    Rented one and shot it alongside the RF 85 f/2 and RF f/1.2 Its a really good lens, but no, its not better than the L. Its not even as good as the L, not even close. But then again, the L is also $2700. So this is a nice compromise but honestly, id take the Canon f/2 over this. Cheaper, lighter, IS, macro and its made by Canon.

      thanks for the input! Canon glass will always be very sharp as they are manufactured directly for canon, unfortunately they don’t give resources to third party developers like Sony does, so third party lenses will always be playing catch up.

    • @Seitenwerk
      @Seitenwerk Před 3 lety

      Also not to forget that, depending on the lense, certain camera features may not be available. For updating you may also need additional adapters that further increase the price. From what I know RF third party lenses are also just EF lenses with an RF mount (so they actually use EF registration numbers and the camera think you just mounted an EF lense). There are many downsides for using a third party lense which buyers should be aware of. For many users that may not matter when considering the price so its absolutely fine. Its just important that people know about that before buying and thinking its just the same but cheaper.

    Great review! I owned this lens on Sony then sold it in favor of the Sigma 85mm DN Art. When I swapped over to the R6 I was tempted by the Samyang again but went for the RF 85mm f/2 as I mainly shoot still life with the lens so the close focusing distance makes a huge difference! If the 85mm DN Art comes out in RF mount, I think you’d fall in love with it even more than the Samyang!

    1.4 is the sweet spot on full frame RN. 1.4 prime and 2.8 zoom is as good as it gets for image quality, weight and price compromise. For APSC it's 1.2 and f2 I'd say, but we're not getting f2 zooms for some reason.

    I'm having this lens and it feels great, especially with the small size and weight. However, after using Sigma 85 Art, I have to say nothing beat that lens in term of quality so this Samyang still doesn't get me the feeling of super sharpness. One thing though since it's smaller, I can now afford to bring it with me on traveling, which I would never do with 85 Sigma art before. What's the point of having a good lens but you hardly can bring it to anywhere else, right?

(sorry if I posted two comments my computer glitched) After looking at the sample footage the pictures and video in this review look really soft and lack contrast. Maybe it's export settings maybe it's CZcams compression who knows but the samples leave a lot to be desired. Maybe a used Canon EF 85 or Sigma EF 85 with a EF to RF adapter might be a better choice. Hope that helps!

    How can you live with minimum focal distance of 1m in product photography? And how often you take pictures with aperture 1.4? Stopping down to 4-5.6 any 85mm lens gives you spectacular results. And you can buy many of samyang's lenses very cheaply with stacked focus rings apertures not working etc. Just get Canon EF 85mm 1.8 for 200$ used and you are done! And No! Samyang is not even close to Canon L lenses...

At 2:40 you said two different things: "This lens is super sharp", but then you said "it's sharp enough wide open". So when shooting at 1.4 is it super sharp or sharp enough? I read many reviews about the Viltrox for Fuji mount and people said that this lens was very sharp wide open, but I have been really disappointed because I don't find the Viltrox very sharp wide open, in fact is soft. While I have not experimented with the lens, I am selling my Canon 85 and purchasing this based on the research I have done. While the Canon 85 has image stabilisation, it struggles to hit the mark in low light situations. The focus breath is a disaster. My old EF Canon lenses with an adaptor respond better with the eye detection and auto focusing modes. I was so frustrated with the Canon 85 on one shoot I nearing took it off my camera body and tossed it over a fence!! Thankfully I kept my cool and I will sell it instead.

    If you aren’t going with R lenses, why go with a Canon R body?
    If someone has a Canon DSLR (ie 5d3/ 5d4) with a big set of awesome L lenses, why switch to the R/R6/R5 - especially if they have a very limited R-lens catalog at the moment, and foreseeable future (compared to the vast L library).
    The only thing I can think of is if you do video (4k video at high frame rate).
    Can I get your thoughts on this?
    I’m debating adding a full frame camera to do youtube videos. Full frame 4k sounds enticing, but that’s the only benefit I see.
    I’d appreciate your help with this.
    I don’t necessarily have to stick with a Canon, but would prefer to do so because of future lenses.
    I DON’T like to use lens adapters (ie use L lenses on the R bodies).

    • @albertthoughts
      @albertthoughts  Před 3 lety

      i agree with the last part, adapting EF lenses on the R body kind of defeats the purpose of a smaller body, yet it is the best bet right now to have a wider array of lenses available (affordability as well). The R has excellent video capabilities but if you’re looking for a full frame that mainly does video I would go for the R6 since the non-crop will give you better flexibility, check out my video on the R6! I’ve since picked up a couple RF lenses and will be doing some reviews on them soon, stay tuned!

    hello brother i have a question Samyang 85mm 1.4 RF mount with canon m50 + viltrox Speedbooster it's possible are not ?

    • @albertthoughts
      @albertthoughts  Před 3 lety

      I believe if the Viltrox speed booster has a EOS-M to EOS-R mount adapter it should theoretically work, but if they do not, double adapters may cause some problems.

    • @vipersrt30
      @vipersrt30 Před 3 lety

      there is an EF samyang 85mm 1.4 AF available and you should buy that if you're interested in this lens for the m50 since you can adapt EF to eos M but not RF to eos M. but you know it will crop and become more or less around 135mm which is not necessarily a problem but u just need to know that. otherwise if you want the 85mm perspective sigma has a 56mm 1.4 that crops to a very similar focal length to an 85mm for EOS M mount. i recommend the sigma over the samyang since you don't need an adapter there. but if you plan to upgrade to RF in the future, the Samyang on EF mount will be adaptable to the RF bodies.

    • @albertthoughts
      @albertthoughts  Před 3 lety

      @@vipersrt30 oo yes the IO85AF-C (85mm f/1.4 Samyang EF) for Canon EF, this is actually a different lens and lens structure and I believe does not actually have a ED glass in it which may cause fringing and chromatic aberrations unfortunately, but I do hear that the Sigma 56mm f/1.4 is a great lens, good recommendation!

    Canon's color is way better. Samyang has a yellow tint that is noticeable even after post processing. Good cheap lens but that's about all it is. If you're thinking of buying an RF 85mm stick with Canon, you won't have to mess with the color and it focuses flatter than the Samyang. With Canon if you focus on someone's eyes their midriff or the top of their jeans or dress is also in focus, with Samyang it's out of focus. Plus Canon gives you an option of a macro focus, Samyang; doesn't. I shoot only stills so I don't care which one is better at video.

    85 Samyang is super sharp? Ehhhh... it's ok... but it's not 85L RF sharp. 85L RF sharpness is on another level. There's plenty of videos out there that show comparison of this. Samyang isnt even close to being comparable to 85L RF. Lets not get started on the bokeh quality either lol.

    NOT. It is not sharper than the RF versions. None. It is also not sharper than the L version. I own the L version, the RF 85 1.2 and also the RF85 f2. And they are still better options than the Samyang. Have you made a serious comparison or is it just an opinion? And let's not forget the most important thing, cheap is expensive.
