hi mr ki flex sir 😀. been watching a few of your vids and enjoying your channel so thought i would say hi. love what you have done with your TT. your 2m blue vid convince me to buy one. should have watched this video first lol. im switching from an 0M5e so im sure i'll be happy. cheers, Martyn
What affordable cart do you recommend for this? I have a Grado blue on my PL-512 right now but im not feeling it, the treble is so rolled off that it sounds like cassette tape. It's night and day worse compared to my Debut Carbon/OM2 Red setup, I want it to sound more like that. :(
Yeah, superb overhaul. You have the skills, man. Also i agree on your opinion that the whole family of that particular generation of pioneer vinyl spinners is very solid build and good quality. Compared to the PL30K pioneer is actually peddling a PL-512 is clearly preferable.
That is very cool. My 2 turntables are direct drive; my memories of belt drive from when I was a kid was the belt failing. I've never fiddled with customizing a turntable but this looks interesting. I'm going to keep my eyes open for an inexpensive 512 now. Let me ask, how did you apply the paint to the plinth? Was it spray paint, brush, roller or something else? Well done! It looks beautiful. Cheers, Tom
+Michael Muresan' man-o-man' sweet you will love that table ,its very good for whats it brings to the HIFi world ,on a budget ..enjoy man what cart are you using?
Just picked it up after work. Left it as is for now. Until i get a chance to look around and read some reviews and what not. This is the player my brother has and he raves about it. It came with a Sensui SC-32 cartridge, which from what i read is basically factory replacement. Im learning as I go. Still new at it.
Awesome job my friend! Quick question. Ive picked up a PL512 but mine does not have antiskate controls. I just read online that there was two versions and one is like mine. Do you think this is a huge issue? I'm new to LP playback :)
Hey Ki Flex, awesome video and beautiful job. I have a PL-514, and i'm looking for a new stylus. How do the ortofon s pros compared to the stylus 7 or 10? i know that they are djing stylus but would they play well on my records? thanks!
+MazQcat hey Maz thanks for passing by am.. i will recommend the OM 5 or 10 for this turntable ,yes the pro is a dj stylus and it works fine .but it can be a bit bass heavy, i will say that you should get the OM 10 .CHEERS !! stephen
mr.ki-flex you´ve done a great work in restoring the turntable, but just one thing ,in the eighties this kind of turntable that was developed in late 60´s and the system was used in every drive belt turntable till 1980,the last year they were sold,in the 80´s they used the same engine and box built by chuodenki(c.e.c)for several brands like toshiba, sanyo, and several others in pioneers turntables in the first years they still used the s arm you have there but at the same time they use kind of tone arm with audio-technica needle but pioneer´s had good needles and cartridge but they stop produce in it ,i bought 5 before they disapeer. but i still have from 73 a basic turntable that is the same you have there the box were in wood and larger with pioneer symbol in the midle, but at the time there were already direct drive turntables very expensive, you say that at the time they weren´t expensive but with the same money ,you could buy a good car or even a house, and the price you say that it cost inthe end of seventies was more like the price in 1973 because mine was bought new in japan, and at the time i lived in angola-africa till 1975 and because of the begining of the civil war i could only fill two big boxes and nothing else,so i had a sedan from bmw 2.000cc(100horsepower) four door and a japanese friend of mine knowing that i had to leave the car there,i was thiking of offering it to my japanese friend, but he gave me a stereo receiver and matching speakers from pioneer, that he told me that was the value of the car. i still have this system working today all original but in 1980 i had more money and bought the high-end turntable ,stereo receiver and speakers from pioneer being the turntable the pl-560 with quartz lock and a kind off vu meter for the tracking that i´ve never seen in other brand the box was just like that but all made of iron with grey paint ,very beautifull and doesn´t had the brand in the box like the one you have ,but i´ve seen a ealier model that had the old logo in the same place you´ve putted the new, but it was like a rectangular piece of aluminium with the brand carved on it,well mine still works perfect and it as very much use and this during almost 45 years so you have there a turntable for the next 50 years, it gave you work but it looks great and the new ortofon complete head will upgrade the sound quality to very higher level.keep safe and listen to good sound
Hello! I have the same 512 but a bad sound when I turn it up. I have a M44MC and N44 7 Needle. I have the speakers next to the turntable, I just read that this is no good, but what do you think? I move it like 1 meter away and still not good. thanks!
What did you use to strip off the existing finish?? And thanks for replying. Table looks great, I have a 514 I want to do like this in a dark red color.
Did you refinish the turntable base yourself, or did someone else? It looks fantastic!! Is that painted with Melamine?? The pioneer emblem is not original for Pioneer turntables, where is that off from??
+Chris Dillon hey Chris thanks for passing by and your kind words man.. am yes the 512 and the X has anti-skate , the X is identical mechanically too the 512 it's just the color is different x stand's for the Black option .cheers stephen.
SouthernPioneer1965 hey S pioneer. .thanks for passing by. Am I loved the 518. .miss it a lot. .hope you find a good one. I may pick one up soon. Video coming soon. Cheers
Okay, if you're still around after 8 years, did you paint right over the vinyl covered base or tear all the vinyl off? Came out nice. I have also seen these with wood bases, both solid and veneered look lovely also. Interesting note: I was curious about this series of tables, the PL-512, 14, 16, & 18, and owned three of them. First, the 512 is the best sounding of the bunch. The 514 is similar and a little heavier plus has return. Those two use synchronous motors, far superior to the cheaper DC motor in the later 516. And well, the Direct Drive(518) of the era couldn't hold speed as well as a synchronous motor. DC motors on the other hand need some sort of servo to keep it at the correct speed so it's always speeding up and slowing down. The ones who claim that they can't hear it simply have poor listening skills. Play a piano performance with sustained notes on these older tables with DC motors and hear them wow!
ki flex, I picked up an pl-514 and I'm in the process of refinishing it. What would you recommend to refinish the cover because the one in your video looks really nice.
I love what you've done with the 512, i just picked one up for approx 20 dollars, but i see mine is slightly different, it has no anti skating control, i think its the 512, not the 512X, oh and thanks very much for the cartridge recommendation, it's actually , within my budget, cheers
davidst489 i don't have any preference on brand paint, just get a good one. am i went looking for the legs for you but could not find the seller, i have some extra that i bought .am i will try to find the seller ..but if not send me your pm
