- Same idea should work for all the 2nd generation Chevy Equinox 2010 - 2017 with the 60/40 split backseat. ** Oops, correction min is a 2017, not a 2014 but it should be the same
No Permanent Modifications! #SUVRV #Vanlife
You only need two things:
Plastic Garage Shelf - 24'' x 12''
Plywood 2'x8' cut to 6'
- They will cut at most places selling lumber
- I used 1/2'' but I feel like 1/4'' would be fine)
10 Minutes, start your timer:
Cut two plastic poles at 6'' with the tab (recessed end) included
Cut 4 plastic poles at 6'' with no tab (no recessed end)
Set up the plastic shelves in an L shape putting the plywood down on top of the shelves
Optional memory foam on top of the plywood or a camp mat (I wrapped in a #HarborFreight moving blanket)
For storage I ended up cutting the plywood into 2 3' sections

This is a really cost effective and low build time idea. Brilliant. Thanks for sharing.
Hello, I saw your video & I used to do a lot of trailer & truck camping. Let me pass on some things that I learned that might help you in your journey.
1) Get stuff you need at a camping store for backpacking. It's small, compact, & light weight.
2)Get splash guards for your truck. It'll help keep you & your rig clean. They work. I know. Also grease your ball & the cup on your hitch. This will help prevent metal on metal grinding.
3) When parking for the night, park headlong into the wind. That way if a storm comes you won't have to worry about a side wind ripping off your camper shell. Plus, if anything comes bouncing towards the truck, since you have a slimmer profile, it might miss you. If it does hit, the front of the truck is reinforced.
4) Use bug spray on the interior doors & windows/ screens openings to help keep bugs out. Use wasp & hornet spray around & on your tires to help keep critters out. Basically, all points of contact on the ground.
5) An inch is a lot of room. Learn how to stack & get used to sand & dirt. Use floor mats to put your shoes on too
6)Air out your sleeping area every morning or often. In an enclosed space the air gets stale.
7)Use a small fan to circulate the air in your sleeping area. This will help prevent hot & cold spots from forming & help prevent condensation & mold & mildew from forming.
8)Use a solid hooded sweatshirt. Draw the hood tight when you sleep to help encapsulate body heat. It can double as a pillow/ dirty clothes holder/ gear carrier.
I hope this helps. Great vid, thanks for sharing. Drive safe. 🤠
After shopping all morning for a portable sleeping platform for my Honda CRV - and just before ordering something slick costing $1800 - I stumbled upon your video. You deserve the ENGINEER of the DECADE award!! I could have a sleeping platform by the weekend with this incredible versatile sleeping platform. CAMPING HERE I COME!! THANK YOU times 1000!!
This is more my style of doing it. Walmart has an 8 inch memory foam mattress that comes in a box. Those are BOMB. For anyone who has the clearance for it.
Great, doing same with shelving in my grand caravan and was wondering about finding a foam mattress that thick.
This is exactly what I've been looking for. Super simple especially if you don't own and know how to work heavy power tools like myself. Thank you!
Hope it works as good for you as it does for me
Just built one for my '17 Equinox. It was sooo insanely simple. Cannot wait to roll down the highway. Thank you ❤✌
We used 4 shelves that are 2’ by 3’ in the back of our Grand Caravan to make a bed that is 6’ long and 4’ wide. It fits perfectly. We left the legs longer than you did for storage underneath. It works great!
This will work perfectly in my car. My back seats won't go all the way down and it's the family vehicle so I don't want to do a permanent conversion. Thank you for sharing.
I rested the shelf on the seat and used a level to measure what distance I needed. then I flipped it upside-down and put the leg in and use the measerment to mark then cut the level. should work the same, good luck
This is the best bed platform I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing this . Cheers from Australia 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Not sure it is the best but fits my needs. Thanks for watching!
Can’t wait to try this for my summer travel adventures. I even have a plastic shelf in my garage that I am not currently using.
Love this! I have a '93 Ford Bronco XLT and am tossing around ideas for a no build, no dismantling of any vehicle part, camping bed...this would work. It's certainly much more aesthetically pleasing than plywood on plastic buckets. PLUS, it allows for air circulation and storage underneath. Thanks for the video!
it was so easy and the cost was so low it's worth trying - just make sure you get the 'heavy' plastic shelves so they hold the weight better
Where did you get the shelves?
@@emilyazadnia5876 Menards is where I got mine
Great idea! I have no resources to build anything out of wood so this is awesome. Thanks so much for posting this!
Sweet setup - nice that it can be done without removing seats and can be easily stored. I've been looking for a solution like this - thanks!
Genius!!! Thankyou I will try this.👍🇨🇦
What a trip. Dude you're so smart! Light weight, inexpensive. Outstanding! Thanks!
Well everything comes from somebody else's ideas. I saw a video where they took a PVC pipe and put it around a metal legs to level out a desk. Ironically I had just bought some extra heavy duty shelving for my garage and instead of installing it in my garage I hacksawed it off for my car.
This is amazing. Thank you so much for sharing!!!!
It's a cheap way to try it
Very.nice idea :) have to meassure my suv and start looking for similar shelfs locally. (Europe)
some people can't find the shelfs that clip together - I feel like as long as they are the stronger version they don't shift that much in my setup
Great job, great tip!
Simple, light, and roof rack strappable. Keep extra legs for a table and bench for outside when not a bed frame.
Very neat idea thanks for showing
NP - hope it at least give you some ideas
Phew! I can do this. Thank you for sharing!
You can do it!
BRILLANT.....BRILLANT
Have same car. Might try this.
Go for it! It a cheap option even if you don't like it your not out much
I should be able to apply this to my Chevy Tracker. I was struggling with the foot part of the bed not being stable. This would work like a dream. I would not use the wood however. I would use my thick tractor supple fleece blankets I have.
I hope it works out, not using the boards would make it lighter for sure 👍
Brilliant 👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks for taking the time to share with us. I believe I'll be using your system in the future depending on the overall weight. Approximately, how much does each shelf weigh? I have to be conscious of everything with my vehicles limited towing capabilities. Again, thank you for sharing your idea!!!
Looks like I missed this comment, it's light - the board is really the only weight. I don't notice when it's in the car.
Perfect man
Not sure about perfect but definitely functional 👍
Thank you for the video! I just purchased a 2016 equinox and this is a great idea for me. Do you have any other equinox camping setup videos?
Sorry, no - sadly I'm not good at YT 🙂
Looks great - are you sure those are 24"Wx12"D cuz they look more like the 36"Wx24"D which would certainly fit my Honda CR-V better?
Let me check
You are 100% right I have the size off
PJ Ju, I took have a Honda CR-V, thanks for the measurements 😊
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 this was the easiest method I've found. Can the back shut completely?
Yes
Did you also add a piece of lumber to the underneath of the first piece you slid into place? Added support perhaps? Looks like it anyway. Thanks for the great idea. I have a low, wooden platform now that works great but it's so darn heavy!
I originally put one in the front but I broke it off in the garage and it seems to work without it
Nice! However I literally had to used the Closed Captioning to know what you were saying
Sorry, I really should rerecord this
That's odd! I have plastic shelving and was thinking about that very thing before I saw your video!!!
Still working
I have a 2007 Acura MDX.. I'm thinking this platform could work in my SUV as well.. 🤷♀️
Hi. Great video. I have a 2020 Equinox. I don't know how to build or cut anything. You said something must be cut to six inches? Please elaborate on what and how. Thanks.
the poles it come with will be longer - just measure about 6 inch and use a small saw - I used a hack saw but if you're not comfortable make sure you wear gloves
Very nice. I just don't understand how the two units clip together. Are those notches there already when you buy the shelves or did you cut the notches in yourself? You have an exlanation on screen but I still don't understand the system. Can you make a follow up video? I'm sure I'm not the only one scratching his head about that. Thanks
They were built into the cabinet when I bought it
Great idea also, I don't know why everyone uses plywood because it's so heavy and must really reduce the gas mileage
right, so easy to take it in and out
This is the simple build that I’ve been searching, so I can go car camping.
What size thickness is the memory foam? It looks super thick and comfortable.
It is just cheap from Walmart, 2ish inches maybe
This is such a great idea! How did you cut the legs?
Any cheap hand saw since it's soft. I use a $5 mini hacksaw at Walmart. Just go slow till you get it started so you hold your measurements
Wow how nice thanks!! What brand are those shelves? I can’t seem to find some that lock together like that. Oops found them I think
I got mine at Menards but I've seen him at other big box stores
I was not clear on the part that described the "locking mechanism" of the plastic shelves. Can you clarify please, thanks.
I think you have the wrong size listed for the shelving. Did you use 36x24?
yes
Amazing. Did you use the plywood finally? It seems not but you showed it.
I did, in the end I cut it into 2 so it would be easier to transfer from the car to the garage
👍
A foam mattress works on this without the plywood.
Thanks for the tip
Very smart idea...but I don’t understand where you put the plywood? Is it built into the cushion pieces?
Great question, it just goes on top of the shelves to spread the weight out and span the gap behind the driver. I did build it into my cushion after a few uses to make it easy on myself but to start I just had it as one piece on top.
@@ParksWithPoints that’s what I thought...good idea👍Thanks for posting.
@@ParksWithPoints love this
@@ParksWithPoints is it safe to just use the black shelving without the plywood? I would put a mattress over it of course but I was thinking of not using the plywood.
@@kariturks8191 well, for me I was a bit to heavy 180lbs for the shelving but I was testing it without the mattress and my son (age 8) together so even more weight. Sense the mattress spreads out the weight I can see it working if they are heavy duty shelves. It would cut down on the weight and give great ventilation to the mattress. Honestly, I really like that idea and it's low risk in my opinion. Don't forget, at least with my year, you can slide the whole back forward a few inches towards the front. I don't because I'm moving it in and out of the car a lot but the forward position would have even less weight unsupported. Sorry, long msgs but hopefully that gives you a few thoughts from what I have learned you can use and post how it goes.
im confused about the shelf width measurement is 12" and the length of both layer down is 5ft I am thinking I won't fit.
I am going to be residing in 2019 chevy equinox iin about 6 days. Lease up and cannot stay. housing market & other issues put me in this spot. I love your idea with the platform, but I need a larger platform than single bed. I want to utilize all the room for a bed for comfort... also, I don't need the second row of seats. they can both be down; however, I don't want anything to hinder drivers seat from being able to put the driver seat back as far as it will go and also for the driver seat to be able to recline all the way back so I have the choice of either one depending on my situation. ultimately I want to be able to sleep in the back every night. one concern I have is since the 2019 is not all that big back there, I want to be able to sleep on something but not have it too high because I don't want to be raised up close to the ceiling because it's going to be hard to climb back there anyway every night. the car is really not built for all that but wanted to get your take on that. also, I'm curious as to why people feel they need platforms? is there a reason? and what if someone just put a nice soft foam mattress and a mattress pad in the back, wouldn't that work without building the platform or you feel the platform is necessary? I'm just learning so anything you could tell me would be great
The platform makes it much more comfortable given with the seats folded down there's a 7 to 8 in drop till you get to the back. Would be easy to try though push the seat all the way forward and fold it down. I personally needed the extra space and like it closer to level
I have a 2011 Equinox and have removed my back seats because of the 9-inch difference there was from folding the seats. I need the space so I don’t feel like I’m in a coffin. So far it’s working really well.
@@brendanoren5047 you would have a lot more room if you removed the seat
Heidi
How has car camping worked out for you? I'm thinking of doing it as well. I have a 2020 Equinox.
So, this will only work for a one person sleeping arrangement? Will another shelf work in the spot where the car seat is up?
Correct, as designed it's best for one
Thought about it, you could do a bigger version if you put both seats down but because I have a little one I needed that back seat up when the car was moving. My kid and I can squeeze in but definitely two adults would be uncomfortable in my opinion
Hi sir, what kind of of clips you used to clip them together. Please give me part name, thanks
can you please tell the manufacture and place of purchase of the shelving unit can seem to locate the ones that snap together
I got this one at Menard's it's a big chain - I used the MaxIt brand - Heavy duty Knect-A-Shelf and it came with the connectors that link the two 'shelfs' together. I'm sure there are quite a few different brands that would work as long as it's heavy duty
@@johnodavidson ok thanks so much
@@johnodavidson what size exactly. What's in the YOUR picture shows seems narrow. Did you snap the 2 together to get your width?
@@nonya68 I snapped 2 (3ft wide - 2ft deep) together in an L that fit with the 40/60 split back
width is 3 feet - 2 feet deep
Totally EZ as pie...works for me all day. Check out Tim y'all. Coolest guy in van life. So creative with budget ideas. Awesome!! MobangFoYoBucks channel. 🥰
Thanks! Will do!
Would someone tell me what advantages a platform has over just putting the "mattress" on the floor?
Level sleeping in something similar to a bed
Also, if you are doing a minivan/cargo can build, it allows your some under bed storage.
STORAGE UNDERNEATH!
Do you have a link for the shelving?
What hardware store did you go to? I’ve gone to Ace and Home Depot. I can’t find any like this.
I picked this one up at Menard's - it's a chain like Lowes
why not just use a mattress without the shelving? Whats the point of the shelving?
The shelves make it level and cover the seats when they're folded down. I personally don't fit with my stuff unless I have it in the car.
For example, my 2007 Honda CR-V does not allow my rear seats to fold down level, which means trying to sleep with half my body awkwardly elevated on a slant (I tried either head or legs on the upward slant). This method would level out the unevenness to make a flat surface. Just what I'm looking for! (I am female 4'11").
It says it only supports 55 pounds per shelf. How did you make it work?
I would check, I thought they were 200lbs - maybe I included the wrong picture 😂
@@ParksWithPoints So do we have an answer to this VERY important piece of information? Is it 200 pounds? 55 pounds? Or?? Thanks
Where did you the crates
Menards
How is he going too close the trunk?
The lift gate is taller - I'm not sure of the clearance but I'm guessing 2 inches higher maybe, too bad you can't include a picture in a reply :-)
Where do you find those racks?
i got them at Menards
@@ParksWithPoints
menards??
@@aquiconfeya Yes, in the US Menards.com is a home improvement store. There are lots of home improvement stores and concept should work with lots of different brands of plastic shelfs, just double-check the weight as you want them to be heavy duty
I have looked at somsny. See none with notched. Brand name please. Thank you
did you find them?
@@ParksWithPoints went to Menards and found some thanks
I only found notches. So I will have to cut back piece to make level
How to control temp??
Right now, an electric blanket in a cigarette lighter
300 pounds is crazy huh?
I would not trust 300, marketing never equals reality
You listed the wrong dimensions. 24 x 12 isn't what you need. You need the set that is 72 inches in height 36 in width and 24 in depth. 24 inches is what i noticed why it was wrong. My shoulders would hang off a 12 inch platform homie.
thanks, I'll double-check and see if I can slide a call out or something
also the 2 shelves together the way he did it is only 5ft. im 5"6' so its to short
You need better louder sound
I appreciate the feedback. I almost didn't post it but figured progress over perfection 😂
