make no doubt, our a lord is a warrior like no other!

I agree 100%, excellent points in this video. I've been a Christian for 40 years and a Martial Artist for 35 years. I have endured many a 'lecture' from well meaning Christians who literally know nothing about the martial arts attempting to 'educate' me.
The only thing that I would add here is if you walk into a martial arts school and they have a shrine, Shinto (commonly Japanese) or Buddhist, then go elsewhere.
Where I was taking Judo it is common to bow twice at the end of class, the commands are in Japanese and no one including the instructors really knew what they are saying. So I looked it up and the first bow was to the Shinto Shrine and the second bow was to the instructors. So I brought this up. 1st there is no Shinto Shrine set up here so no need to do that, 2nd the Judo class is in the basement of a Pentecostal church where many students attended. The practice of bowing to the Shrine was dropped, that simple.

(Not sure what you think of this)
As far as Turning the other cheek goes, I believe its more of an attitude of non violence to try one's utmost to walk away and/or de-escalate bad situations
Also If its a physical turning of the other cheek, martial Arts may even make it easier due to the strengthening that comes with any training
Lastly I think the biggest question is The Lord still more important and does one still rely on Him more or is he/she becoming more self reliant and thinking of Him less.

The traditional arm bands have prayers in them and the head wrap “mekong” is what priests would wear and they had an amulet for protection in fights. I think in certain instances (like the particular art or school that teaches and what they espouse) it can come down to a case of liberty, or "food offered to idols" (1 Cor. 8). There are martial arts that are embedded in or tied to the occult (e.g. Pencak Silat and the occult Indonesia, Tai Chi and harnessing inner energy etc...) and most Christians you would think (depending on their journey/walk with Christ) would have enough discernment to walk away and even shun. However, as a christian I would argue this: Most martial arts are folly, or down right foolishness and it has all the inroads to idolatry. Let's take shotokan karate for instance. Most practitioners are putting all their love, attention, care and effort (P.L.A.C.E) into an art that demands their time and effort into preparing for a single moment of time in their life (violent encounter) and it fails to deliver them in the time of trouble if it does happen and it may never even happen. Theory without application is mental masturbation (you may think a true Christian cant say this but I can in its right context), and if you gain a false sense of confidence or security in the technique/art and in your own strength and abilities, then you can see how you are not leaning or depending on the power of the Holy Spirit. If hours upon hours and upon years of time, love and effort is invested in a martial art (whether steeped in mysticism or not) that is premised upon giving you the tools to survive (or even "thrive" because you're such a dangerous weapon) in a violent encounter, then you have essentially you worshipped and idol that was, and may not be able to deliver. So in conclusion, liberty aside (and discernment), most martial arts are useless idols that makes most people look like fools. I am not pacifist, but the Lord must come first, as he does determine the days of your life and whether or not the hairs of your head are touched. The Lord is a jealous Lord, and will not tolerate idols in the lives of believers. Hope this helps and God bless.

Tai Chi Chuan actually means "Grand Ultimate Fist." The chi in the name doesn't refer to the "life force." Still, many practitioners associate their practice with Taoist philosophy and the idea of a universal energy, kinda like "Star Wars." I think one can practice Tai Chi as just an exercise and a martial art (albeit a slowly performed one). Really it all boils down to the instructor and student. If you want to infuse a spiritual emphasis into the art you can also do it with a hard-style such as Karate. And if you want to practice as just exercise and self-defense you can do that too. If maintain your faith in Christ and stay away from worshiping the "universe" as a substitute for God then it's no more dangerous than doing the exercises that a physical therapist might give you (and a bunch of them are actually pretty close to Tai Chi stretches).

James 3:8-9 (with your body and MA technique, you are definitely designing to inflict pain and suffering against another man that is made in the image of God). Also, "Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him." 1 John 3:15 Good luck in "thinking" you are not hating someone or disassociating an "attack" mentality against the image of God (another man) when you are executing technique to maim, disable, and/or murder someone. Sorry, seen and been in it, and know it works against your sanctification. Question, can you "give it up"? Would you give it up for Jesus? Would you put Christ first, and reflect Him with all men? What and WHO comes first in your life?

Ive read the Larson book. The martial arts are evident in the old Testament especially around the times of King David and his elite band of war generals in second Samuel. Jesus is the Lion of Judah. Theres a reason "lion" was chosen amid all the other animal forms. Asia and the far east versions of the fighting arts definitely popularized it in the western hemisphere courtesy of the media and Hollywood. Its attached life philosophies about man harnessing nature does entertain demagoguery and that went over well in the sixties when the youth divorced the conservative fifties to look for identity not in the Bible which many thought was only Catholic, but the far east with their Zen expanded mind meditation, yoga, and bongs seemed exotic enough. Don't forget woodstock , the Beatles and their journalese to India, and LSD. But that ended with Charles Manson. I remember the film "Bad Day at Black Rock" in the fifties. . The judo Spencer Tracy put on Earnest Borgnine . All fighting. No esoteric philosophy. But no mention of anything Biblical. With Jesus, the chains of rudiments and vain philosophies are broken although they still rattle at times. Discern the difference while you learn how to defend yourself and your family.

As it for sports, developing habit of dicipline, of course yes. But when it comes to religion issue, just find another martial who suits you.
I really hate if Pencak Silat or Tarung Drajat practicioners trying to connnect religion with martial arts.

Boxing, wrestling, catch as catch can, glima, shwingen, savate, Basque kick fighting, Cornish wrestling, HEMA, fencing, Bataireacht, canne de combat, single stick, pankration, combat hopak, there are many styles of martial arts invented in Europe without Asian influence.

I actually do think that European fencing is deeply connected with Roman Catholicism. Why? Because the culture influences the art - and martial arts are an artform. There are principles within fighting influenced by the culture, such as being a gentleman in your approach to fighting; not fighting to kill needlessly; etc... Of course it can be corrupted - such as those who fought in duals. I am not saying that fencers have to be Catholic but that one cannot sever the root easily of where it came from.
However, something can be replanted by drafting. So, even though I do believe that many Asian martial arts are rooted in their philosophies of the time, such things can be baptized by the salt of the gospel. This is especially so since there is no pagan error without some truth in it. As long as the error is removed then it is fine. It is also good to remember that the body can only move in so many ways. If someone does yoga moves for exercise with no intention of worshiping Hindu gods I fail to see how that can be idolatry - but if the spiritual practices are kept in then there might be some dangers.
Vatican II documents speak well of these things by declaring certain opinions on the matter as from now on certain. Basically, anything from a culture that is not inherently sinful is allowed to be practiced - although the bishops obviously have to discern how this can be done safely in some cases. This is good because it makes it easier to evangelize people - that they can, if they wish, retain their culture while baptizing it in Christ. This has always been believed by many theologians, but now it is considered infallible.
I used to be quite scrupulous about these things, but having it properly explained to me has helped me trust God more. Indifference and relativism is not the same though.

Didn't the templars during the crusades had a martial way? They were in a religious war though. I'm implying, despite the ugly parts of Catholicism and catholic teachings, part of Christianity knew how to fight with spiritual and combat training side by side. The Martial way can be in different and many forms and doesn't have to be with strikes and grappling techniques.

What fellowship does light have with darkness? Does not the bible tell Christians to be set apart? At the end of the day it comes down to a spiritual factor, as much as u try to justify it light has no fellowship with darkness & this is exactly why the Lord Jesus Christ said many are called but FEW ARE CHOSEN.

dojo in martial arts means 'place of enlightment'. Upon entering the dojo or 'temple' you must bow first then bow to the master/ sensei. That in and of itself is sufficient to see that this is not only not of God but in direct contrary to God's word. Though shall call no man your master save the Lord Christ. Thou shall bow down to no other idols save the Lord Christ. The sounds made in kata/ martial arts are the summoning of enertgied and its not the holy spirit. For we fight not against flesh n blood but against principlaities and powers of darkness. If your're a true christian, you have a spiritual calling not one from the hinduism or eastern universe energies. Lie not to your own heart. Seek first the kingdom of God and all these things shall be added unto you. Fact:- we can dedicate a large portion of our life to learn, practice and live martial arts all our life and never even have anyone attacking us in real life. what a waste. Exercise - yes. Martial arts( deeply rooted in hinduism eastern philosophies) No!

    • @KeithYates
      @KeithYates  Před 2 měsíci

The Greek word δράκων translated to the English "dragon" was associated with a serpent or poisonous spirit. And the Hebrew תנין also was refering to a serpent or sea-monster. In Chinese culture the dragon is actually a symbol of health, good luck and strength. So if one of my students gives me a gift of a dragon statue (he is Asain BTW) I am not going to refuse it because some use the Western word dragon in their translations from Hebrew and Greek. One of the main points of this video is that we must be careful when comparing cultures and languages.

To stay in the martial arts, I had to overlook the arrogance that one encounters. Anyone who has attended class for any length of time knows what I'm talking about. The martial arts don't produce arrogance, though--they attract a few people who are already that way. I also had to overcome the idea that the martial arts produces anger. It teaches the use of aggression, but not anger. That took awhile to understand. We don't become prone to anger. We become the opposite.
At first sparring appeared to be extremely violent to me. I'm sure this is a turn-off for the religious minded. By brown belt, the sparring no longer felt violent--it eventually felt like a form of play even when sparring with rough contact.

After much consideration, with Christ in me, I have learned there is no protection when I'm not in Christ.. but in Christ, I am fully protected from any yoga, or Tai chi Spirit that's not in Christ. But every Spirit born of Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Christ, even before he came to Israel! Jesus Christ asked, how did King David know Jesus before he became human ("the LORD said to my Lord")? Jesus visited people and filled them with His Spirit before the new covenant! and He delivers me, (shows me how to stop) when I'm a blind perpetrator of evil, when I'm an intentional perpetrator of evil. From My judgemental thoughts, from my fears of other religious beliefs, from an actual demon with a goat/ lama appearance. He spoke bold prayer words thru me "Lord make me a demon buster" He moved me to cut my hair as a pact to receive His Holy Protection. At the moment the demon appeared and woke me, He filled me with His Spirit and became the Power in me, (no fear, just confident boldness), He was my actions, He gave me the visions to show me how to bind and lock the demon away in a "concrete dam". Done, no more problems, no note disturbances, my sleep competently restored. He flooded me with His powerful Pure Spirit one week after defeating that demon, a major flood of His Presence ( baptism by Holy Spirit?). In Christ, His Spiritual indwelling cannot be overcome by any yoga belief or Tai chi deity, His Holy Spirit is too powerful! END OF STORY Y'ALL!
Whatever you decide, if you do it out of fear, you are in the false god of Religieon, you are not in Jesus Christ Messiah Yeshua. If you choose to not be around a bunch of yogis and Tai chi people who worship their fitness and bodies like a god, you probably make a great choice. But how will we grow the kingdom if we don't encounter those who are thirsty for The True Spirit of Life, and share what we have been given with them? You first must receive His True Spirit of Compassion, Love, Boldness, Soundness, and it's not a spirit of fear or timidity.
He does not give us a spirit of fear and timidity, but (His Spirit of) Power, and Love, and self-discipline.
    2 Tim 1:7
I pray for great leaps and bounds in your journey into the Beautiful Powerful All Protective Fortress of Christ's Body.

If martial arts are forbidden to christians (and i meant both catholics and protestants) then also boxing and pankratos are. Back in the Old Testament, we see not just one, but many episodes of old hebrews going to war. Even King David, by deffeating and killing Goliath with a slingshot , may be compared to a martial arts fighting ( a strong person, insulting God and trying to abuse the weak ones, so one of the weak one uses a long learnt skills to deffeat a bully) So, off course that Martial Arts are not forbidden to christians, cause in he very Bible God ask some men to fight to deffend His honor, and the hebrew people. What is forbidden to christiasn , is to exercise violence without justification. Our Lord Jesuschrist ask to us to put our other chick, but that meant not to seek vengeance after being offended. Not in any case says we must endure being abused, bullied and even killed . Yes, we have to pray and forgive , but that doesn´t meant that we must becomes a punching bag, for any violent and idiotic person. We ahve the rigth to deffend our selves, and martial arts are just a tool to do that (just like boxing and pankratos, by the way). And last, but not less, any serious martial arts also teaching ethics and self restraint to all it´s practitioners. Japaneese , korean and chineese martial arts, demands an ethic use of our skills, for self deffence only. That´s is how i reconcile my catholic beliefs , and my karate trainning. And it works for me. Thanks for reading this comments, and greetings from Chile. Oss 😉.
