  • Located in the charming coastal village of Castletownshend in West Cork, Thomas Somerville built the house around 1780 in classic Georgian style, its elevations hung with purple Benduff slate and surrounded by park-like gardens with mature trees, including several rare specimens. It is situated at the top of the hill, commanding fabulous views of Castlehaven Bay and the sea beyond.
A stunning 18-acre garden, which owes much of its existence to Edith Somerville of Somerville and Ross, who lived in the 18th century family house most of her life.
Magical paths thread through 18 acres from the formal to woodland with spectacular West Cork Atlantic views. There are huge swathes of bluebells and many specimen trees including the Ginko, a massive Cupressus macrocarpa, Magnolias and Cornuses. Unusual plants including the rare and delicate Woodwardia fern can be seen near the house.
Much of the garden was lovingly tended by Edith Somerville, of Somerville and Ross, who lived in the beautiful slate fronted , 18th century family house almost her entire life. Romantic and enchanting.
