Let’s start at the beginning. PCOS is a hormonal imbalance in a woman’s body during the reproductive years. The ovaries produce higher-than-normal male hormones and this imbalance may cause a variety of symptoms, most notably, abnormal periods, abnormal hair growth and polycystic ovaries. If you find that you have two out of three of those symptoms, you may just have PCOS, so talk to your doctor. Other symptoms include excessive acne on the face or body, thinning hair, mood changes, fatigue, sleep issues and headaches.
What are the complications of PCOS?
PCOS is the leading cause of infertility in women. When a woman has PCOS, she does not ovulate regularly and may develop polycystic ovaries. Dr. Lewis explains it like this: “what happens is that with polycystic ovaries, the actual cysts themselves, or these little follicles, are supposed to mature and eventually release an egg, but these do not mature. They stay immature and they get arrested in this specific phase.”
How Do You Treat or Prevent PCOS?
You cannot prevent PCOS, you can only treat the symptoms. However, doctors may prescribe medications that help ovulation. Often times, the birth control pill is prescribed to help women regulate their menstrual cycle.
If you’re feeling any symptoms, start talking to your doctor now!
You should talk about the detrimental effect of this on the woman's husband, and how no discusses this. His needs go out the window and his support goes unappreciated and he gets ultimately cheated on and neglected.
