When drinking coffee at home, you have a major decision to make... Do you grind your own coffee, or buy it pre-ground? If you choose to grind coffee yourself (for freshness and grind size flexibility), which kind of coffee grinder is right for you? Maybe a blade grinder serves its purpose and matches your budget, or maybe you're willing to invest a bit more and get a portable burr grinder. The choice is yours!

You have to pulse and shake the blade grinder about three times to make sure the bens are fairly uniform. The Krups does this and makes great coffee. I only paid $18.00

I’ve been raised in my parents house and then my own , using both burr and blade grinders as far as I can remember. My parents NEVER drank anything but whole bean they ground themselves. I myself have a hand burr grinder in the RV and one in the house. We also have electric burr and blade grinders, as we’ve been exclusive Jamaican Blue mountain and 100% Kona consumption fanatics in a French press for almost 4 decades now. That said…. I can’t tell the difference in taste between burr or blade ground premium brewed coffee.

Thanks for the context! I would say it also depends on the quality of the burr grinder to note the difference.
That being said, keep in mind that Jamaican Blue Mountain and Kona are not inherently specialty grade coffee, and brewing in the French press, maybe you won’t taste a huge difference. Though, there will definitely be different rates of extractions depending on particle size distributions.

I’ve always used hand grinder and the one I use is Porlex . I have been using it for 8 years and it’s still working perfectly. Never had any parts changed.

Be interesting to see a blind taste test with the aeropress with the same size grind and see if you can tell the difference

Started off with a blade grinder, then went into a Hario Skerton knock off. Exclusively used a moka pot then, as the unsteady axle of the grinder made french press undrinkable as the grinds were inconsistent. It would take me up to 8 minutes to grind sometimes, and after I was done the ceramic burr would be very hot to handle. Eventually upgraded to a timemore C2. It’s been apples and oranges, incomparable. Sub one minute grinds, even for moka pot. Consistency across the grounds, to the point where I now exclusively make V60 brews every morning. Only small issue is there’s a gap between the axle and the detachable handle so the handle does have some horizontal wiggle, but it has no effect on the grind as the axle is heavily reinforced and supported. I wish the wiggle wasn’t a thing, and it seems like if they’d just either made the hole that the axle goes into, on the handle, longer or just slightly shortened the axle itself, it would no longer occur. Considered returning the timemore and swapping it out for a 1zpresso Q2, but I’m a bit hesitant as the Q2 seems to have a smaller grounds canister.
