The reason women do not leave the home before divorce is usually because they have no access to funds. Add to this the natural reluctance to leave ones children behind. Friends who work in domestic violence cases tell me this happens every day. If you have no job, it's impossible to put aside "escape" cash without alerting a potentially murderous spouse.

The weirdest stories to me are the ones where the husband is cheating on the wife, but won't stand for a divorce. I mean, you don't want to be with your wife, you treat her like crap and you're obviously unhappy, but you're not willing to let her go either. That's some really fckd up thinking!
I agree, I always think the same thing. In this case I believe he didn't want to pay child support for 4 kids. It's 'cheaper to keep her' as they say.

It's bc their motive has nothing to do with love or companionship and everything to do with maintaining total control. Losing control of anything or anyone delivers an unforgivable blow to their fragile ego which sends them into a rage filled attempt to regain control at all costs. Thanks Dr. Grande. Unsolved murders really bother me because my niece disappeared years ago and no one was ever arrested, her remains were never found. My family knows it was her ex-boyfriend, and my aunt told the police that she found her car with her purse in it at a local CVS store. But the lazy and incompetent small town police have never solved it.

Or I just saw an interview with Psychic detective Pam Coronado (who even worked for the FBI at times) - she stated she specializes in missing persons cases, also cold cases - whether or not one believes in it, maybe someone like her (or as qualified!) could help

A spouse like Michelle might stay because she’s gotten used to the abuse & starts to believe she deserves it. She couldn’t afford to move out with her 4 kids on just waitress tips. The affairs were maybe to build up her self-esteem after dealing w abuse & rejection. She was probably advised not to abandon the kids before the divorce finalized at which point she thought she would be free.
Some women stay with their abusive husbands because they're too emotionally weak to leave. Up until last year, Colorado Congresswoman Lauren Bimbert stayed with her husband Jayson despite him physically & sexually abusing their kids because she couldn't afford to support herself on just her Congressional salary.
Some Mothers are very hesitant to disrupt their children's lives.
She could have been taking drugs, for example antidepressants and benzos. She would also have feared rejection from her family and friends if she had left her husband. It's even worse with people who have 'good moral values'. All the 'therapists', 'counsellors', 'psychiatrists' and of course the priests in the area where I grew up focused on 'keeping the family together', 'forgive and forget' etc. We had psychiatrists, psychologists and the like coming to my Roman Catholic school to give us lectures against divorce.
I've recently come across a dismal femicide case in France, Jonathan Daval and Alexia Daval. Looking at Facebook and such they were an extremely happy couple, they had met when they were 20 and 16 respectively, quickly became a couple, and eventually married when they were 31 and 27. They both had good, permanent white collar jobs, no money problems whatsoever, they went on nice holidays (they had honeymooned in the Pacific), drove nice cars, they also owned a big house (which had belonged to Alexia's grandmother) with a swimming pool, which they were renovating, the only issue they had was that Alexia struggled to conceive. Jonathan beat her up and strangled her to death one night, then took the body to a wood nearby and tried to set it on fire. The body was found 2 days later. The 'gendarmerie' waited for 3 months to charge him for murder, they wanted to have enough evidence. They did a sterling job of making the body talk, the GPS system of Jonathan's car also gave damning evidence, and the text messages Alexia had been sending her husband and other people were also incriminating. What struck me is that Alexia's family initially stodd by Jonathan, he had even moved in with his parents in law after the body was found. He managed to fool everybody, then, when he was charged with murder, he accused his brother in law of having murdered his wife in front of the whole family and of them having attempted to cover it up... In fact, he had probably premeditated the murder. He had also been drugging up his wife with Tramadol and Tetrazepam (Valium, which is banned in France) without her knowledge, maybe he was hoping she would dir from respiratory depression during her sleep? Appearances can be really misleading.
Calvin is guilty and this is why I think so: The morning tasks of getting the kids off to school was always Michelle's thing. Anytime in their relationship when Calvin had to deal with the chores and tasks associated with kids' morning routine, he whined and griped. Even when he just had to help out with it, not just on the handful of occasions he had to do it all himself. The morning Michelle "disappeared" the housekeeper testified that Cal Harris covered the entire list of things required of him to handle the 4 kids that morning. He did so without complaining in any way whatsoever. Now, this is suspicious alone given his well established disdain for this role. The clencher is that beyond his dramatically out of character calm, bitching-free handling of the kids that morning, Cal never once expressed the slightest bit of resentment or anger over Michelle not being there. Had he no knowledge that her absence was due to her being dead, Cal could only have concluded that Michelle was not there on time because of over sleeping or some other reason rooted in irresponsibility, or possibly he may have suspected she intentionally failed to show up just to force him to handle the kids that day. Like a spiteful thing. They were in a bitter, bitter divorce process. If Michelle was negligent or if she was messing with him, either reason, Cal would've been throwing a fit, blowing up her phone and talking major shit about her. But he just put his head down, held his tongue (generally an impossible feat for Cal) and did all the loathsome work without a single complaint.
Brilliant. Very well put. He did it. No doubt in my mind. He also had an incredibly hot temper and resentment issues. He'll do anything until the end of time to punish the people that charged him (and others that believe he's guilty) not out of being wronged but simply "messed" with. His lawsuits were without merit. He knew that he could screw with everyone because he could never be charged again. He's a really weird guy. I believe he's a narcissistic, hotheaded killer.

When I first watched videos on your channels, I was 16 years old and now I am 21. Due to certain events in my life, I have always acted much older and more seriously than my generation. When I was 15, I was told to act like I was 25, and I was also always extremely introverted. In those years I was afraid that I had some kind of psychopathic personality disorder, but watching your videos helped me to become wiser and learn many things about myself and others and not to worry that I had some kind of disorder. I seem to recall another story like this but it took place in NYC on 9/11 and I think the woman was a nurse or emergency medical technical. The story went something like, the husband said she felt compelled to go to the site and help out, she did and was never seen again. However, there was suspicion the husband instead killed her in the chaos.

I have a theory that a few of the 9/11 victims, aren't really dead. They were unhappy with their lives, and used the event, to disappear. Difficult to pull off, for sure, but not impossible.
They had 4 children together. Was either of them even thinking about bringing up their children? They seem to have been far too busy hating each other to focus on what all this would do to them. So sad that the children must have been brought up for part of the time by the murderer of their mother, and mainly under the shadow of all those trials. It's difficult to over-estimate the damage all this must have caused to them

If the mother leaves the home, it is legally consider abandonment. Never leave the home. I had to threaten to turn him into IRS as he hadn’t paid in 4 previous years, in known to me. DONT LEAVE, friends.😢Also, as soon as you think divorce is eminent, get a bank box and squirrel away cash.
This is what I was thinking too. She didn't have many options and he wasn't going to leave. He probably also threatened to take the kids and likely would have just for control. 😢
Bad advice to threaten spouses. Better to give them positive incentives for desirable behavior. Also, a spouse (you) is equally responsible for the taxes.
I have an opinion-really more of a theory. She knew he would become violent if she left him, maybe because she’d already tried to leave, or maybe because he was threatening her. She might have been looking for a man to help her escape, but that’s got to be hard sale with all those kids. I’m guessing the husband did it, because he didn’t seem concerned when the babysitter told him she found the wife’s car with no driver.
We need better resources for people trying to leave dangerous relationships. The police won’t help until after a crime has been committed. One idea is to ask your friends and family members to help you move out and surprise the unregulated partner with your plans.
I did know a family, in our former church, who was approached to hide a woman and her kids from a violent partner. They did it. I don't know for how long but I guess he couldn't find her or the kids for whatever time period and he gave up. I think the woman was somewhat fortunate in the fact that she wasn't married to him and the kids weren't his.
This story along with many others you share, is a constant reminder that people get away with murder. And that sucks. Justice never served, simply fleeting before the system breaks down.
Karma catches up to us all though. It might not be instant. Sometimes it takes years. Some think lifetimes. Anyway, what goes around, comes around.
Not only that but people get away with murder whilst others are found guilty and are innocent.
Other people go to prison for crimes that they didn't commit

It seems like detectives and prosecutors some times come up with a theory, then gather evidence to defend their theory. It should be the other way around, with ALL evidence gathered prior to making a theory. It ultimately weakens their case because of the tunnel vision. Thanks for the analysis as always!

It's incredibly easy to fool a police investigator, and incredibly hard to change his mind.
To go alongside that it always seems the legal system is much keener to find somebody guilty rather than spend any time eliminating them from the enquiry.

@@alukuhito A defendant's innocence is not a theory; it is the presumption. Evidence is required for a conviction. Lack of evidence leads only to acquittal.
Sometimes you need a theory to discover evidence. It’s not that black and white. Prosecutors DO collect all the evidence before trial, but new things can come to light during trials. Sometimes prosecutors go for a trial with weak evidence because they don’t believe more will be obtained and at least want a shot at prosecuting the defendant. It’s better to take a shot in the dark sometimes than leave a murderer on the streets when there’s no expectation of further evidence coming to light.

I think the reason she did not leave her home is her children. In the divorce trial that could have certainly led to accusations against her of child abandonment. And, therefore, reduced her chances of getting at least 50% custodial care of them. Nevermind that, under similar circumstances, that I would NEVER leave my children in the sole care of a man who had threatened me. If I did not have the means to take my children with me when I left, I would not leave.
Well he got sole custody in the end.
Both of these folks were apparently a bit off early in their marriage. Thrill seeking, outcomes be damned. I just hope the 4 kids had sympathetic& reliable family members to take care of them.

I never pass judgement on any of these true crime podcast or YT stories because we never have all the information or evidence as was presented at trial. There are facts here that seem to lead to his guilt and other facts that cast doubt. What I have learned over the years is that taking a bench trial is probably the way to go if you're ever in this situation. Juries can be manipulated and their emotions and "gut feelings" can be preyed upon maybe to your benefit but more likely to your detriment. Judges (for the most part) are by the book professionals who are guided by the rule of law and if the prosecution can't make the case then that's that.
Yup, the adage I've always heard.....ask for a jury trial if you are guilty, ask for a bench trial if you are innocent.
Either way, these two adults were shitty parents who were selfish and self-serving. How can people have affairs when you have four damn kids

I grew up in the Binghamton area and this was a huge story locally while the case was ongoing, but I don't think I've ever seen it covered by a non-local source. It's scary that people can murder their spouse and live free. The best predictor of future behavior, is relevant past behavior. An abuser to one, is typically going to be an abuser to the next. My theory is Cal is responsible for her death and disposal, but he didn't do it himself. Follow the money, which wouldn't have been a withdrawal/transfer from his account obviously. The business, his parents, a sibling, or even periodic payments of cash. I don't know what the police were able to obtain search warrants for in relation to other people. For example, the steel worker dude with the black pick up truck. I must admit, I'm pleased to hear he has encountered many problems with police in the years since. Thanks Dr Grande. To add on to your probable theory, it could be the steel worker didn't do it BUT in a state of panic burned anything he had of hers in fear of being suspected. That is of course, if he knew she was dead and wasn't the killer.
@@eadweard. I don’t believe they’re saying that there is a known payment as of yet, but suggesting that an investigator should go looking through financial records to see if there’s potentially any hints someone else was paid off to help with the murder/body disposal.

If he was innocent and cared anything about his wife and children, then he would have hired his own investigator to find the killer and to clear his name. He's likely the real killer and could have paid the "witness" to frame the boyfriend. He'll slip up one day.
I thought that was odd that the 'witness' shows up many years after the fact with his little bit of knowledge. Why would you wait that long to go to the police?
@@kimberlyward5963 He was a farmer, do you think farmers spend their time watching/reading murder stories? He probably found out about it years later, and decided to do the right thing. Funny thing about farmers, they are the moral fabric of this country.
He did hire his own private investigator, the guy even wrote a book afterwards about all the evidence the court prevented the defense from using.

The COST for the four trials must have been outrageous. AND the court time wasted preventing other cases from being heard is insane. What a crazy system.
Happy New Year Dr. Grande!! I would love if you considered covering the case between Corporal Bruce McKay and Liko Kenney. There is dashcam footage from 2003 of Corporal McKay conducting a traffic stop on Liko Kenney, who was parked in an snowy isolated area. Kenney refused to present his ID to McKay or follow any orders and argued about his rights. It became a drawn out ordeal for over 20 minutes and ended with 3 officers having to take Kenney down. Kenney would encounter McKay again 4 years later in 2007 when he was stopped for speeding, where a chase ensued. Kenney murdered McKay by shooting him 4 times and driving over him after being stopped and pepper sprayed.

The children seemed like an afterthought to both the husband and wife. Cal seemed plenty dangerous to the kids all by himself, but other guys the wife dealt with were certainly not giving off vibes of safety, either. I think the steel worker killed someone, but I think Cal killed his wife. It doesn't seem like either murder will be solved, and it doesn't seem like the kids have anyone to advocate for them. I hope I'm wrong, and that they grew up in a stable environment after all.
And with urine poor case to boot. Hell they did not even have a body, she might still be alive today in the back seat of some young man's car.

This whole case is just another example of the courts and law enforcement being so determined on proving a husband is a killer, that they allow the more suspicious person to leave the state unnoticed.

Dr. Grande, would you please review the case where the wife fell down the back staircase of their mansion and cracked her head open - evidently she did not die right away - while the husband sat by the pool. And this was the 2nd woman he was involved with that died from a fall down the stairs. A very unsettling situation as far as I'm concerned. The whole thing never sat right with me. She was a high earning executive and he was an author - if that helps you find the story. Thank you.
That sounds like the case of Michael Peterson ("The Staircase" on Netflix - though too pro-Peterson) - I think Dr. Grande even already did a video about him - The Behavior Panel did a really interesting video on him (here on CZcams), they also didn't seem to believe him!
@@ember1794 Honestly, maybe it was because he was such an extremely strange man with that gigantic superiority complex - which frankly he and his children had - I couldn't see past all that nonsense plus the gay lover - who I found did NOT take any of this seriously - plus the whole book of his being lies to the horrifying description of the fall and her terrible death which was far from instantaneous to the pictures of the blood up and down the walls and them trying to explain that which was totally over the top to the grand finale'......an owl attacked her head. Oh, and I forgot about the lover in Germany that he threw down the steps and murdered. I guess this was foreshadowing.
I'm telling you, there was so much going on that I honestly get dizzy just thinking about all of this. Oh, and I forgot to mention that either he or they ran through ALL THE MONEY THEY HAD and they were on the verge of bankruptcy and she was about to be laid off. Jeesh, she probably killed herself!!!

And those poor kids. I never could quite wrap my mind on how the 2 adopted ones (daughters of the first stairfall woman) ended up with him. Like... Didn't they have a dad already? I thought the 2 couples were friends while stationed/working in Germany. Like didn't they live in base housing? Ah, I could be remembering incorrectly. My brain was so overloaded by all the other stuff going on I honestly don't think I was capable of taking that in. I do know that there were a ton of kids in that family. Now I know where 2 of them came from. It's a crazy story. An absolute bottomless pit of places to go with it.

My theory is she was laying the ground work for getting rid of Cal, but got cold feet when her boyfriend showed up to do the deed. They then got into a argument, and he did her in instead of Cal. I highly doubt Cal killed his wife with four children at home.

Duh Calvin killed his wife. It doesn't make sense that a lover would kill her in the garage and then take her vehicle up the driveway. Cal did it for sure.

Why would Cal leave her car at the end of the driveway if he killed her? The farm hand said he saw her arguing with some guy in a black pickup on Sept 12th, but the police assert she was killed on Sept 11th?
I suppose being a car dealership guy, Cal could have arranged for an employee of the dealership to tow her car somewhere and that employee arrived with a female intending to tow the car with the pickup, or the female was to drive the car, but the arrival of the farm worker somehow scared them off?
Or Cal just didn't kill her.
It sounds as if there could be just as much evidence to investigate the steelworker as there was to investigate Calvin. Imagine if Cal and the steelworker met some time before the killing and, after some awkward tension, actually formed a friendship, or at least an alliance to get rid of Michele ? That might explain why Michele's blood was in Cal's house but the black pickup was also seen by the farmhand.

This is a case that can’t be definitively determined. Her choices after the affair were too messy to unravel after the fact.

Leaving the kids behind would mean a horrible custody battle and the fact she left would have been used against her in court.. along with no/low income and small living accommodations. The court would have likely given custody to her horrid husband.
So why couldn't she take the children with her, she would have got child support from a rich man. Most times that is a lot of money, we see all the time how women take sports stars to the cleaners with just one child. Face it, she was a slut, and if she is still alive probably still one. His money afforded her a promiscuous lifestyle. From what the farmer claimed, and the evidence at her boyfriend, if anybody killed her it was him.

Hopeless misunderstanding. They didn't have retrials cos the state lost. The state won the first two. This was all explained in the video.

It's an often wondered thing - how many murders took place in Europe during the WWII bombing campaigns against the many cities attacked. A bombing raid would provide a perfect cover, many violent deaths, the authorities too busy to investigate.

She had 4 small children between 2 and 7 so it wouldn't be easy for her to move out because he would probably cut her off financially. So that's probably why she stayed.
As for him, he owned a car dealership and then basically hired women that he wanted to have sex with. That's just gross. He's just lazy and entitled.
This is just a theory, my opinion.
NO judge would cut her off financially with four children. If she was really filling for divorce any good attorney would have told her she held the cards. She liked it the way it was, she would had to give up her sex life to keep the children and leave him. She stayed for the sex, but not with him, or maybe with him, and others. People with less money than Cal get slapped with a grand a month per kid, she would probably have got more. There was really no reason to stay except for her lifestyle choices.

Dr G, this case has bothered me for a long time, particularly because of the medium velocity blood spatter (60 drops) found near the door to the garage….on the rug there and on the walls. That’s quite a bit of blood to fly sideways onto a wall. Plus more blood on the garage floor. All of the blood evidence was Michelle’s. This convinces me that she was killed with a blow to the head as she was running out the door. And yet, as you explained so well here, this one piece of blood circumstantial evidence would not allow me to vote to convict, were I are juror.
Women out there, be extremely careful/cautious when you are just about to leave a man who has displayed any violent traits. This is often the point where the woman is killed by the husband.
