  • Welcome to Wonderhussy Adventure #806
    Date of adventure: 6/13/24
Hiking to a beautiful hot spring in a VERY wealthy neighborhood, where the snooty locals are trying to block access to the hiking trail to keep the filthy hippies out.

So cool to see you in my town. Those springs were owned by the Montecito Water District and were closed to the public up until a few years ago. We used to sneak up there in the nineties with a plastic blue tarp and make our own pools. It was bought by the Santa Barbara Land Trust and opened up to the public a few years back. It was a great remote place to go til the pandemic when the news got out and people started coming in droves from LA, Ventura and some of the towns up north. It was an ideal outdoor activity during that time when we were all locked inside. Now, if I go there, I hike in from the next canyon over (Cold Springs Canyon). A bit of a trek, but totally worth it. Again, great to see you in our town and thanks for the hours and hours of one of a kind Infotainment I've enjoyed. Big hugs.

I live nearby in Ventura County, I love the marine layer....we're going to catch up with Mojave in the triple digits soon. The Thomas Fire and subsequent flood really ravaged your area, a friend brought his backhoe after the flood to look for survivors, it was grim. I'm sure the USFS wanted the area to stabilize before allowing the thundering herds of tourists in, we had to tow over 400 tourist vehicles out that blocked our one lane road during the pandemic and haul 100+ pounds of trash out afterwards, with tagging to cover up....this is why magical spots get closed down. People can't behave themselves.

Don't get me started on Rich blocking public access. California beaches! A rich well known actor placed a chain and padlock on the gate for public access. He replaced the parking signs to show no parking here to here. He put plants in front of the gate so people couldn't see it and a camera down the walkway. I cut the locks, moved the plants and flipped the camera off. Within 5 minutes that tiny tot assaulted me BUT he called the Sheriff's. "I paid 12 million for this house. I own the beach!" Sorry, no you don't. Tidelines do I went to annoy him on purpose. He is well known for his shenanigans

All ocean beaches up to the mean high tide level are public per the law. There are many of those beaches that are directly accessible from other public lands. Some beaches have private lands bordering them. They can't stop you from accessing the beach below the high tide mark, but they do not have to provide access to that area through private land.

I used to go there in the '70's, and I never saw anyone else there. There was only the original natural "tub" near the cliff. I built the first tub out of rocks and lined it with black plastic sheet to retain the water better. I hiked all over the mountains in that area and found a few more hot springs with "tubs" that seemed to be very ancient, but they are more remote and harder to find.

I knew you were in the "M" town long before you ever showed that grading permit application as I lived in that county for 35 years. The flora and fauna completely gave it away. The coast is known for its "marine layer" in the mornings...sometimes burns off around 10 or 11am, sometimes it doesn't. Homes in that area run in the 37 million dollar range. Glad you were able to see the area.

Shucks, if I'd known you were coming, you could have camped in our driveway about 10 miles from the trailhead! (We're normal middle-class folks.) But there are even better hot springs in the nearby backcountry with either a long hike or bike ride to get to them... I go out to them twice a year when it's no longer crazy hot back there and rarely see anyone. To get to the closer one, it's either a 7.5 mile, one-way walk; or an 11 mile one-way ride, all uphill on the return. Fun, on an electric mountain bike!

And now it's time for another episode of "How the Hussy Soaks!"🙃 Gotta love it. Anyway, I can kinda understand...homeowners don't buy a supper high priced spread just to have a squad
of other people hanging around nearby. But, when you named some of the residents, I just don't have any respect for their "type". I don't need no stinking celeb's opinions on politics or much
of anything else, for that matter. They need to do movies, write songs and such and keep their voting habits secret.

Not putting American's down but we had a lot of trouble here in NZ with wealthy American folk coming here buying up land and blocking access to the public getting to fishing and hiking spots etc well they soon learnt that they couldn't do that as we have a old law here called the Queen's chain (66feet or 22 yards) that allows access along creek beds and trails that exist over their land, they tried and tried to have convictions imposed on folk or the law changed, at the end of the day access is still allowed and always will be.

Locals really love and respect our nature trails because it is all we have and to see it crowded and littered now, well you can see the issue with the neighbors, evident of the trash you found on the street.... and Thank you for being a good nature citizen and leaving the place better than you found it.
For funnzies, google map this area on satellite view and you can see the amazing estates just beyond the fences and gates you walked and drove past. Quite stunning that I live among this kind of money, that I wish would trickle down to me sometimes, haha.

I won’t give away your new special spot; but I grew up in the neighboring community ( middle class family) and we’d hike up a ravine in the area to an awesome swimming hole with massive boulders you could jump off but clearly development bas over taken public lands which never bodes well for anyone or any creature:-( thank you Wonderhussy for the trip down memory lane:-)

as far as Ive known Babs always lived on PCH in Malibu. In fact the gate has a huge "BS" on it! Youre in Montecito, home of Neverland Ranch, Oprah, Ellen, Rob Lowe, Ariana and a history of lots of wildfires!

I worked for a towing company that would pay us to tow cars leave them in roadways and no parking zones to be towed and ticketed by others. We would get 1000 yes thousand or more per car to do this. The money to hard to resist these people will stop at nothing I heard they gave a guy a battery powered impact gun and 2000 dollars to remove lug nuts from the parked cars and throw them away!

If people were putting up boulders it backfired because it gave some extra publicity to the spring, probably attracting even more people. The very thing they tried to avoid.

Aah yes, The Hussy is back to her old standby and doing a hot spring soak. And I'm guessing you are around the S.B, Ca. area since you mentioned the sulfur odor, the trees and plants that I see and the three-mile hike to get there, not to mention the celebrities. And I'm surprised that no one noticed The Hussy, 'the queen of soak', was in their presence...travel on WH !!
