We explore Gran Canaria. We set up camp in Las Palmas, the capital of Gran Canaria, in the very north of the island. With a population of almost 400,000, it is the 9th largest city in Spain. And - compared to the very touristy south of Gran Canaria - it is much less focused on tourism. The modern Santa Catalina district boasts one of the most beautiful city beaches in Europe: Playa de las Canteras. This is where our hotel is located and from here we start our tours of the island.
In addition to Santa Catalina, we will of course explore the two old town districts of Vegueta and Tirana. Of course, a visit to the Mercado de Vegueta and a detour to the impressive cathedral of Las Palmas: Santa Ana.
We also make excursions to Arucas (known for the Iglesia de San Juan Bautista and the Ron Arehucas, rum from the local distillery that is exported worldwide) and Firgas (known for the Paseo de Gran Canaria and for the Agua Minerales de Firgas). We also spend a relaxing afternoon in Agaete and Puerto de las Nieves and drive along the GC-200 coastal road to the Mirador del Balcón.
