  • Ruroc have an awesome lens system for their ski goggles and there are a ton of different options to choose from, but which ones should you buy?
    I’ve been using Ruroc helmets for the past 3 ski seasons and have a few... ok a lot of their lenses so I thought I’d share some of my experiences with them.
    It’s a long video so here’s some shortcuts to each section:
    Lens basics - 02:33
    S0 Lens - 3:10
    S1 Lens - 3:58
    S2 Lens - 4:34
    S3 Lenses - 5:08
    S4 Lenses - 6:16
    Lens colour differences 7:16
    NASTEK Lenses - 9:01
    Polarised lenses - 10:15
    Transition lenses - 11:20
    One thing you need to know if you have an older helmet - 12:58

    Just so Yall know I just got in contact with Ruroc, The Blackout is S4 rated and the Transition lens goes from S1-S4 they are the only two lens that are Cat 4 (S4 rated). The clear S0. Rose,Yellow are S1. Orange is S2 and all the rest are S3. I have the transition lens and it gets extremely dark, it is great in very sunny conditions, Also the polarized ones are the best in my opinion for the bright sun.

    The issue with Ruroc is they force you to buy new goggles. I have an older helmet, before they had really been seen around my area of the US. I wanted more lenses, but they stopped making them for my goggles. In 2016, I had to purchase a new magloc goggles system (mind you no discount was given even though it was forced). Now I want to add another lense to my collection, only to find that it will not stay on my magloc goggles and they said I would have to buy a new goggle system AGAIN. That is not good customer service, not looking out for their long time customers that have spread the desire for other locals to purchase Ruroc. I'm quite frankly, extremely pissed right now.

    Thank you man !

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 9 měsíci

      Honestly if you’re only going for a week the black lens will work fine. The newer black lens they use that you get with the helmet is slightly different from what I covered in the video, it’s a bit lighter so works in most conditions.
      Depending on how sensitive your eyes are and where you’re skiing, only in really bad conditions you’ll find it too dark and it doesn’t give great contrast in flat light in comparison to lenses designed for that… but it’s still skiable.
      If the weather gets that bad most people don’t ski… I’m just out there in all conditions ☺️

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 6 měsíci

      Vision side to side is good… however up and down is quite restrictive in comparison to all my other goggles… it’s good when you’re first learning because it forces you to not look at your skis but otherwise modern goggles are much better

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 5 lety +2

      Yes I agree the visibility horizontally is really good... but in comparison to my previous goggles my field of view vertically is restricted below my nose. Ironically this actually made me a better skier as I used to always look down at my feet and these stopped me from doing that 😂

    I have a 2015 RG1-X helmet and want to purchase the new transition lenses, but in the video theres the slight difference in goggles so one set won't clip the lenses in. Do you know if my 2015 setup is compatible if I were to buy a new transition lense? Thanks

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 2 lety

      The lenses do fit, there’s just a slight difference in the locking clips so the magnets hold in place but the clips don’t stay shut. The goggles are the same size so the new ones will fit the older helmets (which isn’t the cheapest solution) but for some reason the 15/16 goggle clips were slightly different.
      It’s worth speaking to Ruroc and they might be able to either give you different clips for those goggles or sort out something for you if they don’t fit

  • @AndreiCosm
    @AndreiCosm Před 4 lety +1

    Thanks for the video. But I have a question. Do you have something under the helmet when you are skiing? I'm waiting for my first Ruroc helmet, to be delivered. But with my old helmet from Uvex I have always the problem that my neck is getting really cold during the day's when I ski.

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 4 lety +1

      Andrei C. I never wear a balaclava or mask under the helmet if that’s what you mean? When it’s windy it gets to -20 I tend to have my ski jacket zipped all the way up so stop my neck getting cold, but at the most I’ll have is a merino buff around my neck if needed. The Ruroc helmet comes down at the back a lot more than most other helmets so it’s just the front under the chin that you might need to cover

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před rokem

      they are two different sizes but you can put the smaller ones into the larger ones but the fit is slightly off so the clips won’t necessarily go on. But the magnets and nose part of the frame will hold them on. I haven’t tried it the other way around, but if I do I’ll reply in the future

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Ruroc have changed the lens line up over the past few years since I made this video, I believe the black lens that comes with the helmets now are an S2… however the S-values aren’t exact and have a range so it’s darker than say the orange but not as dark as one of the iridescent lenses… for most situations the black S2 lens will be all you need it’s only when you get to extreme sunny days in spring or if it’s an extremely dark stormy day that you’ll need something else

    • @GarethDix

      I’m not sure as I didn’t have an original RG-1 to test this. But I’m pretty sure Ruroc used to have on their website that the RG-1DX lenses don’t fit the RG-1 goggles so I’m assuming this wouldn’t work the other way around either. The magnets in the lenses are critical to the lens staying in on the latest goggles so without them even if they fit, they would likely rattle around and pop out every so often

      Now that you mention it, I think it was 2017. The lens isn’t chrome in nature at all. Its black. However, given the fact that I’ve only seen my lens I can’t say it isn’t what Ruroc would call chrome. In any case would that be considered S3 in tint?

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před rokem

      Oh weird, I’ve only seen it with a chrome lens… did you get it direct from Ruroc? I think from 2017 they stopped adding the S values or names on the lenses which wasn’t helpful as there are many different versions of the black lenses. There’s the standard black now (S2) there’s an older black lens that was (S3) the Onyx, blackout and black polarised lenses which were all S4.
      But now you got me interested… let me see what I can find out

    • @TheNotoriousAdz
      @TheNotoriousAdz Před rokem +1

      Yes I bought it directly from Ruroc and once again you have jogged my memory. I do recall the name “Onyx”. I am fairly certain that is the lens I have. Reason for wanting to know was to help decide if I should go with the Yellow or Orange lens. The lens I have is good through most conditions and night riding is not an issue as there are lights and shadows. But I do feel like on snowy overcast days there is hardly any shadows and I can’t see any detail in the terrain. I think I am going to try the yellow lens as there should be a noticeable change from “S3 to S1” You really do have pretty good knowledge off the top of your head. Thanks for quick response as well.

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před rokem

      The orange lens for me didn’t really help with contrast as much as the yellow lens does… and especially in a whiteout the orange lens was a little too dark it’s a shame they don’t do the Nastek version of the yellow lens anymore as that was even better.
      But let me know how you get on!

    Thanks for the video! Super helpful! Wanted to ask a few questions:
    1) I don't see the S value you mentioned in their different lens options somehow, did they remove that number?
    2) I thought all "Iridescent lens" are S3 and all "polarize lens" are S4 but in your video you mentioned the Titan Gold Iridescent lens is an S4 so I'm a bit confused.
    3) May I ask which ones are the lens you mentioned in the video frame at 7:45 minutes? I like both colors. Is it the Green and Red Iridescent lens? Thanks a lot!!

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi Lawrence, Ruroc made a number of changes to their line up this year including removing the S Values from their website for some reason although I’m not sure why. The easiest way to think about it is the Clear lenses are S0, Lowlight Rose/Yellow S1, Orange/red/Green S2, light iridescent lenses S3 and the solid mirror style lenses Chrome, Blackout, Titan S4. Until this year they didn’t refer to the darker lenses as “iridescent” only the colourful lenses like blue/red/green. From the photo it looks like they may have changed the Titan lens (although it could just be the photo) but the solid gold is definitely an S4, I’ve used this most of this season as we had an unusual amount of bluebird days. The Lenses at 7:45 were previously called “Viper” and “Sunfire” as (just to make it confusing) last year Ruroc had Red and Green lenses that were S2 value. The Viper lens is the green, but the sunfire lens looks like it’s been replaced with the polarised fire. To be honest I really like the polarised lenses and worth the extra if you get bluebird days where you are. Hope this helps, but always happy to answer more questions :)

      Yes any of the helmets with the visor also have the gopro mount underneath. But the mount doesn’t have a fixed nut so if you use it, you end up attaching the gopro and it’s there for the whole day so you don’t lose the nut on the other end of the screw. The other mount means I can take the gopro on and off really quickly for changing batteries or SD cards or keeping it warm etc

    DO the goggle lenses have a ANSI/ ISEA Z87.1 SAFETY RATING? Is the helmet comfortable after extended wear and do you have any problems with lense fog. Could you wear different company goggles with this helmet? What are some other goggles that would fit this helmet?

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 4 lety

      I’m not sure about the safety rating of the goggles might be something to ask Ruroc... but I’ll also try and find out.
      I wear mine all day when we hit the slopes with no issues... in fact it’s a little weird when I take it off because I get used to being cocooned in the helmet.
      The only thing I’ll say is that I run hot most of the time and it can get a little sweaty in warm weather (I tend not to use it for my bike or skateboard in the summer)
      The goggles don’t fog up as the air flows through the helmet, the only exception to this is if you stop moving for an extended period after an intense run as there’s no airflow.
      I haven’t tried it with different goggles but I seem to remember someone on CZcams wearing the helmet with Oakley A-Frames but no idea how that fitted correctly.
      I do think that’s the one big disadvantage to the helmet though, I would love to be able to use Oakley Prizm lenses for them as nothing I’ve seen compares to those

      I didn’t manage to get the rose lens as they were sold out when I wanted to buy one. A number of people mentioned that Ruroc have removed the S value and light transmission info from the site so I wish I’d saved it.
      The yellow lens is probably between 55-60% the orange maybe 40% and I would assume the rose lens is around 50%. The guys at Ruroc are pretty good at customer service so would be worth asking on the rose lens specifically. If I manage to get one I can ask as well

      When you’re wearing them with a helmet you can still see your eyes through them but only just, so you’d need to be pretty close to see what you’re looking at. I don’t think Ruroc still make the black S2 (formerly called the onyx), the iridescent and polarised blackout lenses are S3-S4. I expected quality and service, but It is definitely not worth for the price.
    2 of 4 lenses sucked moisture in half session (inside the lenses). Always I put it on in colder weather the water collides (and sometimes freezes) So lenses are totally unusable. (120Eur)
    Mask gasket disappeared second ride. (10Eur)
    Both strap adjusters broke first use of second year - obviously - used plastic material get hard and fragile. When it happened to first piece, I tried to adjust the second more carefully, but... no chance. No spare parts. (130Eur)
    The sound system quality was terrible, I was luckily so smart that returned it. (110Eur)
    It means 260Eur costs per year, maybe 170Eur if I catch discount.
    Solid brands sell spare parts much cheaper than Ruroc sales (not counting cheap china brands)
    And ... now I see new lenses are incompatible with my goggles - amazing, so I need new goggles - be ecologic, save the planed !!
    For me Ruroc quality is huge disappointment.
    edit: I forgotten. Helmet bag stitching teared in about two weeks. And the mask get broken in backpack (this I agree was my fault).

    • @GarethDix
      @GarethDix  Před 4 lety

      The moisture is a little weird as this is the main reason I use Ruroc helmets as I typically run hot and every other pair of goggles I’ve used steams up within minutes. I will say if I stop moving in hot weather after an intense run the lack of airflow does cause moisture build up.
      I’ve lost a gasket but weirdly never again (knock on wood). To be honest I don’t know why they don’t fix these in permanently.
      The strap adjuster problem is weird, We have 5 of these helmets and haven’t had this issue, have Ruroc not responded?
      The sound system is pretty bad that I agree with and I have v1 and 2 but I keep losing AirPods on the mountain so I’m ok with it.
      The new lenses aren’t completely incompatible they still fit the clips don’t attach fully but I’m using all my lenses with both as the magnets are good enough to hold it in place.
      But really drop Ruroc a message they’ve been great when I’ve needed them unless something has changed in the past year
